16th Century? I'm pretty sure that guy posts on slashdot regularly. "oi got frist psot"
Yeah but who is going to visit a site that is all advertisements?
You're paying thousands of dollars for space on a site that will never be visited by ANYONE besides those reading press releases about the millionare you just helped create.
Good job companies! I have some swamp land you can put billboards on!
As for adblocking, Google toolbar gives me the same thing
No it does not. Google Toolbar blocks popup advertisements. That is something that is BUILT INTO Firefox. Adblock is a seperate plugin, and removes IN LINE advertisements on websites.
Annoying flash advertisements all over the page? Gone with Firefox and Adblock. Google Toolbar? It might block the one popup advertisement that it tries to show you, but it wont prevent the dozen flash ads or the one that scrolls and hovers over the text until you click the tiiiny (x close) button.
Also, please dont complain that Firefox isn't useable when you type in C:\, it isn't meant to be a file browser, it isn't meant to be part of the computer interface. It is a browser, not a swiss army knife that breaks on using half the tools it has like IE.
I have been running this since last night and I must say, it is a nice release.
Two things I have noticed that impress me the most:
1) They finally fixed tab chatted, so if someone on your MSN list decides they want a 20 character display name, their tab wont take up 20 spaces on your chat window. Instead it truncates it and evenly spaces the tabs.
2) When you type/recieve a message you see it scroll in from the bottom of the message window. Really neat effect when you are typing, as it looks like it zooms from the text input field into the conversation window. Nothing major, but neat.
All in all, its a pretty good release.

Kazaa Owners Risk Jail

Yes, Kazaa connects to a central servers, which the spyware profiteers (Kazaa owners) run.
They implemented the Australia IP block on the server, and could easily do the same with the searches. Other programs, such as DirectConnect and Bittorrent wouldn't be so easily controlled by their creator, because they run on networks that were not set up by the creator of the program.
Paramount has looked at all four computers in Lee's home, alleging he had one of them cleaned to erase evidence. The company has filed a federal lawsuit against the Blue Ash man.
Movie companies have the right to look at all the computers in your house, because you allegedly commited *copyright infringement*.
Yeah because really there is no browser that could possibly support all the different linux distributions, Win32 binaries, Mac OSX.app files, hell even FreeBSD builds.
Comcast only locks down port25 when people are running mail servers on their computers. Why? Because most people running mail servers are windows zombies.
I can understand it if automatically blocked your home mail server for sending out regular mail, but you have to understand that 90% of the users are dumb.
"Consumer notebook buyers don't want less than 15-inches, " he said. "Even if Apple came in at lower prices on a 12.1-inch display, that might not be enough to sway many buyers. But realistically, I don't see Apple going that low in price for that big a display."
"Consumer notebook buyers dont want less than 15-inches" someone dumb said, "Even if Apple made a machine that was actually portable, customers are dumb and want something that they cant take to class."
I mean seriously, why not 12"? Have any of you actually used a 12" Laptop? I one everyday (Averatec 3200) and I am going to be buying a 12" iBook or Powerbook when they come out with Intels, because it works so well. A little heavy though.;)
Well... maybe you're the exception then, because there is plenty of evidence that marketing works. People are susceptible to the advertisements that they see, and people do respond to them.
Marketing hasn't been proven to work, please, give me one example where sales increased as a result of advertising, and not advertising budgets being increased due to increased sales. Think about it, when did they start hyping Firefox? The New York Times advertisement only happened after the browser was being downloaded left and right by people via word of mouth.
Same with all products, they become popular, so the company that makes it has a lot of money to advertise the product. When sales start to stumble, the advertising budget is the first to go when cutting costs.
Really, theres just no proof that advertising works, but word of mouth definitely does. What do you do then? Make a better product, just like how Internet Explorer beat Netscape in the first browser war, it wasn't because they had a massive advertising campaign, it was because they made a better browser. Unseating IE is a little harder because it is included in every windows computer out there, but it is possible. Just spend the money on browser improvements, not silly advertisements that just blend in with the thousands of other advertisements people see every day of their lives.
Don't be surprised when it eventually evolves into what amounts to the Microsoft version of the Mac.
No. Microsoft refused to let people connect keyboards and mice to the original Xbox. Why? Because they don't want to make this become a PC.
This is more trying to be Microsoft's version of the TiVo. Even that comparison isn't really apt, its just a console that wants to be everything to everyone.
I'll build a better opinion of the 360 as better titles start to trickle in. For now I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who isn't simply going to use it to play older games, or in the unlikely event that you actually feel you MUST have one of the launch titles.
If you want a console to play older games, get the original Xbox. It'll be cheaper and you'll know it will run every Xbox game, not 33% of them like the Xbox360.
Personally, I'm holding off on any new console purchase until I have a good reason to shell out the cash.
Here. I agree that it's annoying that they haven't fixed it in the browser yet, but at least they offer an extension system so users can fix annoynces themselves. I also like Opera, but if they had a bug like this, would there be any workarounds available for you?
If pure libertarianism really works, why isn't there countries like this?
Because it doesn't work in reality. A pure libertarian system in reality would be just as flawed as a pure communist system, even though both in theory sound great.
They should apply this technology to slashdot stories, it will check the simularity to previous stories, if its a dupe it will be posted and be a hit for sure!
Why all the fuss about Release Candidate #2... with some minor bug fixes, when Opera released a technical preview of their next generation browser, Opera 9.0/Merlin?
Sometimes I wonder if Mozilla has been putting some of their advertising dollars at work here...
How long until these thinkpads are labeled Lenovo? As far as I'm concerned, there is no IBM Thinkpad any more....doesn't make Lenovo any better/worse; I'd just rather call a spade a spade.
from the title of the article: "Lenovo ThinkPad X41 Tablet PC: Closing the Mobile Gap"
Slashdot just got it wrong, this is definitely a Lenovo.
They didn't say, but it is enough that they were able to take advertisements out of the main Opera browser.
The Mozilla foundation makes $30 million from having the default search bar in Firefox as Google. I bet Opera has a similar deal.
And Yahoo is the default in Asian markets for Firefox. Hooray for bidding wars!
That is because the 16th century was 1501-1600, of course he wasnt born in the 1600s, retard!!!
It's okay Tezkah, I only hurt you because I love me.

You're forgetting that Australia is a nation that was founded by criminals. They are truly a nation where everyone was once a criminal.
Brings a tear to my eye. Makes me want to sing!
Oh say can you see, by the boot's glistening blue light, what so proudly we booted, the establishment of Fair Use

Wow.
Yeah because really there is no browser that could possibly support all the different linux distributions, Win32 binaries, Mac OSX .app files, hell even FreeBSD builds.
No it would be impossible.
How come a closed source browser has better distro support (as in official builds for each distro) when an open source one cant?
GET SOME PRIORITIES!

There is an extension to fix that behavior:
Here. I agree that it's annoying that they haven't fixed it in the browser yet, but at least they offer an extension system so users can fix annoynces themselves. I also like Opera, but if they had a bug like this, would there be any workarounds available for you?
Anyone else see the irony in the "OpenCable" process being used to DRM TV content?
Let's all disregard trying to do anything because it doesn't work because someone else hasn't done it yet.
We have tried it. It didn't work. Why do you think there are labour laws in the UK? Why are children going to school everyday instead of the factory?
Oh, because the government butted its terrible nose into capitalism to fix some of the market's failures.
If pure libertarianism really works, why isn't there countries like this?

They designed a short skirt for some of the female staff in STNG. They even suggested that in the future, males could wear them too.
Interesting, is that where Futurama gets Zap Brannigan's short short skirt from?
