Youtube is switching to mpeg4 but they are still using the flash vp6 video format which is an improved vp3, just like theora. Also the new encoder in trunk fixes most of the problems you mention.
The only problem is that there is no wifi and probably won't be for a long time. The openmoko crew refuse to implement it cause there's no chip that comes with open driver as of today and there isn't any on the horizon.
One of the greatest advantage of having an open phone is so that you can install a SIP phone on it and use it when there's a wifi connection available which is almost everywhere these days (at work, at home, lots of public places...). When there's an open phone that comes out with wifi integrated I'll be the first to get it though.
You're reading Slashdot: News for nerds, stuff that matters
OpenMoko is an open phone, which means you can tweak it anyway you want, program and install anything you want, pretty nerdy don't you think?
hey I really think you should read the fucking article. It says that they sent tone of letters and that none of them was even answered. What else is there to do?
For those that don't know about KDE, it was started by a German guy and most KDE users and devs live in Germany (though it's now popular in other countries too), also Suse was German and used KDE as its main desktop. So lots of people are pushing KDE there just like they did at Munich and now in Lower Saxony.
I will be surprised when some country in Asia or America that is not known for its KDE community decides to switch to KDE.
That being said, it's of course great that did it in Germany.
before you start picking at the K naming thing, remember that Apple does the same with the "i", think iPod, iCal, iBook and Microsoft with well "Microsoft" word, excel etc and of course Gnome with the "G". So KDE is not alone here plus if you think about it, K is kinda Kool:P
it does:

Sell a man a fish, and he can eat for a day, teach a man to fish, and you lose a great business opportunity?
actually that's a quote from Karl Marx who brilliantly and in a funny way (as usual) explained why capitalists don't care about people ignorance and why it's not in their interest to help out on the fight against ignorance.
So long as the US remains the lone force holding theline against the Darkness and defending Truth, Justiceand Western Civilization there isn't a problem leavingICANN in charge of DNS
ICANN had all but approved the.XXX domain butbecause a few Christian groups complained to the Commerce Department it forced the ICANN to drop the domain. That's neither open, democratic, nor afree market.
I think the parent was kidding about the "defending Truth, Justice and Western Civilization" part. Don't take it too seriously!
Homer: Good even to you, Mohammed.
Moe: And to you, Hamir.
Homer: Do you not find it odd that I so often frequent your soda bar?
Moe: I do.
Homer: It would make sense if it were a bar where liquor were served, and I were not forbidden by Allah to consume such. But a soda bar?
Moe: Yes. This troubles me as well.
Homer: Hmm.
Moe: So, you want to get your Jihad on?
Homer: Indeed.
I see the irony in your post. Sure we don't need to build the same cars and all but what works in the real world (incompatible cars and the rest) can be a mess in the internet world. The current situation in IM is a real mess. The fact that you need a different software for every network is absurd!
Imagine if you needed a special email client to send a mail to a hotmail user and another email client to send a mail to a yahoo client. Imagine you needed a different internet browser to visit google, yahoo, msn or whatever.
What's the connection between IM, email client and webpages?
They all use protocol, and in the case of email and webpages they are open protocols (smtp,pop3,imap,http etc).
If microsoft got in the internet bandwagon first, we would probably be in the same situation for sending mails and viewing web pages, ie the need for a different app for each web pages and emails.
This what's great about the net, you're not bound to any software to use it, it's all about interoperabillity.
It looks like MS never understood what the net was all about, or rather they did understand but never wished for it!
from TFA:
"Written by special contributor Stéphane Rieppi on 2005-01-15 04:36:21 UTC"
then:
" Its new beta (version 7) makes things even worse"
I'm not an MSN user but I'm pretty damn sure that version7 is the stable one, right?
"While interesting, that browser only presents another page in a frame, it doesn't actually render it itself. Now, if someone creates a html rendering engine in Ajax, then I'm impressed."
I know that's only a frame but it acts like a browser. And you did ask for web based browser right? not for a web based html engine. Firefox is a browser, not an engine, Geiko is. So my answer was appropriate:p
here it's 15 something seconds from tapping enter on grub's menu to the login prompt and I log in with KDE4's kdm on an old aspire.
Youtube is switching to mpeg4 but they are still using the flash vp6 video format which is an improved vp3, just like theora. Also the new encoder in trunk fixes most of the problems you mention.
I think the Incas didn't built any pyramids. There are some in Peru such as this one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caral and they indeed are prior art as they were build 5000 years ago but it wasn't built by the Incas, even if the Incas would have built some they weren't around 3000 years ago so no prior art. Anyway, you're probably talking of these ones from mexico: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pyramid_of_Cholula and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chichen_Itza
:)
Those are not prior art though except if you think of the fact that mayans couldn't have been aware of the Egyptian ones

the funny thing is that Quanta+ in KDE has had a similar UI with a ribbon for years now:g n g

Slashdot new design doesn't work with konqueror and I heard with Safari either. What a shame for a news for nerd site. I hope they'll fix this.

you didn't read the parent, the parent says that you pay a license to stream using MPEG4 and co or get a free license to stream in Ogg/theora.
t
Note that if you opt for Ogg/theora, there exist plugin for WindowsMedia player here
http://www.illiminable.com/ogg/
Mplayer and vlc played them too.
If you don't want your user to download any player, they can use that java applet:
