They have no choice, really, when it comes to pricing. The whole business plan of those companies (the Big Box stores) is to maximise store traffic. They need thousands of people wandering around the place buying tonnes of mechandise. If they increase prices and drive out the bargain hunters, they are....ahem...fucked.

The next time I go into Best Buys (or Future Shop in Canada; they are the same company) I am going to try an act like a Barry or a Buzz and see what kind of interest I get.

It seems that the publishing of this info is going to hurt Best Buy the most. If they were to target their *devil* customers and kept it on the lo-down, maybe nobody would have noticed. Having it on /. has got to be a bad deal for them.

Thanks for the idea about getting a rebate (although I still hate them) and then returning the product. That's a great plan. I'll be sure to try it out this weekend.

  6. Is nuclear the answer? on Could Nuclear Power Wean the U.S. From Oil? · · Score: 1

This is an interesting question, and I hope a lively discussion. I think one thing is perfectly clear and that is that oil is a finite resource and something must be done in order to shift reliance from oil. I don't think nuclear is the step. It just costs too much money. I understand that energy is 'clean' and efficient once the reactor is running, but the costs at startup are astronomical and maintainance is lethal. The government in Ontario recently felt that when trying to modernize their Nuclear power plant in Pickering. The cost for overhaul for $4B. This is not chump change. I think, perhaps, the solution to the energy crisis that s coming (and it IS coming) may not be invented yet. In fact, I suspect that the West (its not only America that loves oil) will have to invent their way out of the problem. Although I think that the clout wielded by the oil barons will stall this development for years to come.

But seriously. AOL is big and bulky and people are starting to become aware that the need for it is not really all that great. I suppose much of it comes from the fact that the internet has been readily available to the public for long enough that there is a comfort level. AOL was really made to help people that were tech-ignorant access the inet content. This is less and less the case. Even the tech-ignorant now have kids who have grown up and spent their whole life (practically) with internet access and have become,in many cases, quite savvy.

Its not that Americans are dumb, idiotic or stupid. However, there seems to be a real belief that their personal belifs need to be codified in law at the expense of any dissenters. This is essentially the aim of the Moral Majority. It seems that most Americans do not realise that living your life according to a moral code does not require everyone else to live by it. America is supposed to be the land of the free, but it is taking some mis-steps. Its as though many folks are frightened that their way of life will be lost if it is not preserved in law. What nees to be preserved in law is their right to live anyway they wish (provided it does not harm others).

Just because the American president wants to "internationalise" an effort, does not make ita sure thing. Having said that, the argument you make is a little misleading in other ways. The creationism part of the bible is in the Old Testament which is the "Jewish" part of the bible and was written before the ministry of Jesus.
