I've worked for AOL tech support for a year (with only one day left...) and have to say a few things. First, AOL does not care about the customers. They care about making money and selling more products to members. If you call and demand a supervisor, you will most likely not get one to come on the line. They have far more important things to do than to listen to a disgruntled customer. Often, if you are transferred to someone else when you ask for a supervisor, it will be the cancellations department. They receive a hefty commission for every account that they "save." Additionally, the supervisors tend to be a bunch of blubbering idiots and rarely are able to rectify anything.

Trying to get personal information from the representative on the phone is a bad idea as well. It means nothing. We are under no obligation to provide anything beyond the first name and department in which we work. The majority of people who are unhappy with the treatment received from customer service are just dissatisfied with not getting what they want. So long as the rep is working within their boundries by not hanging up and whatnot, they will not be punished for just making someone angry. Threatening their job does not matter, because nothing will ever come of it. Any help that you get from this new monkey is exactly what the original monkey was going to do anyway, although of course they'll do their best to make it sound like you're getting the red carpet.

Bottom line: If Monkey 1 isn't cooperating, make an excuse to leave, call back, and hope that Monkey 2 is more inclined to help you. I did see Generations in the theatre, then waited for First Contact to hit HBO, and done. Haven't see any of the ST movies since then. Unless I hear some rave reviews from all sides, I'm done with new Star Trek--movies and TV.

I really have no urge to see any Sith trailers. Quite the opposite, I'm avoiding them. I admit, I still hold some nostalgia for the Star Wars universe, and even if I won't go to a theatre for it, I will see the next movie when it's out on cable.

You, my friend, are a person of wisdom. This is the number one problem with star wars: To borrow a phrase from Jurassic Park, they were so concerned with whether they *could*, they didn't stop to think if they *should*.

All of this CGI and whatnot has killed the sci-fi industry. Everyone gets a look at these movies, and goes "woah" as they see the special effects, but no one actually thinks about the quality of the movie its self. So, what we have is a situation in which every single solitary moment of a star wars film is visually beautiful, and utterly devoid of life.

You have cardboard cutouts for your human actors, and CGI characters everywhere. Every background is a living microcosm, but after a while, it just looks cluttered, it looks like people wander into the background just to make more motion. You end up with people talking "in the vague direction" of the CGI character, and other missed visual cues. It's horrible. It doesn't make a movie better.

You end out with the Jedi Master of the known universe flipping his shit and flying around a room in a show of physical prowess and cgi flash, but in Empire, yoda denies the need for raw, brutish strength, in favor of mind-over-matter. Yoda, in my mind, should be a character who is powerful by virtue of his presence, not his actions. But, no. CGI could bring him to life. Whether it should have or not, no one stopped to consider.

Add to the top of that the utter marketability of the movies, and it becomes sickening. The pod race scene in TPM? Exists in order to make video games. Jar Jar? Exists because the other actors have no hope of accomplishing situation comedy, as well as to put on lunch boxes.

Star wars has been killed, and Lucas pulled the trigger.

If you want an example of Sci-Fi done right, look at farscape. Brilliant actors. Excellent script writing. Voice-acted puppets where they are needed. Given a bigger budget, rigel and pilot could have been CGI, but why? They are more convincing as puppets. CGI is used for Moya and other space effects, where it's most effective.

I think all of the examples I gave were turned into games at some point or another.

The pod-race was a little bit lacking in execution... or maybe it was all the crud around the pod-race which detracted from it, but it was one of the few things IMHO, which had some of the spirit of the original films.

I think the best theory I saw here was that, for one thing, this is a somewhat younger Yoda. Possibly something occured between AoTC and ESB that turn him against thinking that fighting is always an answer - quite possibly the events concerning Anakin's turning to Vader. Ep2 Yoda isn't the same as Ep5 Yoda. He's younger. He's one of many many Jedi. Realisation about the Sith threat is still relatively new. In ESB he was tired, in hiding and quite possibly a bit jaded. Something had obviously changed him, and with the very large turnaround in the "World Order" it's a rather believable change.

I've seen that kind of scene before. Subtle tests of power, or even just two opponents facing off, unmoving, playing out possibilities before finally committing to an attack. It does work well, but it was in a TV series where it doesn't take up so much of the overall time in comparison.
Unfortunately in a film it wouldn't necessarily be quite so effective. Especially in a cinema, as these kinds of encounters rarely happen near the beginning of the film. So you'd get two characters standing still, nothing major visibly happening, and the effects of a cinema-size bucket of cola making it's effects known...

Unfortunately, flashy fights do grab your attention. They're also more likely to get more bums on seats, more word of mouth, even more heated discussion if it comes down to it.

It's all-but-inevitable that he will use one though. And for the same reasons I think. Although from a pure-story point of view the strongest show of power is never having to actually use it, from a Movie point of view that simply doesn't always work. People want to see people use their powers.

Besides, even if he does then just think about it. In a total of six films (well, five he's visibly in) Palpatine will have only drawn a lightsaber once. Yet still had been basically the Big Bad of the entire saga.

I've tried totem, xine, and mplayer on Mandrake 10.0. I haven't tried compiling my own copy of mplayer, but I have the codecs, and the output from mplayer makes me think that mplayer is using the quicktime codec. But I still just get a blue screen and no sound when I try to play it.

    Thanks...

    Why?

Because it's just fucking entertainment. It's not the bible. Lighten up.

I am going in, fully expecting an epic battle of good versus evil with lots of special effects and lots of bad acting. I know what's coming, so I'm going to enjoy it for what it is.

  148. A return to what made Star Wars Great? by Anonymous Coward · · Score: 0

I just saw the trailer, and something happened I never expected. It gave me hope for Episode III!

To me what always made the original Star Wars movies great was the fact that the overt action was always accompanied by personal interest. For every scene of Vader v. Luke, the characters were engaged with each other not only on the level of "I need to kill you or I will die" (ie the fights with Dookoo[by the way, who's afraid of someone whose name is one letter away from a euphamism for feces?) and Darth Maul), but further on the level of "You are torturing my friends and killed my mentor, I have an intense personal distaste for you" or "You're my father, I have to bring you back, I won't fight you. NOO!! You can't mess with my sister." It's that interest that made me care. I didn't care that there were thousands of mindless clone troopers attacking thousands of mindless bugs/robots, nor did I care about hundreds of gungans facing off against millions of robots.

From the preview, it looks to me like the new movie just might be a return to what I like about Star Wars. The conflict between mentor and student looks like we're headed in the right direction. I certainly hope what allows Obi Wan to escape and hurl Vader/Anakin into the lava is a flicker of hesitation on Anakin's part when he is about to destroy him. If Lucas has a good plot, we're going to get a good movie. You can say what you like about special effects and blue screens ruining actors performances, but, if there's a plot there to support it, a movie can handle bad acting. The original Star Wars films proved that, as did (to a certain extent) the recent Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow. So here's hoping that we watch an intense personal conflict and not little white clone troopers fighting little brown resistance fighters fighting little metallic robots and a couple of main characters who we don't meet long enough to care about, or are angsty for no apparent reason.

  149. Yeah, amazingly by bill_mcgonigle · · Score: 1

I was surprised to have a similar reaction myself. I loved IV, V, 2/3 of VI, 1/8th of I, 1/6th of II, and this looks like it might get over 50%.

Starting the trailer with Alec Guinness is very interesting. On one hand we're reminded how a guy sitting on a bench can be a hundred times better than the multi-million dollar CGI characters that followed (and just how atrocious they were). On the other hand, maybe, just maybe (eternal optimist) it's Lucas code for "I'm sorry, I realize what I did wrong. I'm going back to basics".

If Lucas has a good plot, we're going to get a good movie.

    Aye, there's the rub.

OK, I feel unclean for admitting this, but I saw something in the trailer and I was wondering if anyone else saw it. Specifically, there's a quick cut just before we get to see the Emperor's delightful dental work of a hangar door slamming shut (right after the last shot of Anakin and Kenobi slugging it out). If you freeze it just before it starts closing, you see a ship in space just outside the hangar. It might be one of the big ones you see fighting broadside earlier in the trailer, but it actually looks like the Millenium Falcon to me. The more I look at it, the more I think it is.

Tough to tell, with only a partial portion of a songle frame, but I have to wonder. Has anyone else seen this?
