takes aim at what one of the hackers calls the "Mac userbase aura of smugness on security
This exploit is OS independent. How is this in any way indicative of Mac user smugness? Are they so smug that they made Windows and Linux boxes explotable too?
The beancounters where I am would be oblivious. I tell them I need $x for whatever project, the CIO vets my proposal, the CFO (well, his staff) finds the budget and off we go.
They would have no idea if the OS cost money or not in my case. I expect there are other places much the same.
I have not seen Blu-ray or HD DVD in action yet either. My guess is that unless you have a HD TV the difference between them and current DVDs will not warrant the expense of upgrading.
Can anyone give actual perceived results of HD DVD or Blu-ray on an 'old' TV?
I think a big announcement is unlikely, but I think the upgrade of the iMac is a lock. They will put Conroes in the iMacs. I expect this will happen with much fuss, just a small note on their webpage and some signage in the Apple Stores. The big deal at WWDC is the new MacPro (with a Xeon (I figure) and OS X 10.5
Probaly all together. The Xeon and the Core 2 Duos (Conroe and Merom) are all being unveiled at the same time. Speculation is rife that the new MacPros will have the new Xeon (which is really a Core architechture processor too). Apple will make a big hooplah about the Mac Pro at WWDC, but I expect the upgrade to Core 2 to the existing line will just happen in due course without much fanfare.
The Macbook and Mini will keep Yonahs, Macbook Pro will get Meroms, the iMac will have a Conroe and the MacPro will have a Xeon. That's my guess, for what its worth.
I've been mulling this issue for a few weeks. I have an old Toshiba laptop that runs Win98. I've considered switching it over to Linux, but I'm unsure of which distro is appropriate.
Of course, I've looked at the big name distros, like SuSE and Ubuntu. But, I'm not convinced they'd run well on old hardware. The laptop is a P2 with 64M RAM.
So, I ask you Linux gurus, which distro would be the most suitable?
I wish we could all live there, although, I am convinced that we never will. The availability of cheap (and clean/sustainable) energy is a problem that has no clear solution. It may never be solved. Fossil Fuels were cheap, but not sustainable and dirtied up the place. These must be phased out. What alternatives are there? Hydrogen. Unlikely, a simple sourse of H2 is unknown, and creating it uses a shitload of energy. Fusion, maybe, but that is a tall order, I've read opinion that it is inherently impossible. Some unknown solution, potentially, but we need to find it soon.
I think you are correct. Our modern world (read Wetern Culture) is simply unsustainable. We cna not grow in perpetuity. The focus must be on sustainable development in each area of society. Technology will help the transition but there must also be change in philosophy.
Does ABC really think that if only they could get us to watch more SPAM, they'd somehow make more money?
No. The concern is that advertisers will sour on the effectiveness of TV ads if most people are simply self-filtering the commercials. The whole business model for ABC is selling ad during the content they produce. If nobody watches the ads, why should the advertisers bother to pay?
Agreed. You've heard the phase "knows enough to be dangerous". This guy heard about John the Ripper (or whatever he used. I can't RTFA, its been slashdotted) somewhere and decided that it would be easy to use.
What on earth was going through his head?
A local radio station plays a clip (it may be fake, but its convicing) of a guy calling into a help line complaining that he needs to move his pointer left but that the mouse is at the left edge of the mouse pad and he can not go any further.

I've lived in Canada my entire life, and everyone I know uses dd/mm/yy.
In fact, I recall being taught to do it that way in grade 2.

You're right.
In the Dell Corprate HQ.... "Mike, we want you to make Dells look pretty so people won't notice Vista as much"
"Fuck off, Ballmer"

No if we could only find a healthy environment for all these healthy people to life their long lives in...
Well, in a way it does belong. The original story claims that his departure was cryptic. If this log is accurate, then it removes any ambiguity.
Source? I find it hard to believe that active soldiers on UN duty are openly emailing retired generals about operational details.
All those Furby messages were clogging up my internets tubes anyways. Now I'll be able to send my proper and non-pornograpgic internets easier.
Really? Do you have a reference? I heard that the Yonahs were here to stay as the 'low end' or 'consumer' option.

Lie, Whitewash, Stonewall.
Rinse, Repeat.
These are dark days. And we still have two and a half years to go.
What a horrible state of affairs! Too much choice. Do netflix subscribers also have diamond shoes that are too tight?

Well the first thing I'd do as absolute ruler is get LAID! Then I'd regroup and formulate a sustainment plan.

A series of commercials I was forced to watch, would just be for a series of thing I would vow to never buy.
Maybe he'll find a way around the bars of his jail cell. ;)

Latinos speak Spanish. Twit.
If his company was based in Sao Paulo or Lisbon that'd be great, but in San Jose nobody is going to get it.
