I suspect that this is not really a big deal. Ray Ozzie likely want to have a chance to set up his own exec staff and this guy does not figure in that plan. I won't be surprised if other folks leave over the next couple of years as the company transitions from Gates to Ozzie.

If Vista is as complicated as its specs say it is, I hope Microsoft takes another two years to get this done because I don't want to have to put up with Vista SP1, Vista SP2, Vista SP3, etc. down the line.

This is my beef with Vista. It is late and when it ships, I expect it to be buggy with many follow-on Service Packs. The reason it is late and buggy is the absurd devotion to backwards compatability. I don't understand it. I could accept software compatability, but the hardware aspect is mystifying. Microsoft could spend five more years trying to get Vista to be all things to all people, but its stupid. OS X ships every 18-24 months. Granted this is not a full up new OS, but these releases are much more significant than service packs. I am of the mind that this is possible because they make the hard decisions about what hardware and legacy support should be cut. (Although it is easier for Apple, since they build the hardware too. Perhaps the saga of Vista shows that the Apple model is inherently more technically sound.)

The is slavish devotion to legacy support is a disease. If a person can live with an OS that is almost a decade old, then they really ought to be able to live with its associated browsers. This backwards support has hamstrung Vista, let's not let it creep into Firefox. I love the new upgrades every six months or so. Its wonderful.

I respectfully disagree. The most stable version is XP SP2, in my opinion. However, I do agree with you sentiments. Win98SE was, in its day, a pretty good version of Windows. Certainly better than 95 or (the horrible) ME.

I agree that 802.11n and UWB will not dethrone one another, because they are not really equivalent or competeting.

  12. Re:3.1GHZ Has trouble going through walls on Ultrawideband Signal Passes Data Through Walls · · Score: 4, Informative

One major issue with UWB is the antenna design. Its proving very hard to built antennas that have constant gain over the whole BW. As a result, the antenna essentially induces a transfer function on the transmitted (or recieved) signal. It could be possible to compensate using DSP in the Tx or Rx circuits, however the transfer function is different for differing RF environments. That is, move the metal legged table in your living room and the compensation algorithms are no longer valid. There are a few new antenna designs being proposed that focus on ensuring the s21 values are constant over the whole UWB spectrum, but its still early days with those.

The 'going through walls' part is a bit of a tempest in a teapot. That will come when the RF aspects of UWB are better designed.

RFID chip implants don't have to be mandatory. All you have to do is make it a rule that you can't fly, or cross the border, or get a drivers license without one.

Americans have an inherent right to cross the border. By stipulating that an RFID tag is mandatory to exercise a right makes it de jure mandatory and thus...evil.

Right now it is mandatory to get a passport to exercise the right. But getting a passport does not require you to mutilate your body. Nor does it enable covert tracking of your habits (other than which borders you cross).
