The normal case is that when joining the standardization body, companies agree that if they receive any patents on technologies which become essential to the standard then they agree to allow other groups attempting to implement the standard to use those patents and they agree that the charges for those patents shall be reasonable.
Apple did not join the 3G Patents Ltd group to get the patent under the RAND license. The only choice is to go directly to Nokia and negotiate a different deal.
The RAND wiki article that everyone points to... in the first few sentences says that the company gets non-discriminator and reasonable rates for joining the standards body and cross-licensing patents. Apple is not on that page so it is not part of the body.
Starship Troopers clearly showed that he knows a thing or two about tastefully sticking to source material while bringing in excitement, explosions, and nudity.
Nice post. Having read the book after seeing the movie, I was shocked at how screwed up the movie was. Main movie character(at least by name) dying in the first few pages of the book. Alien Race completely missing from the movie. No Mobile suits...
You got to remember Apple didn't really "Write" OSX it is "Based" on BSD.
sigh...
Yes and no. Userland(ls, ps, grep...) are indeed from BSD. GUI and kernel are definitely not BSD. Since Linux, Windows, Solaris, BSD and others are defined by their kernels... I find it hard to define OSX by its userland.
Maemo is probably more flexible and powerful but Android is beginning to amass an iPhone like library of applications.
Different devices for different purposes. Android is a cellphone OS... Maemo is a tablet OS. Both are linux, but having used both... I would say that Maemo5/N900 are a killer combination and the entire presentation is so much more complete. Just my opinion of course. Enjoy our android phone.
company is silly enough to engage in Big Brother advertising
The Big Brother metaphor has finally been dealt its final blow. Big Brother advertising is propaganda. I think a better term for this new patent would be "Jerk Advertising"
Nothing really new here. Decisions making based on anchors is a large part of why we use Planning Poker when doing our estimations. All it takes is that one guy that says everything is easy to influence everyone's brain to under-estimate a project.
These broad statements... No... Apple could not buy Nokia. They may offer their 30 billion in cash, but Nokia would simply turn it down. You don't simply buy a 100 year old company with so much history behind it. Not only that, but Nokia's losses are not in the device sector.
why would they want to
Oh, I don't know... tons of patents, Navteq, QT, loads of talented engineers, manufacturing facilities... value is not just last quarter. As it stands, Apple did have a quite a few bad quarters in their past as well.
Are those other companies as big and brash as Apple? Apple has an estimated market cap of ~$180 billion, while Nokia has ~$50 billion.
What does Market Cap have to do with anything? Market cap is nothing more than the perceived value of the company by the public based on the value of its stock. Apple is on a hot streak right now. Also, those other companies are going to be Sony Ericcson, Motorola, HTC, Palm, Qualcomm, etc...
Nokia takes patents seriously. It resolved the Qualcomm problems with a $2.29 billion dollar payment that they paid to Qualcomm for use of their patents.
Last I checked the N900 was fairly worthless for connecting to Exchange, which, sad though it may well be, is kind of a critical must-have for a "smart" phone.
Incorrect sir. N810 lacked an exchange client. The N900 has full support for Exchange just like every other Nokia Smartphone: link
Planets seem to be everywhere we look. Right now the ratio between stars to planets in the milky way is about 1 billion to 1(if we use the 400 billion star estimate on the wikipedia page and the 400 stars in the article).
While the ratio will certainly continue to come down as we find more planets, I have to wonder if we are going to end up at the other end of the ratio before too long with a billion planets to a star. It just seems like ever star has multiple planets if we stare at them long enough.
I mean, sure, we can look at the first nine digits and say "yeah, that looks right". But does anyone really know if digits 1.2 trillion through 2.5 trillion in the output are correct?
This is why we have peer review. If you doubt Asian math, replicate the program and compare:-)
The civilization that was living in that planet is traveling to a little blue planet that was nearby at a modest 100 light years. Invasion is scheduled for next Tuesday.
Little did we know... District 13 was filmed with no computer animations at all.
For the Government to use Limewire... for it to even BE there...
Right.. it was the government that was using Limewire. The government is made of people. People make mistakes... especially when you have as many of them working for you(the US government is the largest employer in the US). Epic fail... I don't think so... 1,000s of companies make this mistake every year.
I'm pretty sure a 15-year-old isn't going to want to do "scripting"
Not all 15 year olds are gamers. My first script was for an eggdrop. I also knew several young kids on IRC who scripted for mIRC. Scripting is great because it yields quick results, allows you often to see others code, and gives functional results.
With the ADD world we live in, the investment needed to see results in a 3D graphics world is going to be a hard sell.
$300 million divided by say 20,000 residents is $15K/resident.
15K is honestly not that much money and why do you think the resident will be responsible for this money upfront? The entire project is a business venture. Sure, the resident will pay more than that over time, but communities are created all the time(see apartments) with the return on the investment being met 10-20 years out.
You are missing the point. Some people have a very straight forward 9 to 5 job. Others through usually no fault of their own... end up in strange situations. I could give several examples about mid-day remodeling efforts, wall painting, someone blowing up a microwave, roach infected cable headends, cheap hotels, Windows... etc...
I honestly enjoyed reading this stories. Good morale booster for my current job.
When I buy a car, I don't get a code that could have already been activated/banned etc that completely renders the car disabled;
Lay off the FUD, if you do have this happen, then you will return it and get a new copy of the game. Show me the person who bought a game, found the code not working and just said, "Oh well, I guess I shouldn't play this game". Also, if GameStop doesn't take the return... you can always buy from someone else.
From the wiki article, second sentence:
The normal case is that when joining the standardization body, companies agree that if they receive any patents on technologies which become essential to the standard then they agree to allow other groups attempting to implement the standard to use those patents and they agree that the charges for those patents shall be reasonable.
Apple did not join the 3G Patents Ltd group to get the patent under the RAND license. The only choice is to go directly to Nokia and negotiate a different deal.
Which group would that be? The GP doesn't mention any "group". Do you mean the GSM Association? What makes you think Apple is not a member?
Because they are not on this list
The RAND wiki article that everyone points to... in the first few sentences says that the company gets non-discriminator and reasonable rates for joining the standards body and cross-licensing patents. Apple is not on that page so it is not part of the body.

The problem is, will Nokia keep on updating their free directions?
You do realize that Nokia owns Navteq which re-sells the map data to other companies. Free doesn't mean that it can't be monetized and profitable.
You got to remember Apple didn't really "Write" OSX it is "Based" on BSD.

This is exactly what happened when the blob landed. I'm sure the local sherif just got absorbed.

And for the record.....Apple is older then Nokia.
And for the record..... a google search would of saved you some embarrassment.
Apple could buy Nokia in cash and a bit of stock.

If it had been leaked by uploading it to a server, would they ban the ftp protocol?
That would be espionage. They would be tried for treason.

it's easier for the dealer to roll back the odometer
and against the law. Also, from the wiki... cars today are using digital odometers which aren't as easy to rollback.
