My point is.. you take away my privacy by tapping, I take away your privacy to secrecy... Again, if they need it show me the results proving it... I also want to know the statistics.. how many phone taps to arrests... 10 to 1 ?.. 1000 to 1 ?.. 10,000 to 1 ?
The problem here is.. the machine is looking where the joker isn't.
The thing is.. I am a "results" guy.. show me where this wire tapping has done anything, and I am on board.. but I don't see any.. If I am going to give up this privacy issue.. then I want to see the results.. publicly.. This hiding everything for whatever fantasy world of secrecy they live in doesn't cut it.. Use your tap and make an arrest.. then I'll believe you and say it's justified.. Right now I don't believe it is doing a damn thing.
Like W, Batman sometimes has to push the boundaries of civil rights to deal with an emergency, certain that he will re-establish those boundaries when the emergency is past.
Except the.. "certain that he will re-establish those boundaries when the emergency is past", part doesn't exist for W.
And by the way.. thanks for comparing Batman to Bush.. Now I want to imprison that lawless vigilante freak... and Batman too.
Well although the "We eat 8 spiders in our sleep a year", thing is generally accepted as a myth, because there are no sleep studies done.. I did read a report from a coroner that stated that over 90 percent of analysis of stomach contents come back with insect dna.. so he thinks it may be greater than 8.
I think that will lead to.. well let's call it craziness, once they figure it out.
Other than slashdot, I think the best mod system is multi leveled.. for example...
Warned..... Shows up with their avatar.. A blight on your good name until removed Moderated.. Also shows up, but all posts approved by administrator before posting (extra work) Muted...... Can read but not post.. A time out if you will.. for several days Banned..... Permanent Solution.
Of course with all these some warning is given.. and you should have a Terms of Service (forum rules) that back up what you think is and isn't appropriate behavior... with this system, you start at the top.. and work your way down until banning. If it's a place the poster wants to use, then it will rarely get past the warned or moderated stage... all but "Banned" are meant to be temporary.. just slight attitude adjusters.
I haven't read the blog.. So I don't know how specific it gets, or if it names names.. but you can't assume that this is just to "shut someone up".. it could very well be that they might want to do something with these allegations.. There is also the fact that this blogger has knowledge of alleged crimes.. and this can go either way.. he could find himself a criminal, or a witness... I would think at this point, he needs to take what he knows to whatever authority (justice department ?) for investigation.. because otherwise, I think he will find himself on the criminal side, with obstruction of justice.
Of course my opinions are based on too many TV cop shows...
And I despise "texting" and using email from or to a phone. First of all most phones are a lousy interface for entering text.. and second it takes longer than talking, and third IT'S A PHONE.
You know, I generally don't like talking on phones much either.. but I know that communication in business is important.. ducking calls, or wasting my time making me screw around with texting on a phone will lead to some very interesting communication between us.
For several weeks hotmail has given me a nag screen to update my browser.. I have the Iceweasel equivalent of Firefox 3.. I have written them to try and get rid of the nag.. so far my emails have been a waste of bits.
But you don't have to install from the command line.. or terminal. Synaptic.. look it up. When the heck was the last time you even used a Linux distro ? and which one was it ?
I'd imagine if the key was lost you could still log in as root and create a new user. (I suppose you would need another blank key).. you can probably have multiple keys for different users, have one set up for say business stuff, and another for multimedia.. or whatever you want... Don't know if it would be possible to "log on" in another machine to the key but I imagine it could be set up to do that for say your own desktop at home (probably requiring a version of Mandriva that is compatible), but depending upon the permissions I would think you might be able to access the data on most other Linux boxes.. now losing the key that's just it's own problem, and data would be gone unless backed up.
This setup is probably good for some people.. brings up some interesting scenarios at the airport if they want to search your files.. I have of course read about the laptop searches, but I wonder what they do, if anything, about someone carrying multiple thumb drives ?.. and what do they do if you have drives but no machine ?
Switch to Excite for your email.. After their upgrade (2 weeks Friday) I haven't received any spam.. of course I haven't received any non spam either.. No incoming emails at all.. other Excite users are pissed, as some use it for business, school, job searches etc.. The excite discussion boards are full of people who are dumping them for Yahoo and Gmail.. and there is absolutely no word from Excite explaining the situation. I have a friend who also uses it, and his finally came online yesterday. 2 weeks to switch over their users seems a bit long to me.
I never, under any circumstances, close the door using the doorknob. In the few occasions that I have to for various reasons, I feel uneasy, and that's how it should be.
You could just have easily made a ritual of patting your pockets before you leave.. That's what I do.. and I understand the "uneasy" feeling.. I have this anytime I don't have my keys and wallet on me.. even when I know where they are, and they are safe, It just feels wrong not to have em with me.
Baloney.. You could say that life is unnecessarily hard to have more than one OS.. There is nothing about having both KDE and Gnome as options that is stopping or slowing down anything. You can have Gnome as your primary desktop and run KDE only apps no problem, and vice-versa... You can install both (and more) window managers if you want, and run a different one each day.. no problem.
Wow.. where to start ?... How do you get "don't support the troops" out of the movie ?... Does realizing that not supplying the enemy with weapons that will then kill your own people, not support the troops ? This movie hardly shows the defense industry as evil, but addresses the issue of arms sales which in the real world often is... Let's make the stretch that you want to make, and say that this movie is "Anti War".. How does being Anti War become Un Patriotic ?
What's really going on (the ultimate conspiracey theory)
Who benifits the most from all the instability in Iraq and the middle east ?
Let's see, you've got these foreign fighters coming in to Iraq from Sudia Arabia, and Iran.. and
suppling weapons and keeping the fight alive.. Is it really about religon ?.. maybe.. or
just maybe, that as long as there is trouble in Iraq, the price of oil remains high.. but you have a problem,
your best customer is about to be out of the picture, and he needs to look like he's winning somewhat..
So you let things calm down a bit on that front.. but what to do ??
maybe just maybe, if a certain head of state talks crazy.. the price of oil remains high.
There isn't going to be any invasion or attack on Iran.. it is all about keeping the price
they worked so hard to get, up there.
Your right it is twisted. As the others have pointed out, what is most unfair about paying for incoming text messages, is unlike an incoming call, you don't have a choice not to accept it inless you turn off all text messaging.
I am also a low usage kind of guy.. that's why I went prepaid instead of a "plan". $20 (12 EUR ?) can last me like 2 months.. The initial trick was to buy $100 airtime when I got the phone, now whenever I buy minutes I have a year to use em, where as a lot of the prepaid phones force you to use up your minutes in 30 days in which case you might as well have a plan if your going to have to pay every month.
A nit to pick: When your company builds a product that despite making every reasonable effort to be reliable fails catastrophically, then only the company's financial assets are at stake. When someone makes a decision which can be proved (in court, etc.) to be willfully negligent, the decisionmaker(s) must be held to account for that decision.
I don't disagree.. but it is very easy for the actual owner of a company to be insulated.. unless he personally makes a disastrous decision such as "make it out of pot metal instead of steel" then he is not personally liable. If he was behind the scenes saying.."cheaper, build it cheaper" I don't think that's enough, unless the people he instructed warned him when they reached a level that was unsafe..
That sucks.. T-Mobile is.. 10 cents to send, 5 cents to receive... and they don't charge for the text messages they send me.. I think I have gotten 1 spam text message, and 2 wrong number text messages in about 5 months. (I wish that guy would put the right number for whoever it is, on his damn phone.. his memory isn't cutting it.)
I really could give a crap about SMS.. but I am too lazy to get it turned off, and I figure 15 cents in 5 months ain't going to break me.
Not all corporations have stock holders.. If I have a ton of money, and want to start a business, I would incorporate to protect my stash that is not invested in the business. Obviously as owner I could hire and fire and direct behind the scenes, but if my company say.. killed somebody, they can only go after my companies assets. that's why most businesses are incorporated in the first place.
Many owners (same with shareholders) have no (or very little) idea of the day to day operations of a company they own, and sometimes the people actually running it act like they are god, or that the company is theirs to do however they please. They should be held responsible for their decisions. And owners and stockholders should take a more active role to insure that the company is running a way that reflects their own ethics.. and if it isn't then as an owner you clean house, or as a shareholder reinvest in a company that does... problem is, it's all about the $$Green$$ and people will leave their money in an evil company as long as it's making them money.
In fact, if I were a terrorist or a nation-state, I'd consider building a team that becomes a major and prolific contributor to a few high profile OSS projects like, say, Apache or Sendmail.
What is wrong with you ?
I don't get all you people and your "If I were a terrorist".. scenarios.. freaking scared ass whimps the lot of you. Stop worrying, and live life.. You letting the boogie man get to you.
Well there is such a thing as a Buddhist terrorist.. just as there have been Christian terrorists... but I know that is not your point. This same person would probably have answered the same if asked about Muslims.. There are a few ignorant people out there, no doubt about it.
What gets me is some of the mind blowing things said that are not part of government sponsored fear (the terrorism thing for example)... Like the gal who was on the show "Smarter than a fifth grader", who said she thought Europe was a country... it was ha ha very funny and cute.. but really that is more of an example of how self absorbed the people in this country are.
Have not gotten any incoming mail from excite for a week since they "upgraded" it.. Sad thing is, many people use it for business like ebay.. and one guy was waiting to here back from a potential employer.. I personally was stuck waiting for a tracking number for a package which has arrived, before any email has.
I guess it's not "cool" like gmail, so nobody gives a crap..

Sleep tight.

Well you could have thrown in the Bee Gees too.. but AC/DC kind of made up for it all.

Hell you don't even need evidence, just innuendo.. That's really how we ended up in Iraq in the first place.
