I downloaded quite a few distro's before I had DSL... the trick was to just start a download, and go to bed.. or start one and go to work. The thing is, some distro's are base installs, and if you install it, it then downloads a whole lot more of the system which means tying up the computer for several more hours... for most usage dialup is perfectly fine.. but when it comes to getting ISO's and installing, broadband sure is nice.
Although I think Dune is a must read for every Science Fiction fan, I don't think it's all that great a place to start for these kids.. It's a great story, but a complicated read for someone these ages I think.. Actually the Foundation series is in my opinion less complicated, and easier reading.
My personal progression was.. mysteries, then horror, followed by Sci-Fi at about age 16. My first Sci-Fi book was a collection of short stories.. and Dune was actually my second, which was picked because it was the thickest book I could find for a long bus trip.. Sci-Fi has been my favorite ever since.. although I like the occasional cross genera like Koontz.
I think a collection of short stories would be a good choice.. perhaps Greg Bear.
No.. I could be brave, and have all the abilities to be.. say a police officer, and take the job.. That doesn't make me a hero.. My actions after I have the job, do... And you can also argue that taking a job such as this, is no indicator of your bravery, your abilities, or your admirable qualities.. however your actions once working the job do... and I would also point out that you could also be a hero without being either brave or particularly able.
What if the job someone was paid to do required the person to have "distinguished courage or ability" to do it in the first place? Are they still a hero, or just doing their jobs?
.
Both.. if they are.. admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities.
.
Having the courage and ability means nothing of your actions are not noble and admirable.
Some people have it coming. I'm not saying one way or the other here, OK. I don't know Mr Reiser, nor have I any emotional investment one way or the other. I just don't believe murder is always the heinous evil crime some might think. Sometimes, it's the wheel of karma turning. Sometimes, it's a public service.
Let's assume (I don't know one way or the other) that she is evil, performed physical and emotional abuse.. took all his money, cheated on him.. etc.. etc.. that's bad for him.. but sometimes you just got to accept the bad that's happened, and start over from scratch.. maybe it sucks, maybe it's unfair, but that is what you do.. not doing some stupid thing to make your situation worse (if not hopeless now)
Just as it's pointless and destructive to play the "blame game" in a relationship.. so is it pointless and destructive to try and "get even".
She definitely has some responsibility for the death, but the kids parents also have just as much in my opinion... Of the things you listed above, I think child abuse is the best fit against her.. and although her parents may not have been abusing her, they were obviously negligent.
Sometimes the bad reviews are helpful.. For example, I put together a system on the cheap for my brother. I used solid and affordable components... now when I bought the case, it should have been just fine for the other components, and the majority of reviews were great, and it was dirt cheap.. but there were some bad reviews where people said the power supply was bad, or wouldn't boot... long story short (too late) I also ended up being one of the lucky people where the power supply was crap... the minute it didn't boot, I immediately ordered a decent power supply.. and everything was fine.. If I had only relied on the middle or best reviews, I would have been wondering if it might be something else like the motherboard.
If Google provides these logs in paper form.. just converting it into something that they can develop into accurate statistics would be a huge undertaking..
But you know, if an employee comes up to me and says "You know, that Jonesy is a terrible slacker, doesn't do anything right, and is late all the time.".. Well, that might be something for me to look out for with Jonesy, but it doesn't improve my opinion of the employee who told me all that... In fact it usually gives me a negative impression of them.. and if it turns out that my opinion of Jonesy's work disagrees, well then I think that the employee is a damn lier, and he'll probably be out the door before Jonsey.
But you also don't expect your mechanic to be looking in your trunk or glove box if he's changing your oil.
I don't think it's a matter of not reporting a crime, it's a matter of searching for something illegal when that is unrelated to fixing the problem.. If you remember the case of the guy fired from his job for having child porn on his laptop that was downloaded unknown to him by bots, then this is a concern. It is a simple matter to run a rescue CD with the customer present, yank the files they want to keep, and then just format over everything else. If someone really has illegal crap they know about, they are not very likely to take it to these places to be fixed. It's the unknown crap that could be installed without your knowledge that could lead to you being labeled a sex offender just to save some office files family photos or mp3s.
A little harsh that this is modd'd (couldn't resist) Offtopic... Although I can't say "never", I really have little use for text messages.. The one scenario where it's use made sense to me (over actually talking) was when I wanted to give a friend in a later time zone some information, and didn't want to take a chance of waking him in case his phone was on.. and if he had the net, I wouldn't have had to text him.... to me talking directly or to voicemail, makes much more sense... I think it's relevant, if you were discussing 3 way calling or call forwarding charges then the price of it compared to the number of people actually using it is something to examine.. I think it's taken quite a long time for SMS to take off here in the US.
Alright, I got 2 more years to hit the demographic.. but I am 8 years over 40.. the internet of course goes back farther, but the internet with the WWW came into being in the early 90's.. I think I first hooked up onto the net late 93 or early 94 IIRC.(old people and their memory problems).. but for at least 10 years before that I had occasion to have accounts with.. The Source, Compuserve, AOL, Prodigy, and Genie at various times.. before any of these became true "internet" providers... now I am probably somewhat rarer in my age group, but people in my group started to catch up by the late 90's.. and actually in the past 5 years or so, computers have become so cheap, there just isn't any excuse not to have one.. I guess it depends how far beyond 50 your thinking.. would not be surprised if 50-55 met the 50 % easily.
I understand what you mean about the friends.. In my ex's case she had this cycle.. depression, short time of relative normalcy, followed by mania, which would build until she had the hallucinations.. followed of course by depression... For the people in her life, dealing with the depression is hard and although her mania's started out somewhat positive, they eventually built up into rants of negativity... so she is unpredictable, and the people that care for her never know what to expect.. so they tend to avoid her.. but the best of people (who are really only those who should be friends) have learned what all this is about and are understanding and forgiving.
As I said, she is my ex girlfriend. We were together for 4 years, and it was rough. With the cycles as I said, I had to endure quite a lot of the negative symptoms.. endless hours of why the world and people were so bad.. endless hours of talk about porn.. endless hours of how I was going to cheat on her.. endless hours of what are you looking at.... But I understood her condition.. What led to the final breakup, was that after 4 years of hearing how I was going to cheat on her, she had a manic episode and hooked up with another guy !.. that was it for me... I finally reached the point of not being able to excuse her because of her condition.
Ok, onto more positive things.. What you might consider as a backup in the future, is to open a webmail account, and every so often email your work to yourself as an attachment.. Then if your computer crashes to the point of reinstall, you could just retrieve it from your email.
Well, sorry for the rant at the beginning.. and again, hang in there !

Having had a girlfriend who was diagnosed as schizoaffective, I know that you probably go through hell. I do want to tell you something related to the post you linked to.. It is highly doubtful that anyone "hates" you for any post. The thing about discussion boards is it can end up with people trying to show each other up and trying to prove how much smarter they are.. and true there are going to be times when you may say something someone else doesn't like, but to say they "hate" you would be incorrect.
In your situation, discussion boards can be good for you.. but.. Just make sure you don't over anaylise peoples responses.. and remember this really doesn't mean squat in the big picture of life. Mod points and karma won't get you a nickel off a burrito at Taco Bell... and people don't sit at home thinking about what Orion Blaster posted that they did or didn't agree with.
Although you may not be ready to go to work, you might consider using your skills at home to help some open source projects, or even just starting you own project (even if for fun).. just keep things as manageable as you want, and work when your feeling good, and concentrate on your health when your not feeling so good.
But when I get a kernel update, I cringe and avoid installing it
Kernel updates are 99.99 % unnecessary most of the time, for the average user.. really they should just limit it to major version releases.. or otherwise make it to where you have to go looking to install it until the next version.
We used to sell cigarettes in machines here in the good ole USA, before the Mormons took over everything.
I'll qualify the hit against Mormons with this.. Used to be that you could smoke on the Greyhound bus.. until you hit the Utah state line... I've watched as these puritan laws have been passed over the years to the point that someday I think they are just going to outlaw tobacco altogether.
preventing a minority of the users from taking a majority of the available bandwidth.
No.. it's about providing enough bandwidth so there IS NO SHORTAGE.. You have no problem with increasing processor speeds as user requirements demand them.. why would you have a problem with increasing the bandwidth available ?
It's been a really long month.
Yeah.. remember when music CD players first came out.. my dad, always an early adopter, paid $2000 for a Sony.. Now that hurts looking back.

Why doesn't he focus his energy on the company HE works for ? ... I think I'll spend tomorrow seeing if I can't fix our competitions problems for them.

Actually, your negative example is unknown.. Being dead may be a positive experience or a negative experience, or perhaps no experience whatsoever.
Or perhaps an evildoer can flip the switch on the plane when your halfway across the Atlantic, so you land on the nice soft ocean.
