So default installs... 4 with gnome, 4 with KDE, 1 your choice... and of course on any of these you can add the other manager anyway.. I don't see any conspiracy against KDE... people use what they want.. There is Kubuntu, same people, but it's not in the top 10 (it's 15th).. If done right, I am sure it's a great window manager.. My experiences with it have been ok, but I prefer gnome.. BTW gnome can be done wrong too.. I tried an alpha release of Suse with gnome, and hated their menu.
Wow..you care too much about Slashdot mod points.. Anything you might have said that would have some relevance, is lost in your mod-point jealousy.. just make your rebuttal, and let those with mod points do what they will.. and maybe you will get some points. Crying to the original poster about it, is stupid.. he doesn't mod himself.
I'm too lazy to install Krita.. How does it deal with editing multiple photos ? are they tabs do you have to open up multiple instances, or do new windows pop up ?
I bring this up because.. there are only two windows in gimp.. The toolbar window and the photo your editing.. until you load another photo then there are 3 windows the 2 photos your working on and the toolbar... The system of having the "save" and "save as" dialogs on the window of the photo your editing makes it less likely that you will accidentally save changes to a photo that you didn't want to do... for example, you have 4 photos that you are cutting from and one new photo that you are pasting to.. If the save dialog was maintained by the toolbar window it would get a bit messy to decide which photos get saved and which don't.. so it's not a bad system really.
But really to each their own.. I don't do a lot of photo editing, and gimp works fine for me after I went through the learning curve.
Have you tried just running Ubuntu as a live CD ? does your DSL work that way ?
Does the DSL modem works with a Windows machine ?.. in other words.. if you plug in a Windows computer right now.. no problems ?
I guess what I am asking is.. is the DSL modem already "set up" ?.. It's not a new account or anything ?
I think you really need to get your DSL problem solved first.. then your dosbox & midi problems will be easier to solve, because apt will fix the dependencies.
the war and the assault on civil liberties. Neither one of those, AFAICT, has been affected in any way by lobbyists, campaign contributions, or earmarks.
If there weren't billions of dollars being made off of these, then maybe I'd believe that.
You know... I have no problem with the whole blog thing, and there is a "possibility" of finding some news at some of them I suppose.. but this blog has a whopping 182 comments on the SP1 release.. of which there were the "dozen" problems.. This isn't any gage of anything.. and to top it off.. the blog is not at the link in the Slashdot submission.. it's at.... http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/default.aspx
I think in the US that you will find that drinking is a logistical problem.. If your going to go out drinking, it requires a way to get back.. It's a pain in the butt.. I know I guy who got popped for driving a bicycle while intoxicated.. and he was riding the bike because he thought he was doing the right thing by not driving a car.. Taxis are also not numerous or cheap in many towns.. and if you have to walk, what are the odds a pub will be withing a couple of block of your house ?
Your own quote from the charter makes the point with regard to politics...Which means (in case you have comprehension problems) that you respect other countries ideals (whether or not you believe in them).. search the whole document, it says nothing about principles of freedom.. or that the Olympics are meant to promote freedom.
I said nothing about consumerism... I said that it is a sporting competition between countries, that's all. Yes there is patriotism for each country.. and I think you seem to apply your patriotism to the Olympics as a whole, so you see it as promoting "Freedom".. but a communist country has just as much right to compete and host the Olympics as any other.. That is the real ideal of the Olympics.. competition without politics...
I believe that all drugs (yes, even crack cocaine, methamphetamine, etc) should be legalized
I think your on crack.. I understand your point of people getting caught now being branded criminals who can't get a job.. but tough titties.. Meth in particular is evil shit.. I have no sympathy for the people who make it.. sell it.. and even those that use it.. and I can spot a user with their "muscular dystrophy" gyrations a mile away.. and sure it's their "personal choice" to fuck themselves up chemicaly, just as it's their personal choice to fuck themselves up legally.
Sometimes it's not a matter of having a criminal record, but whether or not it was disclosed on the application.. Lying on a app is the thing.
When I have done hiring, I have come across many apps with criminal records.. to me the offense was what I judged on.. for example violent crimes and spousal abuse immediately went to the trash., A drunk driving offense if several years old, was ok.. Sad thing is, you would be surprised how little checking is actually done on applications.,, you want honest people, but sometimes they screw themselves out of a job by listing their record, when it usually isn't even checked. (unless the position specifically requires such a check).. course down the road is immediate termination if it's found you lied on your application.
Do the athletes know that people are dying in tibet just so China can run the Olympic torch through tibet?
Is that the reason ?.. pretty simplistic, incorrect and emotional summary... What has really happened, is that in Tibet, they had riots by Tibetan people who want independence from China who has controlled it since 1951 (although also controlled many times by China for centuries).. Now in these riots, cars were torched, and all the violence that goes with riots escalated, and people have been killed both sides... As in many places in the world, this is a place where you have a group of people who don't want to be part of the government that is ruling them.. depending upon which side your on, it's rebellion or terrorism when the freedom fighters riot and burn.
I am not going all pro China on you here.. but the reality is, that Tibet is ruled by China right now.. and if there are riots, then they have to deal with it... If there are continued problems in Tibet, then it is up to the Chinese to decide if they want to give it up (yeah right), or continue to deal with the problems.. I don't think any country is going to help Tibet in any attempt at getting freedom.. just not going to realistically happen.
Not to nitpick, but how are the Olympics representative of fundamental freedoms ?
It's a sports competition between countries.. That you apply a sense of patriotism to it, and extrapolate your ideals to it, is nice.. but there are other countries participating that have different ideals... If you only want to compete with people with your own ideals, then you would just do your own competition in you own country.
The title of the article is "The Real Reason We Use Linux".. not how to sell Linux to your boss and friends.
Actually it is a bit presumptuous to say "We".. but I don't take offense to it.. "Many" would have been better.
There are many reasons to use Linux, and I think the point he was trying to make is that the "fun" aspect is often overlooked.
His opinion is probably more relevant to the home enthusiast, than the corporate IT guy trying to sell his boss..
And BTW you haven't been here very long if you think this is the lamest story ever.
The first part of your post doesn't make sense.. You don't like to "tinker", you just want things to work.. Well at that time Win98 was working just fine.. Why would you try and change if you like things that just work ?...
For me, at that particular time (1999), Linux was puzzle.. and the fun of it was the challenge of making it do what Windows could do.. and exploring the unix way of doing things.. learning how things work.. and tinkering until you could do an equivalent task.. When I read that someone could do something on their computer that I couldn't, I read and read and researched and tried everything until I could do it too. There was some satisfaction to solving a puzzle like getting your modem to dial and connect to the internet for the first time.
Things are definitely different these days, and I see no reason for the average person not to try Linux.. but at that time, you just had to be a little more than the average person. It's not elitist.. that's just where Linux was at the time in it's development.
Bad times are coming.. and sorry if you don't like it, but eventually something is going to have to be done about the debt.. and that's gonna mean paying some taxes... Sadly when the Dems take over and do what fiscally responsible people do (pay bills).. the Republicans will boo-hoo.. and point at the high tax Dem administration who is trying to fix the mess we're in.. But they'll get 2 terms to fix it, before the Republicans get a shot at taking it back.
Keep your damn guns, you may need em when China comes to repossess all your stuff...
Creative history there.. The Dems have been the majority how long now ?
Besides, I think it is besides the point.. as these people working airport security could be either Democrat or Republican or Independents or whatever.. That's not the problem.. it's threat assessment, decision making, and chain of command. I suspect that an inspector at the checkpoint who comes across a problem like gasoline on shoes has no authority to make a decision.. it probably more of a CYA chain of command with very few people who can actually make a decision, covering a large area of the airport... sure the guy who detected the problem is smart enough to realize that there is no threat, he just isn't allowed to make the decision... THAT"S WHAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED.
Yet Linux is arguably less successful than Microsoft and Apple in the PC space.
You don't sound very sure... Nobody knows how successful Linux really is.. for sure... I suppose if all the distro's could truly track all the downloads, and torrents and CD's burned for friends and then total them all up.. you might have some numbers to compare. It would be interesting to compare the number of dual boot Mac/Windows vs Windows/Linux as well.. but I doubt anybody has those numbers either... but you know what, I just don't care about market share.. I been playing with various versions since 99' and watched it grow from something NOBODY knew anything about, to something that many people know what your talking about.. and even meet people by chance that are using it... is it successful ?.. For something without any marketing, I'd say yes... It would be curious see Novel/Suse actually run a TV ad campaign for a short time to sell their Linux offerings just to see what happens.
The planet would get pretty crowded after awhile... Lots of ramifications for birth control, and abortion.. perhaps human hunting would even become a sport to "thin the herd".. maybe every 200 years or so, you have to survive a hunt to continue living.
But I agree it would be cool to have all the extra time.. because I am a procrastinator.
Because everyone in the UK pays a special tax that buys these programs.
sshhh.. don't tell anyone, but because of the writers strike, I have resorted to watching many BBC shows using bittorrent.. stuff I would probably never have watched.
Day 1: You go to a web site and look at cell phones, don't buy one yet.
Day 2: You go to a web site and look at cell phones, don't buy one yet.
Day 3: You go to a web site and look at cell phones, find one you like and purchase it.
Day 4-365: You get ads for cell phones you don't need, because you already bought one.
After that post, I happened to notice I was checked for "testing the new slashdot discussion system".. I unchecked it to go back to the old one.. still I don't remember checking it.. strange... but things are better now.

Oh wait, now I've posted that it will succeed, nullifying your attempt to make it succeed by posting failure.. so It will fail..
but wait...
