What's the point of XP on an eePC ?.. I know you had all these die hards that got them with Linux, and then became elite hackers by installing XP on them.. whoopdy do.. and now they can be purchased with XP.. still what does it offer that's better ?.. nothing.. in fact the cooler "mod" is to install compiz, with say eeXubuntu, and get some desktop effects.
If we take a look at some countries news, about the US for example.. They could be reporting legitimate and accurate events of the news.. but being unfavorable to the politics of the US, then it would be considered by the hard liners to be propaganda..
On the reverse side.. inaccurate news reported "as facts", that support local causes.. is in essence propaganda that is reported and received by the people as news.
Lack of trust in news reporting, has been infamous in Russia.. however, the US is catching up to them gradually. I fear that the only thing that will tackle the problem would be to create some ethics laws.. The industry used to police themselves fairly well.. but I think that's all out the window. These conglomerates are politically biased.. CNN (who I used to like) for example, was atrocious in how it handled John Edwards in the debates.. they cared not for facts, but "they" decided who were the top two candidates regardless of little things like election results.
Where's the mod points when you need em ?.. That's exactly what my search on the subject came up with. I think the article the parent links with, is FUD.. that article names no sources, and spouts off BS about terrorists and car dealers.. when this is meant to be something like a credit card company checking the list before issuing a card.
Fundamental parenting, given by parents for ages...
"don't play in the street"
"don't run with scissors"
"don't talk to strangers"
Chat rooms are strangers... Why would anybody, as a parent, want to let their kids talk to strangers ?.. regardless if it is "safe" to do so ?
For people that you know, there is a thing called instant messaging.
For all I care, chat rooms can be as sick, vile, disgusting, and perverted as possible.. I just don't care. It's a medium of strangers communicating.. If a child is exposed to it, then their parents shouldn't be allowed to have kids in the first place.. It's simple, just remove any access to chat on a kids computer.
And I triple dare you to find a country where you can not hack up older prostitutes and put the pieces in plastic bags into the trunk (boot if your in the UK) of your rental car.
What I get out of it, is it's best not to travel internationally with "any" porn or even racy photos.. and what's the need to travel with this stuff anyway ?.. In a "porn emergency", it would take how long to find this stuff on the internet in another country ?
What's more of a concern to me, is things like movies and music files (which might be handy in a foreign country).. Copyright protection has previously been a focus of custom agents.. of course usually they are finding crates of shrink wrapped CD's where piracy is the obvious intent.. but if you have avi's or mpg's and burning software.. I suppose it wouldn't be hard for them to stretch it into intent to commit piracy.. if they wanted to be a$$holes.
I understand what you were trying to say.. but there are laws (even in Russia) against doing such things.. so your attempt fails.. and please get yourself neutered.. Thanks
And I say this... Tibet was ruled by an awful form of government before the Chinese invaded and conquered them. Now they are under the government of the conquerors. Sure they can have a better government than they have now.. every country on the planet can have a better government than they have now. The Tibetans are no different than any other group of people who's territory is taken, and they are forced to become part of that society. Free the American Indians, Free the Aborigines.. etc etc..
To help the Tibetan people, then you work with China to improve China (which includes Tibet). Insurgencies, freedom fighters, riots, protests, arming Tibetans to fight for democracy, or sending in troops from other countries to free them.. is all that really the best thing ?
Well, I read it.. and I'll give you my take on both sides.. First the serfdom thing is not disputed. Now we can continue to call it the nice "serfdom" word I suppose... Just to play devils advocate, I will point out that we have also liberated people from things like serfdom.
Let's get to brass tacks though.. All of this is about fighting communism. The exact same situation exists with the Palestinians and Israel.. and strangely enough, my position is the same. Throughout human history, countries are invaded and conquered.. it happens. It seems we only become involved, when it's about democracy.. So where were we before the Chinese invaded ?.. we didn't give a crap about spreading democracy there when there was slavery (um I mean serfdom), but we sure felt like stopping communism there... too late, it's been conquered.
If it's about freedom, then offer immigration to any Tibetans who want to come.. and put em up in the mountains of Colorado or something.. We have cities that are larger than the whole Tibetan population.. and there you go.. problem solved. And as a bonus, the "right wing hippies ?" won't have to go so far to Shangra La... I think there's been plenty of making and remaking of maps in history.. enough already. let's just get on with improving the lives within the borders as they are drawn now.
"Free Tibet" is about Tibetans ruling themselves. Nothing more, nothing less.
Before the Chinese they were a feudal theocracy... in reading this.. http://www.michaelparenti.org/Tibet.html
it doesn't sound very "free"... to many movies of smiling peaceful monks, I reckon.
The personal desktop market isn't profitable when you have to compete against an illegal monopoly. Even with Free software as a base.
I don't know.. you have to look at what's happening with the eee. Don't know if Xandros gets much out of it, but I imagine it doesn't hurt them.. and now Suse is doing the same thing with HP's version of the eee.. these two are companies who have been pursuing the desktop market for awhile.. New people exposed to Linux in the numbers that they have recently, leads to more people trying it their desktop. That these 2 are OS's that you can "buy" gives some people more of a sense that they have support behind doing it. Maybe it's a mistake for Redhat to continue to overlook that.
The HP looks pretty good.. Don't care for Suse though.. Am sure it would run Xubuntu (pretty sure anyway), but I wonder about getting it to do the compiz thing like the EEE with the Via graphics chip they have on the HP.
And now the domain has become an accreditation of sorts... must be a legit school, because they have.edu on their web site ?... considering there are many other schools in the world...edu is poorly used, because you have to be accredited to US standards.. so it's basically a marketing ploy for US schools.
Now, the Gimp actually has three windows, The document window, the tool browser and the layers palate
Mine does not.. When I open gimp (2.4.5) from the main menu.. I get one window, the toolbar.. When I open an image file with gimp I get two windows.(the image and the toolbar)
The layers window I have to open seperately, if I want to use it.. for say making an animated gif... And really, if it defaults for you as opening on startup, what's the big deal to close it, if your not using it ?... when a program opens with a "tip for the day" do you just leave it open ?
I guess that I'm saying that the only people with free will, would be psychopaths.. and even then, if there are consequences that affect the decision, that is an outside influence.
The person with a conscience would not purposely kill a stranger if they knew there were no consequences, or outside influence.(for example fighting in a war, protection etc)
The person without a conscience, might or might not, if there were no consequences, or outside influence.. seems the closest thing to what free will would be.
Free will as I understand it, means that there is no outside force controlling your decisions.
In the religious sense, this means that god is not in control of your decisions.. so when you make a bad decision.. even though god is all powerful, it is your fault, because you have free will.
However, medically it is known that there is a conscience of sorts hardwired in the brain. I think it was 60 minutes or some thing with Diane Sawyer, where they showed this little boy who was missing it (was pretty scary)... tried to find, but couldn't.. although this may help.. http://www.amazon.com/Hardwired-Behavior-Neuroscience-Reveals-Morality/dp/0521860016
So if your brain is hardwired to tell you that killing is wrong, then the idea of free will, is a little less free.
I'm guilty of invisibility too.. and it relates to the mix of family that are contacts.. Usually the adults are no problem. they will IM you with something that you don't mind.. it's the kids, with their.. "hi".. "what are you doing ?".. and basically nonsense.. that keep me invisible... and most of the other adults are doing the same thing.. it they have something they might want to say they go visible, and then the others go visible too, and the IM's are done.. and every goes back to pretending they are not online.
From the front page of www.distrowatch.com based on 6 month history
But I looked at your page also (good find).. I actually agree more with your list, and I'd substitute Xandros for FreeBSD to keep it all Linux.. and you would have the major players.
Strange...update.. I think early april fools, but the list of Linux distros at distrowatch,... is just weird.. see for yourself.

One groups news is another's propaganda and vice versa.
"don't play in the street"

"don't talk to strangers".... pretty fundamental.
And I triple dare you to find a country where you can not hack up older prostitutes and put the pieces in plastic bags into the trunk (boot if your in the UK) of your rental car.

Put that on a friggen sign.

And the RIAA knows what their special purpose is for...

Someone who suffers from clinical paranoia would never get on a train in the first place.

I gotta wonder.. If the US had done this, would we be reading about this on Thursday or Saturday ?
Tear down and reassemble the PC box.. timed of course.
Why did you put that PC together so quickly, Gump?
You told me to, Drill Sergeant
Interesting about this is that the US pays for that unworkable socialized medicine in Iraq
