I don't mind the "pop-up in the middle" ads when they work.. problem is they don't work correctly sometimes.. and links to posts seem like they get covered.. the real thing that bothers me is when you click on a post, and there is maybe 2 sentences showing and then a half a minute later the rest of the post shows up... slashdot is just getting really annoying to use.
Although I agree with you that bolts which are improperly graded is a serious problem, I have to wonder about the cause of this fall.. Lets say he was torquing the bolt as you say, he would have still fallen if the socket slipped off the bolt.. so obviously he was not being safe... What's a greater concern, is that if all of these cheap bolts had survived torquing, it would not be known that there were weak bolts holding the building together.
I would also point out, that when buying materials for construction, you get what you pay for.. This is probably more of a problem of the person buying the materials (the bolts) finding the cheapest bolts at that grade they could find... The sad thing is that Saturn, a spin-off of GM, probably has very good buying power with Fastener companies, and they could have gotten really good quality bolts from them at the cheap price they probably paid.. But the construction company probably never even considered that when buying materials.
- GNOME needs to be more usable. Sometimes I think that it was made for 5 year olds.
I am not a Gnome Fanatic (actually I use XFCE most of the time).. but what do you mean by this ?.. what's not usable ?
As to KDE, I have no problems with it either... I probably should spend some time with it again, as it has been a long time.. perhaps when the latest version comes out I will... but I don't see a major difference where it counts.. They both use many common applications, and for the most part there are equivalent "K" apps to "G" apps and vice versa.. KDE seems to give you more options for tweaking things like window border colors (although you can in gnome too),, but that has nothing to do with usability.
You know what's interesting, is that at one time ICQ was the top dog in instant messengers.. now they are (among others)
Obviously the billions of free disks in the mail that AOL sent out, got AIM up there in usage.. but I was a long time ICQ user and original Hotmail user.. after Hotmail switched to MS, and they tied in MSN Messenger with hotmail, that's what led me to switch to MSN.. all my family members also switched, and we have been there ever since.. That's the real difficulty of it all.. let's say AIM is suddenly the best thing ever.. to get all my contacts, and their contacts (and their's etc) to switch, can turn into a big deal.
Schizoaffective disorder.. familiar with it (my ex GF also diagnosed with it). It's for someone who has episodes with schizophrenic symptoms.. It's quite a controversial diagnoses, and treatment is all over the map,.. basically doctors experimenting with the "drug of the moment"
I apologize for saying you don't know what your talking about.. I totally agree that doctors don't understand what's going on completely.. however, there is obviously something there with the brain chemistry.
Believe me, I did a lot of research to try and find help.. an interesting avenue, had to do with toxins in the body such as mercury, and other metals.. and there are some food allergies that will also cause symptoms such as your wife has., as well as nutrition aspects such as vitamin B deficiency.
As to schizophrenia, it runs in families, so there is something genetic going on... My ex GF had it rampant in her family.. although this was not her diagnoses. She is a difficult case.. She has schizophrenia in her family, had childhood trauma (her uncle killed himself in front of her), got into alcohol and drugs as a teen, including acid... so how do you figure out any cause with all that ??
One other observation... I knew a normal woman (whatever normal is), who got into meth, and in a matter of months she was talking to aliens, and absolutely was showing schizophrenic symptoms... has nothing to do with your wife, or my ex GF, but just shows how some people can mess themselves up with that crap.
Well, I wish both of you well.. It's a tough road. Hang in there.
I would have to ask.. approved by who ?, and what were the standards for approval ?
There are usually 3 methods used to measure blood alcohol level.. Breathalyzer, urine, and blood tests. Usually the breathalyser is used to to determine if one of the other 2 tests should be taken, and those results are used as evidence against you, not the breathalyser... at least that's how they do it in California.. So this leads me to the conclusion, that the breathalyser has a known degree of inaccuracy that they are uncomfortable using as evidence.. I would also imagine that the other problem is there is no sample of the evidence retained.(you cant keep a vial of breath)
Interesting.. I had a similar experience with German.. I had done the Pimsleur thing up to about half of German III, and then traveled to Germany and spoke English most of the time.. until I went to a Pub and had a few.. then I was having a great time practicing !.. But after I sobered I was pretty much back to limited use of German.. It's not my knowledge or pronunciation that holds me back either.. maybe it's just a little more friendly and relaxed atmosphere of a pub combined with relaxed inhibitions after a few beers.
uhhh.. sure. The levels of Dopamines and Serotonin produced in the brain are measurable. Too much or not enough of either of these and your all over the place mood wise. Too much Dopamine leads to Psychotic behavior and schizophrenia... too little and you become unmotivated and apathetic... with Serotonin, too much or too little puts you at opposite ends of the scale.. depression and mania... it IS a balancing act with the drugs treating (as best they can) the depression until the scale is tipped and mania sets in... and manic behavior is not fun either.
Whether or not you want to believe it.. there are parts of the brain that regulate these chemicals, and in some people it's broken.. just like people with diabetes have a broken pancreas.
Dude.. I lived with someone suffering with it.. congratulations to you for having a healthy brain.. but you do not know what your talking about.
After living with two different women who had depression, I have times when I feel like the only treatment is quarantine.
Well in my case the woman I lived with, put herself in self imposed quarantine from the world (except me).. It was very difficult to live with.. you want to help, but there is nothing you can do that will really help.. and difficult to go to work and try an live your normal life when you know she's at home stuck in a depression often sitting in a dark room thinking about suicide at the worst of times.. the only way it worked, caused me to miss out on a lot of sleep, so that she would be sleeping most of the time I was not actually with her.. I lived for several years on 5 hours or less sleep a night.
Not to go all guru on you.. but as I said it worked and works for me.. and began working for me when I chose it.. a little background..
I was in a period in my life where I was alone, didn't seem to have any real friends, let alone a girlfriend, was a barfly every night.. hated my life for the most part.. what happened was that my brother took a course in school, and they made him read this book "Psycho-Cybernetics" (nothing to do with Scientology) as part of the course.. he left it and some other crap at my house one day, and I was bored and read a good part of it.. This is where I read of "choosing to be happy".. It's a simple concept I know, but here is basically the gist of it..
Most people think.. If I had this car, or job, or money, or girlfriend (etc.. etc..) THEN I will be happy.. but being an unhappy person is most likely keeping you from getting these things that supposedly will suddenly make you happy.. Who wants to be around (or hire) an unhappy person ?,,, Happiness IS a state of mind (other than chemical imbalance).. So you choose to be happy first.. then when you do get the job/car/girlfriend it is like gravy on top of the happiness.
As I said, it's a simple concept,, and will not work for people with serious chemical problems.. but if you think about it, it makes sense.. Perhaps it works for me, because I want it to.. or maybe something else as you say changed in my brain.. who knows.. all I know is I changed myself from wanting happiness to being happy, and everything else that comes is just extra... I have been through some serious crap in my life since, I've had some bad, and a lot of good too.. and I've always remembered reading that, and that's the way I choose to be.
I submit that anybody who says you can 'decide' to not be depressed has absolutely no idea what they're talking about.
As others have pointed out.. if you are talking about a chemical imbalance, then no amount of "positive thinking" is going to change that... However there are situational depressions.. ie a person who's brain chemistry is such that if the situation were different (say.. girlfriend didn't dump him) then they would not be depressed... these people can be helped by choosing their own mood.
I lived with a manic depressive for a long time.. We both had many of the same "bad times".. no amount of positive attitude would help her. My depressions were short lived, but I still had to deal with hers which were at a higher intensity and lasted a long time. When our pet died for example.. very sad time for me.. sad time for us both,, but I got over it in a few days.. it took her months before she had a day where she didn't spend an hour crying.. and even after a year an a half there were times she would break out in tears... there is absolutely no control of emotions with the brain chemistry she had.. and she was medicated to the extreme.
There was a time however, when I was an extremely unhappy person..(this is different from clinical depression).. and finally one day I read that happiness was a choice.. that you choose to be happy.. well it does work for me, and even when everything goes to hell, I can still be happy.. but then I don't have a chemical imbalance. When I first started living with the manic depressive, I tried like heck to help her with this attitude.. It was a waste of time.. it can't be done any more than telling a drunk to "think sober"
BTW.. the depression bad to deal with, but mania could be even worse... but whole other ball of wax.
Actually, I think the defense messed up that possible scenario.. When searching for info on the mail order bride part of it, I found that the defense showed her mail order bride profile, and then went on to state that as late as the last day she was seen, that she was looking on craigslist for new romance partners... so in attacking her character by insinuating that she was using romance to get what she wanted.. they have brought up a scenario that makes it highly unlikely that she is in Russia.. why would she be looking for local romance the day she was fleeing to Russia ??
Not to knock your point.. there are a lot of combinations of hardware you can make.. but the reality is, that there is a lesser number of combinations of hardware that actually interacts with the OS.. For example, in all those 28 motherboards how many different chipsets are there ? how many different Bios ? how many different types of onboard sound and video chips ? If you look at each motherboard I am sure you will find many with the exact same chipset, sound, video, and bios combination.
I doubt the different processors, most of which the only difference is speed, have much to do with anything.. now the add on cards like sound and especially graphics cards are probably the biggest source of headaches.(graphics cards have always been a problem)
Drives, writers, usb.. all should be based on standards.. don't see a problem there. I am sure there may be some oddballs, but for the most part they follow standards.
The point is, there is a considerable amount of combinations, but a lesser amount of pieces of them that you need to write code to intereact with.. the fact that a certain combination of motherboard and say ram, may be unstable, has nothing to do with the OS, but more to do with crappy hardware.
Let's examine that.. The Gimp tool box window File menu has no options for save, or save as.. The opened file window does... why ?
Well because this lets you open multiple files for editing with only one toolbox.. and guess what.. when you make a change, and want to save it.. you know exactly which file is being saved !.,, you know, there are times when you are working with multiple files and don want to save the changes on all of them... does it make sense to you now ?
There is another option.. Liquid coffee concentrate (it's refrigerated). It's is mixed with the hot water as it goes into the cup. You have probably had it many times in resturants and never knew it. Wasted coffee = 0
This is what I mean.. I guess a little confusing, but yes I am meaning running lilo, that uses a configuration file to configure the loader (I guess also called lilo) usually in the MBR. (although can be located elsewhere, which is what started this)
How would you run the bootloader again on an already booted system as a user ?
I can find no other place where it is said this is possible.. perhaps if permissions were changed on the installed version, but then I don't know if the code for Lilo checks for root.. even rescue disks that have Lilo give you root access so you can make the changes.. and here we are talking physical access to get root.. I suppose i could download a copy of Lilo and change permissions to see if it let me run it as a user.. hmmm..
In order to run lilo, you need to be root.. correct ?
so although you might be able to install it in some sector (giving you the benifit),... how are you going to run it without being root ?
If you were just explaining the flexibility of where Lilo can be installed, I understand that.. but it kind of seems you implied that a malware script could be made to just willy nilly install and run lilo.. maybe it can, but I'd have to have more proof.
I think he was late for the plane anyway.. Of course in his mind it's someone else's fault.
I would also point out, that when buying materials for construction, you get what you pay for.. Not sure but I think he was alluding to the bullet basically ricocheting inside the body.. actually makes it more deadly not less IMO
Some examples ?
