    The major downside to this, as I see it, would be that it places a signifigant burden on the indexing server, as now it not only has to determine who is sharing what, but the credibility and anonymous source of that credibility for each of the millions of unique files on the service.
    You can have ranking and anonimity without burden on any indexing server (you can even don't have such a server). Check GNUnet on that...

    Isn't there a better use of University research time than wasting it on programs attempting to make it easier to perform illegal acts?
    Their research isn't about making easier to perform illegal acts, is about solving the spam problem on Gnutella.

    Exactly... The real sollution is to use one of those p2p networks that has already a reputation system embeeded into it, that doesn't rely on the reports but on the network itself. Check GNUnet, for instance.

    There are MUD derivatives without the RP'ing part... Check out for talkers, for instance.

    Yes, but there are a lot of Talker bases, avoiding the pain to get some MUSH code and turning it into a talker...

    On talkers, the most popular and successful is Enchantment Under the Sea (EUTS).

    Well, you can have the "simple" (user-friendly) version of MUSH'es: Talkers. I run a talker and am addicted to talkers since 1998: they give a social and community experience that any MMORPG made me feel... at least yet. Maybe when we get MMO without RPG things will change...

    That doesn't happen. I'm a slashdotter for some time, I get several times metamod points and allways use them, and then, sometimes, mod points appear. I'm not the kind of user that posts too much or that shows what's his OS/religion/etc, so don't blame that to happen. Thing is, with so many users, the probability of having mod points is diminishing...

    1) Non-administrator OS X users have access that's much closer to typical Unix root than to a typical Unix user.
    Yes, in MacOS X (which I doesn't have but use in several clients and friends computers) an user can't do a security update but they can erase a partition. Wow, now THAT's security! :-P

    Since 3.8.2 the hd installer has changed. I haven't tried myself but it's said to be really better...

    The best way is really try to avoid that Windows App. Emulation works (sometimes) but it's a fix, not a sollution. If you're to stick with a good Linux-based solution, now it's the time.

    Isn't there another solution besides that Windows Application that does the same thing?

    Yeah sure...

    One of the reasons IE is very used is exactly because many webpages can't be viewed by any other browser.

    Do you really believe that M$ would let that advantage go away, just for the sake of humanity?
