  1. These Aren't Pranks on Jail Sentence For Popular YouTube Pranksters (bbc.com) · · Score: 1

Things these guys do aren't pranks. They seem to get a rise out of scaring people while filming. I bet in most of their videos they don't even stop after the prank is finished and tell the people that they are "pranking" that it is indeed a "prank". Look at the just for laughs pranks, they are more inline with what a prank should be. Pull a joke or a fast one on someone and when your done tell the person and have a good laugh with them about it. Not saying that the Just for laughs pranks all go well and likely not everyone they prank thinks it's as funny as they do. But at least they don't pretend to kidnap or pretend to commit armed robbery, which would generally scare or induce a response from people that is negative.

  2. it saddens me how many times i have argued this point with my parents. earliest memory of it was in grade 8, most recent was about 5 months ago when i tried to warn them about installing a cloud based video system into their house. At least i got to use the line: "what if there is somebody snooping on the non encrypted feed to your house and you guys are fucking in the living room". Sadly being former flower children they got turned on and promptly told me they had something important to attend to and made me leave.

In my mind, the next logical step for me would be start writing letters to my state rep and letters to the FCC. Also, i would consult a lawyer and see if there is anything that i could do legaly to track the spoofers, ie: get nasty with the phone company or request phone bills from the people that are calling her and cross check them (using her number as a reference) and see if there is a way for the phone company to track who is really making the calls. I am not sure if there really is that much you could do with a lawyer, but in any case the lawyer will atleast inform you of your rights in this situation. That little bit of information might lead to the proper solution. Here in Canada, we don't have people spoofing caller id's with other people's phone numbers yet (or atleast i haven't heard of it yet), however telemarketers do often replace their numbers with something like 000-000-0000.I often get phone calls like that.

  7. Re:A simple suggestion on Keeping Customer From Accessing My Database? · · Score: 1

Having experience with managing a small enterprise level database, i can understand that many admins wouldn't allow (or want to) customer access to a mission critical database. With the wrong query they can really ruin a good day. That being said, the database is your company's asset, and with the proper precautions can be turned into a money generating asset. Since it's your asset, you dictate the terms on which customers access your data. You can require that the customer first submits the sql query that they wish to run to the database admin. You can also tell them who ever is writing the querys has to be certified by your company and trained. Keep in mind, you can charge for the extra certification and train that the customers employees would need, and charge on a monthly basis for database access. People will pay top dollar for top quality service and goods, people for some reason sometimes don't realize what the market is willing to pay. The fact is, with scheduled backups (remote and onsite) any customer damage could be undone and your customer contracts could have a clause in them that gives your company the right to sue for lost time and money.

To bad, cause a Canadian Judge ruled that file sharing isn't illegal in Canada. See http://news.com.com/2100-1027_3-5182641.html for more information. The greed induced coma that record and movie studio's are in now will successfully ruin (read: has ruined) the industry. I personally don't go to the movie theaters anymore because of the following reasons:

    1) I don't enjoy paying more than $10 so see a movie, and lets face it, i am too lazy to go out and get a movie rental card :-P
    2) I get a far better movie experience at home anyways, i have better sound/images and no jack ass sitting in front of me talking about what he thinks is going to happen in the movie next.
    3) Most of the movies that come out today are crap. Also a great deal of them are ether remakes of old movies, or sequels. I would rather watch the original version of the movie an certainly not the 3rd,4th or 5th sequels of the movie.

Maybe if the industry would actually create something good, instead of shoving more of the same tired crap down peoples necks. I am so tired of seeing some pop culture icon (like jessica simpson, etc..) get a movie part. They aren't real actors. I don't find their lack of intellgence funny or cute. All they do is re-enforce the image that women should act stupid because it's cute.

It's the same with the music industry. They have new bands every few months now, and rarely are they any good....just more of the same pop culture or indy music.

As a consumer i have a choice. I choose to not spend money on crap. If i can get free crap and have a better experience in my own home, why wouldn't i take advantage of it? Maybe it's time to change the way you do business and actually create a model that inpires trust from the customer, in a way that will make them feel comfortable about buying something of yours and make them feel like they are getting something for that money.

I tend to dissagree. The company i work for is currently using Office 2003. I use Openoffice because my desktop is linux based (i am the only linux user in the Company) and have no problems doing excel, word or any other operation that the bosses ask for on a daily bases. Quite often they will ask me to make a excel formula (last week i had to do one for payroll deductions) that is more advanced than the regular users can handle. Some of the formulas that i have created in the past are 5-6 lines long and have the max number of nested IF statments (MS office only allows 7 nested IF statments) and other fun stuff in em. I have never had a problem converting a document (excel, word, etc...) to work on, and i have never had a problem with the other users reading my work.

It's not just the newest versions of Open Office that work ether, i have been in a full linux envrionment for 3+ years now (ever since Service Pack 2 came out and messed my Windows XP install), all the while using Open Office on linux.

Now, some stuff like access (the vb side of it) i can't do under linux, but for that i use a virtual computer (vmware server) or a spare desktop that we have lying around in the back, however i rarly have a situation with access...and i have never had to do anything for excel or word under MS office other than access stuff.
