A taxi cab has to take you "south of the river" on request, lest they lose their licence. I've never had a problem with it when travelling in London, but don't get me started on mini-cabs...
My handwriting is even worse, but the recogniser does an unbelievably good job of reading it. It's funny to look at people's faces when the computer converts what they've just written (and I can't even read) with 100% accuracy.
Kinda depends what you want to do, doesn't it? I'm working on a Computer Science-Physics degree at Leeds University with the intention of becoming an airline pilot.
I think a lot of people run into problems because they expect to leap into the top job after leaving university. That might have been the case once, but I don't think it is now. I know a few people who left Uni and did indeed take jobs shelf-stacking or working in call centres.
I mean, I know this is Slashdot, but please tell me that you can bear to be without the internet for 12 hours?
You could have gone outside (yeah, sunlight won't actually melt you) or read a book, or in the worst case, you must have saved some porn on the laptop...:P
I don't know which version of Office he used, but it must have been prior to XP, as that didn't need the computer restarting. Nor did Office 2003. Looks like he's making it up as he goes along.
It needs Python 2.2, and I only have 1.5 running. Unfortuately, so many things depend on it (*cough* Ensim *cough*) that attempting to upgrade is a death wish.
Well, to be fair, the electric car will never work commercially anyway. What happens in winter when you decide to turn the heater on? That's only another 2000W you're pulling from the batteries.
How about when half the country comes home from work and plugs their cars in to charge up? You already have problems with brown-outs, this would collapse your grid entirely. Same in any other country.
Yeah, it surprised me too. I thought I'd be limited to 512kbps max. Mind you, the phone company did lay brand new cable prior to the ADSL connection so that might have something to do with it.
Remember, ADSL is not limited by distance, it's limited by the attenuation on the line.
I live six miles away from my exchange and my phone line supports 2mbit ADSL easily. All the distance limits were removed in the UK (why not the US too?) some time ago so all internet connections can go as high as a line test says they'll go.
While my karma plummits further, I might go so far as to say that we have a few Euro-philic moderators around today.

In addition, the EU constitution is 400 pages long. Wouldn't be so bad if it was 10-20 pages, but 400 lets them stuff in things we don't want.
There's an exclusive clause in the constitution that grants politicians the right to buy tax free cars. You really think people are going to vote for something like that?
If I was responsible for leading development on Linux kernels, it would only take a few million bucks for me to sneak in something useful to America.
Besides, if China's that pathetically paranoid then they probably deserve to have their computers looked into from the outside. What could possibly be so important they want to hide it?
Besides, knowing MS and networking, it won't work anyway - ever tried to Remote Desktop into another machine over the net when machine in question is behind a router?
And Slashdot has had pop-ups since when, exactly?

Following the link in the story leads me to a page that tries to install an ActiveX control on my computer, apparently required for "Website Access".
The page won't even display for me in IE unless I agree to install the spyware / adware on my PC.
Gee, thanks, Slashdot, do your best to support these fucking inbreds. *Fires up FireFox to read the site anyway.*

So you were hosting a website[s] on a 1.5mbps DSL line? Pull the other one.

I'd be more worried that he seemed to be seriously excited about a red-eye removal tool.
No, in Communist China, WEBSITES register YOU.
Sadly, that's probably a little too close to the truth to be funny.
Yeah, the keys are really close together. Anyone could make that mistake.
Tell me more! I looked into it briefly this afternoon, but most forum threads started about it were left unanswered.
Not knowing Python (I got taught Java at university) I never really payed much attention to it.

Will wait until I get my new server.

I think CRTs will be making a comeback - after all, Voyager was stuffed full of them...

Actually, I think the fan probably crushed his motherboard. :-)
So, how long before we have a unit of mMM?
:-)
Mmm... M&Ms... sorry, got distracted.
Excuse me? It is in the UK! And there was me thinking it was just England...

You know one thing for certain after watching the ending of the movie where the robots have to touch each other...
:)
Bluetooth is never going to be a success.
Yeah, but I'd have a few million bucks, so it wouldn't really matter, would it? ;)
