  1. Control your users and data on The Downide of Your ISP Turning to Gmail · · Score: 1

For an ISP, it's important to retain your customers and provide them a reliable email-service and Webmail interface.

Just passing on this critical part of an ISP to a big player like google, waters down your ISP offerings and you loose control over your customers, the ability to charge for added services, and not to mention the security.

Do you really trust moving all your customer emails to google? When customer xyz calls up about their email, do you really want to tell them to call google because as the ISP you have no control?

Just as Google sees the value in retaining customers, email, data, power, so should you as an ISP.

We develop Email-server & Webmail solutions based on Linux called @Mail, and have a lot of experience consulting ISP's in this area.

  2. Don't copy - innovate!! on Mozilla and Google — Exchange Killers At Last? · · Score: 2, Insightful

OK, so there is a lot of talk about creating an Exchange clone, an alternative, and most solutions offering a Linux backend that still allows users to use Outlook and synchronize with MS products.

Isn't this just copying and not creating and real value to innovate? Directly creating a Linux Exchange clone that can talk with Outlook, doesn't that just further strengthen the cause to use MS products for the end-user?

The Linux community should embrace a standard compliant Group Calendar, Addressbook, and Mail - This can be provided completely Web-based without the need for a fat client, especially end users with Outlook. Users can access the product using Firefox, Safari of IE, cross-platform.

Food for thought, embrace a new protocol/product that can offer the features Exchange does, but in a radically new way, without the need to support 'Outlook'

One product that has this vision is @Mail - Keep an eye on the project

  3. Re:Alternative open-source solution on Mozilla and Google — Exchange Killers At Last? · · Score: 1

Another good solution to an Exchange alternative is @Mail - http://atmail.com/ - Web-based Exchanged. They way I see it, the desktop-app is no longer really needed for Email. Webmail will overtake the local client in the future, and Web-based alternatives to Exchange will be the solid alternative.

  4. Gmail/Yahoo alternative on your own server? on Yahoo! Mail Beta Goes Public · · Score: 1

So what about a decent Gmail/Yahoo alternative for your own server that you can download/install and control?

Personally I don't feel easy storing any private messages on Gmail, aka we own your email, cough cough, owned and controlled by other interests ;-) Sure we do not evil, ahuh ....

So what's out there you can download/install and own on your server? @Mail is a good alternative, Zimbra is pretty bloated and more focused to the bigger corps/exchange clone, Roundcube is pretty simple, and for IMP/Squirrelmail, you have got to be joking.

We want to create an open-source alternative to Gmail that is done right, without the bloat, and something you can control on your own Linux boxen. Anyone interested to assist?

  5. Another good Ajax Webmail on Forbes Reviews AJAX Apps for Small Businesses · · Score: 2, Interesting

No mention of @Mail which offers Ajax email, and is a download product rather then online service like the ones listed in the Forbes article. I think the Forbes article is pretty light/fluffy, but it is for their target audience anyway ....

Umm, shouldn't this be called XULwrite?

Seems like more XUL is used from the Mozilla engine then any 'Ajax'. Shame, I was looking forward to see something a tad better ;-)

IMHO a better example that uses XUL is @Mail - http://demo.atmail.com/ - It contains some good examples of mixing Ajax & XUL together.

Tabs for viewing email-messages is nothing new.

@Mail , a WebMail application that is built using XUL ( the same UI engine Thunderbird uses ) has had this feature for nearly 8 months.

Take a look at: http://atmail.com/images/tabs.gif for an example - Improved with the close button and navigation at the bottom, and nicer CSS

See an example online - http://demo.atmail.com/ under Firefox, IMHO this is better then Thunderbirds implementation.

IMHO, @Mail has undergone many more revisions, has commercial support, and have a better WebMail interface then Zimbra.
But on the flip side, great to see some competition to Exchange!
BTW - Why is Ajax the next 'DHTML' hype ... i mean, it's nothing new, just another way to look @ JS

IMHO there is a much better WebMail application called @Mail at http://atmail.com/ - Beats the pants off Y!'s attempt of a desktop WebMail application, it also have a native XUL/Firefox interface that kicks over Gmail's bland GUI.

Monsanto are responsible for most of the GE crops in the world. According to the company, the 'own' the patent/property of creating a seed with a GE strain ( e.g wheat, canola, etc ). In summary the world has forever reused seeds for next crops, now Monsanto wants farmers to pay each year for seed, so they reap even more profits. A company like this is raping the very essence of the bio-chain, with their army of lawyers at side to sue third-world countries and traditional farmers. With the WTO on side, people need to stand up to Monsanto and say NO! That means not buying GE food, supporting local farmers, and eating ORGANIC foods.
