Oh yeah and videoplus/VCR+ too. If fact people giving their techhie kids clear instructions on what to tape, for when they go on holidays have also beaten you too it.
What's that you say? It uses a computer?! Oh well in that case of course you can patent it. Don't forget to file a patent for "Displaying images using a computer controlled device" and "Use of a software controlled device to add two numbers"
Remember here at the US Patent office the old dirty word is Common Sence.
We need a new protocol for the sending and recieving of email. SMPT is far too trusting. It's innocence has been well and truely lost.
How about a protocol where a user continuously posts "problems", programs to be run, in his email box. When anyone wants to send him a mail they have to download one of these programs, run it, and return the solution. Check if 2^12345 - 1 is prime maybe? Or just run any old compiled program, that takes "time" that is. Maybe 100000 CPU cycles.
Spammers CPUs would quickly melt, but the rest of us would be fine. I think Bill gates came up with this idea already so I guess MS have alreqady got the patent.
Why couldn't he just write a three page proof with no rambling.
Talk is cheap, but maths sticks!
P.S.
I wonder will this have much of an impact on RSA encryption?
Well at least by proxy. Coperate reps bribe/dine/blackmail/makeloveto ministers/senators/congressmen/presidents/MEPs/Med iaBosses and the rest of us end up losing what little rights we have.
WIPO is a forum set up by the powerful for the powerful. An unelected body whose job it is to increase the powers of producers and reduce the rights of consumers.
I'm sick of this rubbish. Big business getting laws passed so that if we want to even glance at a film we must pay money each and every time. what's next? CD's with ongoing fees? DVD's that self destruct? MP3s with encryption?
This kind of thing is in fact older than ipods OR mp3(Wow! Pre 2.0 kernel). You can listen to the sounds of many of the earths electro-magnetic field phenomena here
. In REAL TIME!!! OMG!!
For years many industries have been moving factories and jobs to other countries, so it's unsurprizing that those countries have increased their technical knowhow.
I think this is more a case of the rest of the world getter smarter rather that americans getting dumber
"Oh. Right. People don't use all that space on their players so lets release inferior products for the same price! More cash for all!! Hehehe"
Had it been left up to the tranditional personal stero makers, I think they would have release a HDD based product that could hold 10, 20 CDs max so that people wouldn't abandon CDs. Apple gave people more space than they had ever dreamed of in one little gadget.Because apple didn't have a vested interest in CDs they release a product that essentially made them obselete. Sony for example would NEVER have done this. It would have effected their CD sales.
I think this will lead to a glut of about 1GB sized iPodlets pushed as an alternative to the admittedly pricy ipod, by companies who, because they're also in the record business, don't really want us using compressed music anyway.
Begs the question. Will that drive apple out of the music player business? Recall, the mere 4GB mini has sold like hot cakes.
I expect the Sony HardDiskman to arrive soon..... With over 15 hours!!! of playback!!
They will of course be useless as portable hard drives. IMO the handiest extra of the ipod.
WOW!! 6 years ago Google was an ity bity startup in someones garage. A testimony to the American Dream or a fine example of monopoly at work? [OK there not 100%, but neither is MS]
Paranoia check? How much of that 4+ petabytes is devoted to YOU?:E
Programmers are a dime a dozen. Helpdesk is point and click. Sql Server types are removing the need for database admins and any IT skill that isn't oversupplied is outsourced to India, where everyone is better than us anyway.
There is no more money in IT Office work.
Go solo. Set up your own company if you want to see more than 30k and yet another UAT form.
Essentially Google have opened the floodgates.
The limits on Hotmail and Yahoo were pretty miserly considering the plummeting costs of storage. You can get USB memory keys with more space that email accounts you have to pay for.
Now that Google are giving away a gig, others will have to follow. Maybe you'll pay, maybe you won't, but at least you'll be paying for a reasonable amount of space for this hour and age.
P.S. just because they're not google doesn't mean they're not watching you.....
Sorry guys. Looks like Sky+ beat you to it.

I can just imagine this....
[BG sitting in Massive Satin Bed. Linus standing nervously near the door]
BG: Linus... Come to bed....
Linus: No!
BG: Come to bed Linus.....
Linus: I Won't!!
BG: I'll show you the Windows source code...
Linus: Oh God.....
Lets face it. The Boom is over.

We should have taken business courses
It might be possible to make a lossy D storage format as well.
Instead of storing the hundreds of points that make up a surface the program could instead interpolate an approximate formula for that surface.
Not only would this leada to compression of the file, it could also lead to higher resolutions without larger filesizes.
All the end user would have to do is increas the size of his mesh when he draws the surface function.
I think it could work. Anything to avoid all these ad hoc file formats for 3D models. Trouble is MS might EEE it.
