My 486 was a 486SX/25 with 4MB RAM 170MB Conner HDD, later upgraded to 8MB with a 2x CD-ROM drive for the small fortune of just over $1,000 (AU).
Back then, incremental versions of Microsoft products provided actual functionality. Memmaker (bundled with MS-DOS 6.0+) was a godsend for anyone who had sat down trying "loadhigh" (autoexec.bat) "devicehigh" (config.sys) and the ordering of drivers to get more than 600KB of conventional memory free.
Games back then had more depth and bredth - I was a big fan of the Sierra/Dynamix series - Kings Quest 5, 6 and 7, Space Quest, Leisure Suit Larry 6, Quest for Glory 3 and 4, Police Quest 3 were among the games I spent too much of my childhood playing:-)
As a side-note, I remember Kings Quest 6 in particular came in a 12 or 13 (I think) disk set. Included was a note saying that in order to hear the Theme Song (Girl in the Tower), I would have to call a radio station in the USA and request it. For an 11 year old Australian, that bummed me out!
Ahh.. I don't know where it is anymore, but that box se.. oh crap. I left it in the crawlspace in the roof of my old house. C'est la vie.
I think that was the only Adelaide-built car to make it to the 'states.
Incidentally, I think the wide roads are a perception of how low the camera is to the ground.
As an Australian (living in Brisbane), I have also spent about a year in the US, and have travelled a lot of the Interstate network between Los Angeles and the San Ysidro border.
I-5 between Los Angeles and the CA 78/I-5 merge I-15 between Escondido and Temecula I-405 (San Diego Fwy) between LA and San Diego I-805 (I think) from San Diego to the Tijuana border.
The US Interstate system is not much different from the M-1 between Brisbane and the Gold Coast, lane widths are about the same. Actually, I have webcam-hooked-to-laptop footage of Gold Coast to Brisbane, but it's too crappy to put online.
As for Microsoft being cool? Yep, it's called MSN Messenger, and if any computer doesn't have it, it's NOT cool. *cough* *barf*
Don't believe me? Remove MSN Messenger from an average teenager's Internet-Connected PC and wait for them to scream bloody murder. Oh, and download it again.
QUT itself (gardent point campus) just rolled out it's own WiFi solution (bout time, guys).
I believe it is based on bluesocket and PPTP VPNs instead of that bullshit WEP rubbish...
I wonder if they've been "experimenting" with this new jamming technique?
Also, It's not always raining there (I'm from Brisbane, QLD and I go to this university - so there you go).
The number of people who would lose jobs that depend on copyright, patent and trademarks is incredible... so what's so bad about a crapload of IP lawyers having a hard time?:-)
(as for the true creative people, yes, I can see how it would effect them)
Also another easy way to do this
Grab an old Quantum drive (any drive will do, but this is the way I did it) and insert it into a computer with an AT PSU.
(The drive I used was an 85 Megabyte drive - yes, old, made by Quantum, IDE interface in a 386/25)
Now, open the lid, remove the hdd screws, and put ones that are TOO LONG in place.
Now screw it in really, really tight. Make sure to take extra care to really really crunch the PCB on the buttom of the drive with that extra long screw. Just crunch it really good.
Now, close the system and power it on.
In my case, BOTH 85MB drives PCB's caught fire as the screws has created a high resistance short between the PCB and the case. The amount of smoke that poured out the back of the AT PSU was nothing short of staggering, and boy did it reek.
I scrambled to open the case to find the flames just flickering out of their own accord as I lifted the lid. Quite impressive, I wish I had taken some photos now:(.
Oh well..
Have you ever bought or rented a tape that wasn't quite right? It may have been a pirate copy - an illegal, and inferior copy for which you paid good money.
Pirate tapes robs artists and studios of their rightful income, and add to the cost of a video to the consumer.
Pirate tapes are recognizable by poorly presented or photocopied jackets, poor sound and/or picture quality. The lack of censor and other labels on the face and spine of the tape, and the absence of warnings, such as these at the beginning of the tape presentation.
If you believe you have bought or rented a tape which you believe is not the genuine article, please call this toll-free number for assistance, or write to us. The Australasian Film and Video Securities Office, Post Office box xxx Mona Vale, NSW, 2103.
Video piracy is a major problem in Australia. Please help us stop it.
They did a really good job of it too, even if you fast-forwarded it, you would get on your screen in large letters, "HAVE YOU GOT WHAT YOU PAID FOR" each word about 1-1.5 seconds on your screen depending on the speed of your f-fwd on the vcr!
And no, I haven't watched any VHS recently. The warning was *THAT* obnoxious. And the irony is that the studio tapes themselves had poor quality and poor picture, I guess that comes from being rentals. *sigh*
I think they were more fun.
:-)

Maybe I'll re-do it one day
