The article does not say Computer Science majors are not employable because CS majors are stupid. The article says the UNEMPLOYMENT RATE for CS majors is the highest among most majors. Which means CS majors are having a tough time finding jobs which indicates there isn't a demand for CS majors!!
Did you notice Engineering came in 3rd at 13%. Are you saying more and more people who don't know anything about engineering are enrolling in engineering programs?
They are not "least employable." That's the wrong title for the Slashdot summary. The article is talking about unemployment rate for new graduates based on subject area.
TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS.
Engineering is up there too (13% compared to 17% for Computer Science)! Does that mean engineers are not employable? No. It means there is a saturation of engineers and computer science majors. This happens all the time. There is not always a demand for a certain major.
Microsoft is still thinking PC. They push PC, letting other markets slip away.
Latest commercial for Windows 7 show some schmuck using his laptop to stream internet vids to his TV. Ummm...how very '90s. Ever here of networked TVs? You know TVs that can be connected to your network and they go out to YouTube or Netflix and grab content.....
Also the salient point is "in which it has no physical presence." Where they do have a physical presence they support public services.
Amazon is not alone in the position. So let's stop pretending that it's only Amazon that does not what to pay an Internet tax, which is what we are talking about.
Wow, way to ignore what has been happening in the Gulf for the past 64 days!
Do you also want to ignore the significant impact on the Gulf economy do to the oil spill?? The impact is not a one-time stoppage of work. All these industries that rely on the Gulf, tourism, fishing, are impacted by this. They are essentially out of business. This impact will last for years!! A moratorium is temporary and will be lifted. Not too mention BP has setup a fund to pay out of work oil workers.
Do you get the picture?
FYI deep water wells take YEARS not days to drill. So your ONSHORE analogy is not valid. You'd think you'd know that if you had paid attention to the news.
"That said, if you are doing statistical analysis, engineering, graphic design, programming (and compiling), and a number of other jobs, then you should ABSOLUTELY be on a very aggressive upgrade schedule."
If you had read the previous posts, you would understand why that argument holds no water. If you bothered to do a cost benefit analysis, efficiency gains (if any), do not pay for the cost of buying new computers, buying new software, retraining personnel, and re-writing applications. Given your scenario of an aggressive upgrade schedule, you would NEVER realize any savings.
Welcome to the real world where business doesn't have the resources to waste on needless upgrades.
"Staying where you are only makes sense if you are doing mostly word processing."
You are an utter moron if you think that's the only reason.
Yeah the jackass analyst assumes business run like the home user...business don't have the time and money to spend frivolously upgrading software and hardware.
FYI..since when did we get on this upgrade kick? Weren't computers suppose to last?? Weren't you suppose to upgrade when you needed to upgrade not because some company puts out some shiny new toy? Seriously, people keep cars longer than computers...
Yeah try it with SHAREPOINT! Everytime they apply a critical update or software patch we have to check all our apps to see if something broke. That's a real pain!!
Yeah that's right because noone could honestly foresee trouble with this well....moron.
No other approach would have stopped the oil leak. Short of having already drilled a relief - which is required in Canada I might add - the top kill was the next best effort.
BP waited weeks pissing around, engaging in PR damage control instead of addressing the actual problem. Using toxic dispersant which do nothing and make it harder to collect the oil using oil tankers which can suck up an oil slick - which they didn't do!!
The top kill is a TEMPORARY fix until the relief well is completed. The relief well was began shortly after the leak started. It takes MONTHS to drill and is the only PERMANENT fix. It will be completed sometime around August.
"The value of clothing drops dramatically within 3 months because fashions are seasonal. So if you can replicate it after 1 year, no one cares. This is not true of software, movies, music, etc. A lot of IP retains its value for decades or longer."
Are you intentionally dim? Software loses value as soon as the next version is available and/or support is not longer available. Movies? Yeah that's why Walmart has a $5 bin full of movies (DVDs).
Your argument holds no weight. The key point is whether or not you can profitable without copyright or IP protection. The fashion industry has proven you can.
In case you were not aware, PCs and Microsoft exist today because a few companies infringed on IBM's design allowing hardware manufacturers to make IBM PC knock-offs. IBM was unable to win court cases to stop this and the PC industry was born.
Exactly! Hey HP, so then why did you reduce the amount in ink cartridges AND jack up the price????? If ink truly costs more than the existing cartridges should have just seen a price increase, not a quantity decrease AND price INCREASE. douche bags.
Hey jackass read the freakin' article. The doctor created the technique used to harvest the stem cells. It's that technique the other company claims to have patented. So the doctor cannot use the very technique he created!
Do you get the picture moron!
From the article: "Schwartz said his nonprofit hospital has no intention of commercializing its discoveries or stealing profits from StemCells."
So again, what's wrong with that. The greedy SOB StemCells - nice name ass-holes - wants to stop people from saving lives because it will cut into their bottom line.
Which doesn't speak to the employ-ability of graduates but rather whether or not they can find work. Hence the term, unemployment rate.
Critical thinking skills are pretty low around here. Course it would help of people read the damn article instead of shooting off their mouth.
RTFA you moron.

Seriously, you should not be a lecturer.

Seriously, so far behind the times.
Give it up Florian, you have been measure and found wanting.
IBM has done nothing wrong.

Good grief, read the earlier posts before commenting. Your lack of knowledge adds nothing to the discourse.
Again read this: http://www.groklaw.net/articlebasic.php?story=20100408153953613

Flash has already been displaced on the mobile platform by it's non-existence.
Who the hell uses Java Applets anymore? Servlets, sure.
You are well behind the times.

Damn fine post. Hopefully Google reads it.

October 25, 2001...yeah really...poster needs to check calendar.
FYI, not all plastics are bad...
Moron.
You fail to understand that BP has been doing major spin control since day one. Even now BP controls who has access to the beach cleanup.
moron.
No they weren't. It took them days to admit they actually had a problem on their hands.

These medical patents need to go.
Yeah talk to me the next time you pass your school budget and you school taxes go up about how government consumes 1/4 our economy.
Geniuses like you complain about government but when it comes time to do something, like school taxes, you are MIA.
Idiot.
