    Bad assumption. I'll wager, based on experience of the McClellan AFB runway (used to land *any* plane in the USAF till it was decom'd in the 90's), the runway is likely closer to 12 feet thick (concrete and rebar only), and up to 20 feet when you figure in the foundation strata under the concrete.

    Proof of concept, when I worked in retail I could alt-tab between notepad and the POS app (how's that for secure?)
    No-one thinks twice of a clerk re-swiping a card after hitting a couple keys on the keyboard. To boot the keyboard layout was such that a computer "pro" would likely never have noticed I hit alt-tab because the keymap was all wacky.

    I never did anything with the info, never saved it to disk. Simply did it to prove to the DM that the system we were using was flawed and we should call the vendor.

    Turns out the reason we never fixed it was that we were using a single 10 seat licence for a company of approx 400 stores.....

    Piracy@example.com here I come! (I hated that company anyway).

    It is important to note that tape is less reliable than HDD at a consumer level. If you only back up your data (not media) then the web solution means that you are likely to pay only ~$1.80/year for offsite storage of your truely important data (scans of marrige/birth certs, passport, SS card, masters thesis, etc.)

    Really though, there are alrealy analogues to this in the real auction world, so couldn't that be considered prior art? I mean the method can be patentable I suppose, but the concept has been around forever in farm auctions:
    Bid on equipment at the auction, or "buy it now" by paying the asset holder (the bank) the retail value.

    really? so they use a single wire then?
    I know you were implicating the lack of a foil wrap around the braid, but technically the braid is still a shield.
    Compare that to the solid silver stranded core and silver clad copper braid, with 3 foil wraps that I use in some of my instrumentation and it might as well be unsheilded.

    *not really, my platform is actually "constitutional fundamentalist", though shooting the corrupt politicians is a tempting idea to submit as the new national past time.

    A much safer method would be to use an app like http://www.truecrypt.org/ with the hidden volume. The keys to the primary volume can be given away to the company and can contain company confidential docks, while your data is on the hidden volume. That is what I do.

    UC Santa Cruz IIRC. He bequethed his literary work to the library. Which means a film would be excellent as (assuming is has a good director and cast and budget) it's a great story and the money would not go to waste.

    My vote would be BSD, mostly because of the licence. IF some sub assy vendor wants to keep part or all of their source secret *cough* ATI *cough* Intel then there is no issue with that. Conversly Dell can push for as much openness as possible and make a killing. Heck I would still pay the same price as for a Windows maching (mostly because it has an OS that works already on it).

    I am the draconian net admin asshole for a lab at my company.
    All ports are labelled in my lab, isolated, production, phone. Color coded too (isolated is a yellow label). When I leave my lab and need connectivity (and can't get the campus WiFi) I sometimes have to take the approach:
    1) jack in and look for link
    2) dhcp request / view config / determine if the network is a corp. or lab connection
    3) go back to 1 till I find a corp drop.

    really pisses me off...

    Which results in frustration for the rest of us that want to change things, but can not due to the voter apathy. Sucks, really. If it wasn't for the rather strong family ties the wife and I have here, we'd likely move to our neighbor in the north.

    For this to happen it must be in the right order:

    1) OSS proponent founds business
    2) business grows and stayes with OSS
    3) Lower expense in IT infrastructure
    4) 1/profit!

    Really though, the hard part is winning over an existing business. Starting up with OSS would be magnatudes easier than converting.

    9001 really only means you follow your own guidelines. so if you don't have a guideline for data retention or tracking you're fine. Stupid, but fine.
