  1. Re:It's necessary, but not required on IT Job Without a Degree? · · Score: 1

Sorry, but you've ever met the SA's or help desk personnel I work with. The majority of them suck. The reason? They have no critical thinking skills. They don't know how to solve problems, or think outside the normal workflow routines. The reason is because they all have certs instead of degrees. Had they gone to college, they would have skills like critical thinking, leadership, and the ability to form complete sentences. Instead, my development team and I must pick up their slack, and it's not fun. Do yourself a favor and go to college. No matter how overpriced it is, you'll be better off in life with it than without it.

verizon communications is the single largest builder and owner of fiber in the entire country. however, they are forced by the government to operate at a loss. since they are considered "communications", they are required to lease out their lines to other providers, wheras cable companies are not required to do so. part of the cost is absorbed by the small amount of money they receive in federal funding, but since the USF is no longer available (of which they only got a tiny portion), the best thing to do would be to silently replace the fee. this way the customer pays no more than they used to (i believe a little less in this case), and they get more money to build and maintain all the fiber that their customers and partners use. and still, they operate at a loss. i'm not against the government heavily regulating them. while it's a shame they've been in the red for so long, i firmly believe commodities like communication infrastructure needs to be regulated. the USF was removed to protect consumers, and verizon added the fee to protect themselves as well as their customers, which they have a right to do.

the problem with a line-in is the D/A conversion. your volume will always have some sort of hiss to it. put the mp3 player up too loud and it'll crackle. Too low, and you'll get nothing but hiss. Which is why I went with the Dension IceLink for my ipod. It stands in line with my monsoon stereo and acts like a CD changer. The signal is straight digital to the stereo. The only volume to worry about is on the stereo, and all the play controls are on the stereo as well.

  8. when will people stop confusing the two verizons? on Verizon Pulling Plug on Free Wi-Fi in NYC · · Score: 2, Informative

Is it just a coincidence Verizon is expanding its EV-DO in New York at the same time?

I'm sorry, but when did verizon communications become verizon wireless? VZW is not Verizon Communications, and EvDO is a completely different technology than Wi-Fi. If you honestly think verizon is pulling the plug on free wi-fi (which btw, is only free for verizon online customers) and replacing it with another company's $80 wireless data service, you'll need to educate yourself a little. Call me crazy, but it just doesn't seem like a good way to push customers along. The real reason is that no one actually cared about the hotspots. who's gonna stand next to a phone booth to use wi-fi? I believe I'm the only one. And the only reason I used it was because I was sitting in my car waiting for the street-cleaning nazis. Now I live in new jersey, get cable, and have EvDO. Now get out there and start buying EvDO, it's awesome.

ASCAP, SESAC, and BMI (of which I am an affiliate) don't pay most of their artists. Their collection scheme is somewhat misleading. For the most part, they only pay artists that gross over a certain amount, that make a certain amount of money on tour, sell a certain number of records, and have a significant amount of airplay. So basically only Britney Spears gets paid, and the millions of artists that are touring and sell a small number of records through distribution often never see the money. I know I never have.
The Performers Rights Organizations (PRO's) are in bed with the RIAA and the record labels. If anyone is ripping the artists off, it's the labels and the PRO's, not the filetraders. I refer you to a brilliant article at http://www.negativland.com/albini.html written by Steve Albini, producer of Nirvana's "In Utero" and mastermind behind the band Big Black.
