You start out with 5 GB and pay $0.05/MB over that.
So $1000 in fees plus 5 GB plan equals about 25,000 MB
So if they were watching Youtube at 300kbs (and I didn't feel like doing the math, link) so:
300kbs / 8 = 37.5KB/s
37.5KB/s * 60 = 2250KB/m
2250KB/m * 60 = 135000KB/h
135000 / 1024 = 131.8MB per hour
25,000 MB divided by 131.8 MB equals 189 hours 41 minutes of videos in one month.
I've used the example of mapping the US vs Europe by placing lights on the tops of people's heads and mapping when they go up and down (off of sidewalks) to explain statistical analysis to MBAs way more successfully than anything else.
I currently work with the UW-Milwaukee School of Continuing Education and we have the OSHER life long learning institute (with about 120 other OSHER subsidiaries) and are always looking for competent, well meaning, volunteers.
There are a ton of other areas where you could volunteer your time and energy, but the simple fact is that the number of people with technical skills is significantly smaller than the number of projects that would benefit (HUGELY) from a couple of hours of your time.
Seriously, how long would it take the average/.er to build a decent website and compare that to how long it would take the average MBA.
This is actually funny on my iPhone.
Every time it finds a new AP it will ask you if you want to join "NetworkX". So, from that point on, every time it finds an unsecured network called "NetworkX" it automatically connects you.
While back I connected to a AP where everything was default.
Few days later I was on the bus wondering why I kept getting a WiFi signal then loosing it every time we went past an apartment complex.

Sorry,that would be like RTFA
Or, you could sit on your couch and educate people with this really handy little keyboard that is able to switch between various diferent characters;-) unlike most phones.
Anyone ever read Jack McDevitt? He's obsessed with that sort of disaster (pun intended).
Actually, have you ever read Stephen Baxter's Manifold Space?
It is an attempt to understand the Fermi Paradox. Basically, if Earth is not unique, why don't we see signs of intelligent life?
He uses a similar, cyclical, event that basically wipes the universe clean every few millennia so life has to keep evolving from pond scum over and over again.
Baxter seems to take great delight in destroying the universe, or just the human race, in a wide variety of ways.
Item one: Nice quote, I couldn't figure out why you didn't provide a link to where you got it from. Then I found it and read the rest of the page. But you don't get the same warm and tingly feeling when you add the next line To copy or project the lyrics: License required So, if they were to print those hymns in a pamphlet, they would be infringing on US copyright law. Sorry, that part is on the bottom, so you might have to RTFA.
Item two: If you go to thier main US site you get this little gem
Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI) provides churches with simple, affordable solutions to complex copyright issues surrounding congregational worship services.
Item three: (This one is a bonus) If you were to go to The Brethren Press's FAQ they sum it up nicely
Do churches and other nonprofit organizations need permission to use copyrighted works?
Yes. Words, music, and other copyrighted materials are owned properties just as merchandise in a store is. Those who create the copyrighted materials labor to produce them, just as a carpenter might labor to produce a piece of furniture. It is erroneous to think that just because music, curriculum, or books are created for the glory of God, they ought to be free.
Now please, next time spend at least five minutes before pointing out how others are idiots. Especially when it's someones Mom.
You have to give George one thing, he got a lot of people interested in politics.
The best thing, for those in power, is to have a populace that thinks there is nothing they can do. A people who are so tired dealing with their problems they won't deal with the world's. To condition people to be so self absorbed, that they can't even see the actions of others.
When you have Tony Snow lying on tape and the only person who calls them on it is John Stewart, there's a problem.
When you have Dick putting hundreds of people in every sector of government, and it's only been in the last few that people have finally started to note what he has been doing(i.e. why these people in those places), you have a problem.
We need more people working to make changes and speaking out and fewer just pissed off that other's haven't done enough.
Also, if people don't know what lead up to Cap's death, please, at least read Wikipedia. We just have to hope that more people can get others interested enough to pay attention.
One interesting item of note is that at many sites with Microsoft Volume Licensing Agreements, such as our own, Windows XP Pro and Windows Vista Enterprise are available essentially for free (just the cost of the media) for all departmentally-owned computers - including usage in virtualization, and including usage on Intel-based Macs.
This is one of the biggest misnomers in University IT systems, IT'S NOT FREE
University systems pay a blanket fee to install as many copies as they want, but IT'S NOT FREE
We get a great discount so that all of the people who come out of college use Microsoft products and have no idea on how to use anything else.
You are part of DOIT, please stop telling people this! You should know better!
Ahh - Close. Did you even RTFA that you linked to?
Actually it was Yahoo that was outing anonymous users in China.
Google actually has a good record of protecting people's anonymity in China (Per your article), they just doesn't give them all of the web. Which is kind of funny since you now have people who are realizing that their government is censoring.
You make several excellent points in your arguments but I, unfortunately, don't see this as a valid next-step in governance.
I do agree, whole heartedly, that we need more dialog in our government. I agree that people need to become more involved in the actions and decisions that our officials make, on our behalf. The main reason I made my comment, was actually aimed at your idea of having "experts" debate a given field and the elitist mentality that represents.
I'm one of those goofy nuts who believes that we should all receive an equal representation for our opinions (even OMG Ponies!)
We (as in computer geeks) need to be using our talents to better inform, both the average citizen and the representatives themselves. The simple fact of the matter is that people are inundated with information about every possible subject and we need to be working on ways to better compress and filter that deluge. I would love to see a government site, with a page for each and every bill that was being proposed in government. Give the bill a Wiki style interface, show versioning and who are making amendments or changing the wording of clauses and have a section for moderated debate.
Not like the "transperency" of government contractors, where no one knows where the money is going (not even congress).
How about the Open Source community just goes over their patents one by one.
MS Patents Start at the top, show how they are not valid, too broad or there is prior art.
Who knows, after a couple hundred they might actually cry uncle.
With version 2.2 of Android and a Google Chrome extension ChromeToPhone YOU can do an OTA install of an app on YOUR phone.
And I remember a time when kids stayed the HELL OFF MY YARD!

You could also donate time to groups like the Wisconsin Association of Equal Opportunity or the Community Brainstorming Conference

Can we have a study where one group plays violent video games and the other drives in rush hour traffic?
Then we can compare which group has an elevated level of aggression and which one wants to kill all humans.

OMG! I've got a defective iPhone!
Can anyone tell me what these buttons are supposed to do?
When I press them it changes the volume.
I must be missing out on some amazing feature.
I'd look at the manual, but I'm way to comfortable sitting on my couch right now.
Wait! I'll look it up on my phone. I'll let you know what I find out.
Thanks for letting me know about this serious problem.
It always Amazes me how well informed people can be without ever using a device or reading a manual.
Thanks,

How dare Google come up with a proprietary means of filtering content for copyrighted material.
We demand that this product be made freely available to all parties and the code released as open source.

I just used up the last of my mod points, then went to a tab I opened previously.
When I used the "update", it would just hang.
If I reloaded the page, then waited a couple of minutes, the reload worked in a second or two.

This last Christmas I joined my family for service and noticed a copyright notice at the bottom of the page, for one of the songs.
Turns out they pay a yearly fee for the right to sing hymnals.
You got to love it
