So basically we pay for a license giving us the right to use their software. And that license may change at any time at their discretion. Especially if the product is faulty and needs an update
Not quite.
You ARE paying for a license to use that software, and they (msft) CANT change the conditions of that license whenever they feel like.
You are not forced to update Windows. The money you paid, and the original license you 'agreed' to, ONLY covers your original un-patched verion of Windows. Once you decide you update it, it has in effect become a NEW product.
This is why msft feels they can change the license. I have have no problem with that.
I do, however, have a problem with crappy software. But that is a slightly different issue.
huh?
you must be new here - to think that it's 'different' that someone has received a patent where prior art exists.
What I find a bit ironic (maybe naive) is that I was starting to think that the big companies were starting to reform the US's faulty patent system (or at least the faults of it).
Obviously they will only 'fix' it where it is good for them. Microsoft has recently benefitted from prior art examples.
I wonder what their internal attitude it to this. Not just Microsoft ofc, but all the patent reliant companies (IBM's patent arsenal makes MSFTs look like a -2 Light Warhammer of Softness). Do they sit around saying 'of course there is prior art! but we dont care. No one is going to be able to successfully challenge us on this, or if they do, we'll offer them a little bit of cash'?
Win2k3
2-10 in no real order. The only rule is hotfix checks before and after most MS installs.
1. any Windows hotfixes/patches
2. MS Office
3. Visual Studio.net
4. SQL Server 2000
5. IM Clients (Trillian, ICQLite, MSN)(3, I know. ICQLite lets me SMS)
6. CDEx
7. Photoshop
8. Nero (native IMAPI burning with w2k3 i know, just havent looked at it)
9. AVG
10. my editted HOSTS file (all users should do this)
11. any Windows hotfixes/patches
also of note; MSDN, Cooktop, Adobe Acrobat, Nethack (still play that when work gets me down), Sourcesafe and Kazaalite.
Does re-'installing' my music folders count?
The only thing I'd really like to add to this thread is my No. 10 - my HOSTS file.
Well said. If any post deserves a 5, it's this one.
Hopefully we both have.
Isn't it 4 times as detailed?
what?
Why go and re-invent the wheel?
we already have existing tools that will save lives; here
