Any tips, tricks, things to watch out for, stories of unruly customers and possible solutions, etc. you care to share? Want to see if I need to buy myself a crowbar for pretection before getting into this...
"Any female who I can carry on an intellectually stimulating conversation with scores mad points with me. Any other guys out there feel the same?"
I feel exactly the same.
I find ditzes quite annoying, especially 'preps' (as my sister calls them). "Oh my god, I like got like 5 like percent on my like math test. That is like so like unfair!"
Actually, it's not just women ditzes that annoy me. Dumb men annoy me too, just slightly less as I have more in common with them to start with.
Anyways, we get TONS of snow here, but there are not very many major snow-related accidents. Over the course of the very long winter I see maybe 4 or 5 major accidents on TV, usually during a major storm.
Snow days? A snow day here is when you can't get your front or back door, or any windows open, then maybe you'll get a snow day. The door still opens but the car is buried in the snow? Find some makeshift snowshoes, your hiking to school\work.
"Now watch those and imagine your sister or your daughter or someone you love doing that stuff."
These people can do what they like with their bodies, as long as they are of legal age. It is really none of my business what they do, as it is their choice to make.
"aren't you proud!?"
No, but I am not disappointed, either. Look at the silver lining, at least she's not sitting at home with 12 kids living off welfare, she's out making a living.
"I just don't get you and people like you."
I can say the same thing about people like you.
"Women are treated like meat in porn."... "Dudes watch women get used and you don't think that effects how they view women?"
You think these men don't already view them as meat before they sit and watch porn? Go sit and watch TV for several hours. You'll find they (the media) often treat women like meat, too. I'm not saying this is right, but it all goes back to my main point: This is a choice that they are free to make.
Ok, closing point: These people get paid, this is a job and a sometimes a career they have chosen. It is not the governments job to stop them from doing this because some people view it as degrading. Should the government stop people from owning guns because some people (such as myself) view it as dangerous? Try this, you'll have the whole of America screaming at the top of their lungs. Is it the governments job to stop people from staying up all night because some physicians view it as unhealthy? Nope.
These people likely don't view acting in porn as degrading, and if they do they have a price at which they are willing to sell their dignity. This is their choice to make, not yours, not mine, not the governments.
Yes, when referring to multiple sets of people, you could say peoples. He was not referring to multiple sets of people. Even though you are correct in saying it is a legal word, his usage of the word was not legal.
""People is already plural, you do not add need to add an s."
See, that's why I don't criticize other people's grammar.:)"
Typos be damned!
"This is just slashdot, who cares about grammar here anyway?"
*points to his grammar nazi post* Obviously I do. This site is supposed to be for nerds. I believe one of the defining characteristics of being a nerd is being intelligent, plus, they are likely fast typers, most of the users being computer nerds, so there is no reason at all not to at least try and use good grammar (even decent would do).
"You you use perfect grammar in IM too?"
Obviously I will make mistakes from time to time, but I try to use good grammar.
"People is already plural, you do not add need to add an s."
Typos be damned! Obviously it is a mistake:P I do that a lot with the way I type. I tend to rewrite each sentence three or four times before I settle on something and move onto the next one. Looks like I missed erasing a word while doing this.
"Do you use perfect grammar in IM too?"
Obviously I will make mistakes from time to time, but at least I try to use decent grammar. EG: I use "How are you doing today?" not "how r u ding 2day?!?" or "how r u doing today?".
"How about text messages on cell phones?"
I don't have enough money to afford a cell phone, if I did I would likely use proper grammar for the first while, then end up using incorrect grammar later on out of sheer laziness.
Sadly, I must admit to having gone overboard and also placed an ethernet port in my bathroom too... You haven't lived until you've taken over a friends server while sitting on the can...
The phone companies should maybe provide a bit of educational material, to show these people how they probably got the dialer, show them what not to do, and make them pay the full bill, anyone with an IQ greater than my belt size won't do it again. Maybe tell them to hang the $1200 bill on their wall as a reminder...
"Why would anyone do anything that's degrading to themselves? Would you strip down in front of a crowd of people? Probably not. But would you do it if they were paying you $250 per hour? Or if they paid you $1000 per hour? Maybe then. It doesn't seem so degrading when there's a huge incentive for you to do it. So why do some feminist extremists think pornography is degrading to women? Obviously the women in pornography don't think it's degrading, otherwise they wouldn't do it. Their dignity has a price, and they were willing to sell it. They don't represent all women in general, but only the few who chose to go into that business, just as women who choose not to go into pornography don't represent the women who do. So the phrase "pornography is degrading to women" doesn't make sense."
I didn't read completely through it all, but I read most of the way through the first PDF, and I can see why this guy would want to switch locations, but I do not understand what the issue is. So he sets up some servers at the new locations, updates DNS to point to them, leave them all running like that for a month or two, then take all your servers out of the old location to the new one. No downtime. If the ISP (NAC or something) cuts off his access before the time is up sue their asses off for lost profits (or about a hundred other things, this is happening in America, right?) and don't really worry because most of your customers wont even notice if the old servers disappear.
People is already plural, you do not add need to add an s.
Wait, while I'm at it, I suppose I should point out that you do not start a sentence with 'and' (at least not that sentence), and you capatalize the first letter of every sentence.
Don't they teach this stuff in grade school anymore?
(Note: This message is not to say my grammar is perfect, I know I make lots of mistakes...)
"It should also have the ability to intercept and decode any stream on your network."
One thing I have always wondered, but have never taken the time to figure out, is why can you not retrieve plain text data from a SSH session? You have all the information (keys, etc) travelling between the two hosts from the sniffing, can you not then use that to decode the data?
If this is possible, a feature to do this would be nice. If not, oh well.
I have it (Firefox) set to ask me before accepting cookies, so the only cookies I end up with are cookies that I deem required, which are definitly not tracking cookies (basically only cookies holding my username).
"The latest version of Visual Studio that I have is 6.0,"
The differances: Updated 'XP' Look, Better automated code indentation (annoys me, though, so it ends up turned off), displays the declaration of a sub\function as you type it's name, displays description of arguments\methods\variables\etc if you hold your mouse over them in the what's-it-called (that little box that pops up with the list of everything in it). Several other things, too, those are the things that stuck in my mind, though.
You know why? Because there is ALWAYS going to be someone complaining and fighting against it. How many users do you think a small local ISP needs threatening to cancel their service before they decide not to block ports, etc?
If people would take up the philosophy "You can please some of the people all the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all the time." and just block the ports, the complaining would die down soon enough.
And I belive I am just rambling on here. I will go now.
