They've stated that they will not incorporate recent RTS innovations unfortunately. I understand the developer specifically mentioned supcoms strategic zoom and by other recent new RTS features I'm thinking things like Relics squad features and strategic resource points.

  2. Easily solved with free software on War Declared on Caps Lock Key · · Score: 1

I agree caps lock has wasted potential so I went out and found a completely free solution, I've put the caps keyboard real estate to good use. Using AutoHotKey, free from www.autohotkey.com I've configured caps lock to shift the keyboard to a whole new set of functions.

For example the left hand side of the keyboard is mapped to the keypad - left, up, down, right, ins, del, home, end, backspace and a few other commonly used shortcuts and macros pretty much allow me to get through the whole day with out moving my hands from the comfortable asdfjkl; location or even looking at the keyboard at all. The configurations are virtually limitless since the scripting language is pretty powerful and the forums have most answers you seek.

  3. Agreed on The 25 Worst Tech Products of All Time · · Score: 1

While not being familiar with most of the products listed I can't agree more with the top 2 choices. RealPlayer (BUFFERING) with its hidden invasive system settings that were really hard to turn off (although recent versions seem to suck a bit less) would have been my choice for first place. And even though I live in Iceland and luckily have never had to use AOL the online buzz has made the name synonymous with poison. Many people have suggested DRM'd products should be on the list. I think it's too early to tell... I believe a decent DRM model can work out well in the future so while it's tempting shit all over DRM I don't think it's time yet.

yeah i've been thinking what the latest space combat sim is. is it still freespace 2?? i would have thought that since x-wing, tie fighter and freespace1-2 would have built a strong enough community to allow a new game to be developed. those games were awesome.

well, while having watched every single sg-1 and sg-atlantis episodes, both season really have something going for them, but BOTH series haver resorted long ago (sg-1 inparticular, sg-atlantis to a lesser extent), to made for tv episodic writersblock nonsense. what i'm talking about is bs timetravel (sg-1 1960's hippies) body switching episodes, breaking previously layed out "physics" rules on a whim, monoform planets (kids planet, female planet etc, no music planet etc). aka... campy this is also what i hate about star-trek (although i can't help watching because it's sci-fi) and was sad to see sg somewhat going that way. while this makes up for some fun episodes it damages the immersion of being in the created universe, you really have no idea what can happen next and for all you know a giant potato can come along and save the day. battlestar galactica has none of this, problems are solved with resourcefulness, politics and heroic deeds while maintaining a solid story arch advancing the plot in every episode. awesome awesome show.

  7. The new Battlestar Galactica is great! on New Battlestar Galactica Series Starts Tonight · · Score: 2, Informative

I've seen the first 8-9 episodes and I'm loving it. What I like about is that it has a certain "reality" to it that most other sci-fi episodes have not. It looks like it won't resort to standard cheesy sci-fi plot fillers when they run out of original material. Cheesy plot fillers being time travel, parallel universes, holodecks, body switching (shudder). Star Trek regularly uses these plots, Stargate does this also but manages it a bit better because it doesn't take itself too seriously and Farscape is just.. on acid.

    B5 was good though.
ps. I haven't seen a single episode of the original series, I'm still hoping bsg keeps it a bit more "down to earth" than most other scifi

  11. Re:keyboard design on Building Your Own Extra-Large Keyboard · · Score: 1

I agree, I've written software to map the right hand part of the keyboard as the keypad while caps is pressed, works pretty good.

It saves the effort of repositioning your right hand while coding. Coding involves alot of cursor movement with the keypad arrows and insert, home, pgup, pgdn and del so this method gets rid of right hand transitions to the keypad.

I also wrote software for mapping the right hand part of the keyboard over to the left hand part of the keyboard while the spacebar is pressed so I could keep my right hand all the time on the mouse and the left hand would handle 90% right hand input.
This involves a bit of a learning curve (to steep for most people I'd guess) but I don't mind. Also, there seems to be a patent out on this method, as this guy found out - http://www.halfkey.com

Reading my posts you may have figured out that I seriously dislike the popular keyboard+mouse setup , mostly because of the right hand transitions, anyone having similar thoughts and has found solutions?

I've seen a few posts about general keyboard designs. What I dislike most about the whole thing is having constantly to transfer my right hand back and forth between the keyboard and mouse. What a waste.. allocating 5 fingers for 2 buttons. I'm personally waiting for this to come out - http://www.combimouse.com Also does anyone remember when the F-Keys were on the left hand side of the keyboard? So much easier for all key cominations with the F-Keys on the left
