    Would this perhaps be a way of saving money at NASA? I.e., a private company selling these things to the government? Meaning that, rather than companies paying NASA to run their space program (to get satellites into space), NASA pays other companies for the vehicle (or perhaps, in some cases, just for the ride).

    They're doing quite well. And maybe this is just personal bias, but I think even a little info on protein folding (which we don't understand) is more important than proof-of-concept brute forcing of hashes.

    Look, I distrust faith-based charities too (what? To get fed, I have to confess my sins and take communion?), but 504(c)3s don't pay taxes either. Now, if churches are profit-making, you would have a point.

    You miss my point. Let's say I'm a criminal. I don't want to carry my gun; too expensive/hard to get, or too dangerous if I'm caught with it. Perhaps I don't want to kill my victims, just mug them. But, a magnetic ring would be harder to get caught with, and if my victim draws a gun, I'm gonna have no moral qualms about grabbing it and shooting him. Same for cops.

    Idiot. He's not saying they're disposable. He's saying that (in that situation) it would be quicker to grab your partner's gun and shoot it than to grab your partner's gun, switch magazines between it and yours, then shoot your own gun. It's a perfectly feasible situation.

    Folding at home has a lot of merit as far as studying prions (Creutzfeld-Jakob, aka mad cow in humans) and protein disorders (Parkinsons, Alzheimers, etc.). No, I'm not affiliated with them, but I do have a rare disorder caused by an enzyme (protein) deficiency, so I am fairly aware of proteomics (study of proteins) and medical research.

    Not that I particularly trust Cisco, but I wouldn't trust these guys - or any such shadowy group - without going through a MAJOR code audit first. Not sure I'd even pay 24,000 without some guarantee of getting the code.

    Seriously, though, it shouldn't be too hard for someone who is familiar with OpenOffice's code to harness that engine to do it (open .ppt with OO.org; export to S5).
