There is too much stuff being quoted and claimed from both sides, often seemingly backed up.

What we need is a nice, easy summary page, summarizing all the relevant studies so far, and what they imply or mean when it comes to climate page. AN overall summary taking every study into account, giving a good indication, meaning to oppose it is to go against peer reviewed studies or to speculate without a firm basis.

THIS! Yes. I'm left-leaning, politically speaking. A very good friend of mine is right-leaning. Though we both have some Libertarian tendencies, we have very different ideas. And we're both college-educated, smart people who enjoy (friendly) battles of wits with one another on a variety of topics, and we are big fans of using facts and truth, not propaganda. It's a rare situation where people with differing political views can have constructive arguments and inform one another and learn (unlike much of American politics).

And yet when he and I come to the climate "debate" (my scare-quotes tell you which side I'm on), we carried it to its logical conclusion which resulted in a war of links backing up our claims. It was almost the equivalent of a schoolyard taunt, "my scientists can beat up your scientists!" because neither of us are specialists in the field. I think we were probably both quite frustrated -- and we actually were interested in getting to the real facts, not just name-calling, generalizations and ad hominems (though we employ those just for fun).

A quick glance at your comment history suggests you're not a troll. I'm not trying to engage in verbal combat of any kind, just to have a constructive argument/debate. In a way, changing the name may seem like some kind of a surrender, or an admission that it was "wrong", but resisting on that basis alone only strokes the ego. Moving past any kind of emotional reaction to the suggestion of a name change, I'm hard-pressed to provide any lengthy list of practical reasons to be strongly attached to the name.

I'm not particularly offended by the name, but I'm sensitive enough to appreciate that it could piss people off or alienate some potential users who find they wish they could use the product in their workplace or institution but opt to use something different as to not ruffle feathers.

The "N" word is fucking stupid. If someone is being offensive and says the word "Nigger" then they are an easy to spot dumb fuck.
Blacks can use the word nigger all they want. I will be modded down because I have used the word twice.
I did not use it offensively. The word itself is not offensive because blacks can say it all they want.
That means that is is only offensive because I am not black.
That is racism. That to me is offensive.
I am not often offended, but people who corrupt language to change thinking are in my opinion evil and highly offensive.

A couple of points for you to consider...

    • If you think that all Black Americans feel the same way about the word "nigger", you're sorely mistaken.
    • The speaker doesn't get to decide whether his words are offensive. That's up to the listeners. If it's well known that a word is deemed by many to be offensive, the speaker ought to at least attempt to be respectful of that, even if he doesn't agree. To do otherwise seems anti-social, antagonistic, a jerk... pick one.
    • Of all the things in this world worth of the word "evil", I'm pretty sure you're stretching the definition.

As for the naming of GIMP and whether it should be changed... would it be such a big deal? We've watched many projects go through forks and renames and changes of ownership. StarOffice, OpenOffice.org, LibreOffice. Phoenix, Firebird, Firefox. I think we'd get along just fine with a name change.

To be obstinate on this topic is short-sighted if we (as a community) would like to see this product succeed at an ever-growing rate. If the name is holding it back from adoption or acceptance to any measurable degree, isn't it a good thing to seek improved marketing?

Considering how few real facts are known, the only reasonable response is to say that I have no idea whether Zimmerman's actions are acceptable or not. However, following someone is not usually illegal. Having a gun is not illegal. And, in Florida, shooting someone and killing them with a gun is not illegal under certain (very special) conditions which you may or may not agree with, although it is the law.

I may have been reading just another piece of biased garbage, but an article I read just tonight indicated that the two men had their "scuffle" in a grassy area between some houses. I mean, let's think about this: Zimmerman had to get OUT of his fucking vehicle and chase/pursue Martin. (Or do you think that Martin somehow coaxed/forced him out of his vehicle?) Additionally, do you think that Zimmerman would have been so damned "brave" to chase down a potential hooligan if he wasn't packing heat? Maybe, say, if he was carrying some pepper spray? Probably not. Zimmerman seems to have appointed himself sheriff and injected himself and his firearm into a situation where it was far from necessary. Of course I welcome exposure to all the facts, but what we know so far doesn't sound so good for Zimmerman. I don't care if Martin DID make threats or shoot off his mouth or whatever. As for Zimmerman's wounds, it seems perfectly likely that Martin believed he was fighting for his life against some random crazy guy. And maybe he was.

The problem comes in when we play fast and loose with semantics... to me, a subsidy is something that the gov't gives away, I guess. I don't classify a tax break (returning taxes paid into the gov't) the same way I do a subsidy. On top of that, are these not the same kinds of tax breaks received by all kinds of companies, not just oil companies? This article frames it in such a way as that the oil companies are not receiving "special treatment", per se. So how can you penalize them and say they're exempt from the tax breaks given to others?
