    And if you really care about the content you can then pay to get it, and if not, nothing of value is lost.

    Plus, if you actually pay for the content, you are an actual customer, not the product being sold. Additionally, as a paying customer, you have a stronger legal basis if the company in question sells, leaks or loses your personal data.

    Don't forget that the internet itself is a storage device. Assuming speed-of-light transfer (that's pessimistic) and 10Gbps transfer rates, we have a storage of about 33 kbit per kilometer of cable.

    What Apple did was merely to see a business opportunity. They did not invent any enabling technology. They just figured: hey, if people can use a small form-factor computer without a keyboard, that would be useful. Then they hyped that idea.

    I do not think patents should be rewarded for these business opportunities. It obstructs the free market. Patents should, at most, be rewarded for the underlying hard science.

    Hmm, I know it sucks, but couldn't they just ask the user to select _all_ files related to the movie? And then figure out which one is the movie and which one is the subtitles?

    It's not as easy as plugging in a thumb drive or popping an extra disk in there. If it really were, do you think the rocket scientists at NASA would have thought about that before they shot a billion-dollar robot into the sky?

    You're forgetting that scientists have this insuppressible itch to try to find increasingly complicated methods to do everyday-life things.

    Perhaps the piece of code responsible for replacing the firmware is heavily reviewed by a group of smart mathematicians.
    Security protocols requiring multiple round-trips are probably not used extensively, but perhaps they are used for setting up a session efficiently.
    Possibly the thing uses one-time passwords to control access.
    Etc. etc.

    You're right, but that would be speculative. Also, don't forget about possible migration of data from the old to the new system. That may take considerable effort too. And testing (the old system has gone through 10+ years of testing).

    200k isn't something you're going to rewrite in a couple of weeks. I think the absolute maximum you could get (for one very skilled person) would be about 5k-10k per week. Rewriting would take on the order of half a year.
