I've never seen "Breaking Bad", but if it is about a genius nerd (Woz) being exploited by an arrogant businessman, then I think the comparison is spot on.
You probably also put your money in a bank that invests in arms, saying: hey I don't care, this bank gives me the highest interest.
If you are a computing professional you should not buy Apple. Apple is the troll of our field.
You may disagree on the last point, but if you don't then please stop using that "but it's the only thing that works" argument, because it is simply flawed, there are plenty of alternatives.
Perhaps Slashdot can start by changing the Apple icon, just like we had the Borg icon for Microsoft. For Apple, I'd say something with a snake will do.
Perhaps Linux needs a minimalist leader. Throw everything out. Then step by step, bring back features and see what works, and what doesn't. In the process make sure that everything has a consistent look and feel.
The problem with "Rock Star" developers is, that they might lose focus when the job they're doing is too simple for them. They may like to code on your internet-enabled office-style application for a while, but in the end they long for more interesting, worthwhile and complicated matters that are on the edge of scientific discovery.
So eventually you'll lose them, and you're stuck with the code that they left.
What we actually need is a new "wild west". A place where there are no artificial restrictions like patents, lawyers and what not so that innovation can flourish.
I think it is time we start digging through all registered patents to find out which ones are infringed upon by Apple, and inform the owners. Alternatively, we can use these patents as evidence that the patent system is nonsensical.
Because it is not fun to rewrite your entire codebase to deal with unicode? And it is even less fun to rewrite only a part of your codebase if you can't use typechecking to keep the two "domains" apart.
Nerds, however can still get their fix because they're nerds (eg Cyanogenmod for phones, Raapberry Pi, any x86 computer, etc.)
However, it is becoming increasingly difficult. Mods are not something even the average nerd/scientist wants to deal with. And x86 computers will soon have the UEFI bootloader restriction.
If religions say that life is eternal, why are they so worried about what you do in your first century?
Because if they don't, meta-God will call them bad religions and send them to religion-hell?
Or, from an evolutionary perspective, if they don't, then these religions are not intimidating enough to keep their followers, and the religions will just fade away by natural selection?
Since relgion and evolution don't mix well, I'd say it is the first option.

But I like how you compare creating and distributing arms with a lawsuit over a frickin telephone.
That was a little extreme perhaps, granted. But still nothing compared to "going thermonuclear", the phrasing of Steve Jobs :)

imagine it being flattened and you will get the SGS3
Similarly, if you stretch out a typical smartphone in two directions, you get an iPad.
It is not considered hip to buy locked down and dumbed down products. Especially not at universities.

About the only thing Flash can do and HTML5 cannot do is DRM.
Can we replace the rats who currently infest our airports with actual four legged rats?
And then, conversely, we can use the TSA officers to detect explosives in the army.
You're absolutely right. However, it would have been interesting to know if he had reincarnated as a Foxconn employee though.

Actually, I think code should be distributed in an ABI-independent manner.
So distribute some form of intermediate code. Put a version number in there. And then let the OS process it into something the CPU can understand.

The question, however, remains: why didn't Samsung lawyers expose this?
Giant spectacular leap of logic.
That does not sound opinionated to me.

They may have invented TCP/IP, but not "on a computer". So I call this prior art invalid.
The US with its big corporations and lawyers is becoming too restrictive.
It is time to move to a different "wild west" which is actually in the east.
China, land of the free!

I get the correct answer 99% of the time. Too bad I hit that remaining 1% during my entire period of elementary school :/
that's what prophet Jobs called the smaller Samsung tablets when they were announced.
It's also close to "tricorder", so they might be sued by captain Kirk.
It is a matter of counting the similarities. See here:
