    Mac. Perhaps a few years ago it was "hard to be a Mac user". But it's not hard at all anymore, except for games - and even then it's only troubling, because most game development has shifted to the console. For any other kind of App you can get just about any top-tier program for the Mac, with Mac versions of any remaining holdouts on the way. In fact I would absolutly say that I dislike Office on the PC but do not find Office for the Mac as annoying.

    So by these standards, all Gates needs to do is make a nice need skin for Windows that makes it look like OS X and he can take over the world! Oh and change the name of Outlook to Entourage.

    Can't see the forest for the trees here. Even your quote of my post says overlapping connections. It's does say shit about interference. My solution, suggestion, whatever, had nothing to do with the collision issues he was bitching about. It was simply a way to verify that he was not automatically detecting the strongest signal as I have stated over and over. Overlapping and interfering with are two separate entities all together. Most routers are set to jump channels to find the transmission with least interference. If I was him, I wouldn't worry so much about other Wi-Fi networks as I would his microwave, cordless phone, or pager/cellphone. But what do I know? I thought enabling WEP would fix it!!!!

    Dude, unless you have one hell of a setup, there is no way you getting 20 kilometers on a standard retail WAP. Well, unless you live on the salt flats and are made of conductive material.

    Oh I am sorry, I thought WEP meant Waving Electromagnetic Penis. Jesus, no shit. I was simply giving you way for your OS to ignore any connection other then the one you actually wanted to connect to. The point of turning on WEP was to keep, in my case, Windows XP for automatically connecting to the strongest wireless connection present.

    I think the key to oversaturation isn't to stop people to making these cities 100% covered. If I am reading you correctly, I infer that you are saying that you don't want to be sitting if you house and having the free connection overlapping your DSL or Cable Modem.

    Well if you set your WAP up with WEP encryption, you won't have this problem. Well if you use Windows anyway. I just choose the connection I want to connect to and tell it to ignore the others. It works great especially with my key.

    As far as the other devices, THIS will be a big problem. I see a future where every time the phone rings my internet gets disconnected.

    Dude, the buzzzzz is there is NO WIRE! No one every said it would replace a wired connection. If you are trying to get speed, stay with a wire. But you want to enjoy surfing the web from the recliner, or while taking a dump, wireless is more then a convient way to access the internet.

    802.11 B isn't the way to go anymore either. Move on over to 802.11 g and experience faster data transfer. The basics are that you have to know what kind of monster you are trying to attack here. What kind of building do you live in? Do you have copper pipes? What about plaster walls? Do you have a microwave oven and a keg-a-rator next to where you are going to be surfing the web? If so, you need to step you the transmission a little. Do some googling on boosting your signal.

    I don't want to flame you, but you can't kill a technology that has tons of potiential and may alter the future only because you have had some bad experiences. For all you know, it could have been that 2.4 ghz cordless phone you bought at Best Buy that killed your connection. Or maybe you may leave in a nuclear fall out bunker. I bet a Wi-Fi WAP wouldn't transmit 10 ft in one of those.

    Normally I will play Devil's Advocate as anyone who reads my comments on /. already knows. But for me, this for once makes sense. WE as a country pay for the software that the government uses, so we should be able to see it, make it better, and offer opinions on it.

    On a secondary note...ah oh here goes...why is it that anyone on /. that says something negative about Open Source, or Pro MS, is automatically a troll?

    The market has a few more years left in it if the price point for mainstream PDAs fall below a hundred bucks. People will want it for the touch screen capabilities and the fact that I don't really care to have a cellphone that does a million other things as much as I care that my cellphone works.

    In the end, the PDA has lost it's niche and will be moved onto the shelf with the Casio Electronic address books.

    As an added note, every time a question like this is posted, I always think of that scene in Back to the Future II where Marty shows those kids how to use the High Noon(?) game. They respond with a "You mean you have to use your hands? This game SUCKS!".

    Actually most likely what would happen would be economically chaos due to everyone having to change and implement new software for their servers and workstations....and that's not an assumed stat...google some stats on illegal versions of Windows in the underdeveloped countries. Something like 75% of all Windows installs in the Asian markets are pirated. Not sure the stats on the EU.

    Everyone still is too blinded by the fact that it's Microsoft to get my point here. To stick it back to the man. That's all I am saying. Just don't pay the fine, hell give the software away. It's not like the books are in the red anyway. Even if the market share went to Apple's (OUCH!), they could still operate the company for numerous years with just what they have on the books.

    This is coming from Microsoft loyal though, so don't read too much into it.

    Hey, Townshend....put down the guitar for sec. Ok, the insurance policy isn't going to say crap about whether the home owner is going to profit from damages. It only cares about the damage from the house. If you were to get shot with a silver bullet, your life insurance policy is gonna pay out, even if you can sell the silver for a small profit.

    I just don't see how you think it's a bit odd that the insurance company pay on a policy covering damage to the home, when the home was indeed damaged. That makes perfect sense to me.

    Wow that's amazing. Did you know that if you eat pop rocks and drink Coke, you could die? What about if you go in the bathroom and chant Candyman, Candyman, Candyman without turning on the light? OR what about....JESUS! Get real dude, I allowed the first two. But my bullshit meter starting going off real loud somewhere around ALL FOUR TIRES, arcing across the wheel wells and apparently through the steel belts, flattening all four tires in the process. It also blew out the rear window from the concussion.

    There is a flag on the play....-5 mod points for bullshiting the /. community. Next time, space it out a little.

    I never said they would pull the plug, and I also realize that Bill Gates could take a good dump and lose more then the fine. I am just saying, as a point, being that MS is a US based company, I would say "ok, you know what EU, we are a monopoly, we did use shitty tactics, we are the DEVIL...so to hell with selling our product to anyone that uses the metric system."

    I don't by any means expect this to happen, but I think it would make for an interesting lunch topic. Hell from the earlier stories, it probably wouldn't hurt the profit margin that much because it seems that most people outside the US just steal it anyway.

    Dude I think that is best analogy I have ever heard. My addition is that if you are an expert car thief, take the better road and steal numerous Mercedes and sell strip'em down and sell them. Plus drive one around for yourself. Now that's my view on Windows.

    I will take Windows cause I don't like rusted floor boards and terrible exhaust fumes. I like heated leather seats and little windshield wipers on my headlights...at least until the 10 year warranty expires.

    that everyone here would go if it was coming to city near you. Yes I am talking about you Mr. Mozilla user...ah ha...and you OS X scripter...whoop whoop...and especially you Unix geek...seriously though, I understand the point here. MS is driving the Corporate bus so to speak in a land where it probably can stand to (gasp!) improve market share.

    But if I was the big MS, in wake of the antitrust ruling, I would just pull the plug on EU Windows support instead of paying the fine. Say screw it, then drive the bus up their ass! WHAHAHAHAHA!

    You look at patents as if they are the government issuing you the right to own the world. This is not how the idea worked in the beginning. The patent process is in place to do this...Let's say you wake up tomorrow morning, fall in the shower and have a revelation. You see a design in your head, and you fashion it with duct tape, a condom, and your wifes food processor that allows you to run your car off of rotting vegetables. Then on the way to work, you stop by the patent office and file a patent. Then come on in to work and tell me about it while we wait in line for coffee at the canteen.

    Me, being the sneaky bastard I am, decide to

    1. Steal your work
    2. Screw your wife
    3. Profit!!.

    Thankfully, because you patented your idea...you can sue the crap outta me and get yourself a new hot wife.

    Now I conede that allowing someone to patent air, or electronic auctions, or a thought or intangible property is incorrect. But that doesn't mean we should disband the patent office.

    The only problem I see with this is that for most of the world, people work hard on something so that they may profit from it. I am not bashing open source as it is a great way to do software. But you can't alway apply great things to other parts of the world.

    For an opposite scale view, I wouldn't start a company that designs houses and just give away the blue prints. I just don't think that it will work across the board. In an ideal world it would, but just how Communism looks great on paper, when you apply ideas to a real world environment they don't work; people just aren't that nice. No one really wants to give away their ideas for free...or at least most people don't want to invest money in an idea or principle not looking to make a profit.

    I am just glad that Open Source movement works in the IT world. It's not even the mainstream way to do it, but luckily the minority of people who believe in something, do the majority of the computing in the world. That's why it works.

    That's just my opinion....it's probably wrong.
