Since they are not citizens, they should be taxed at a higher rate for the privilege of working here. The employers would have to pay them higher wages to compensate for the higher tax bracket, thus leveling the playing field for US citizens competing for the same job. This would increase the tax base in the US, still allow employers to hire the highest quality candidates, and force the employers to pay for this "top talent" appropriately.
I've done the same with 3ware. I got a bit less space with my 200GB drives because I always run one HOTSPARE. 3ware labels each drive and you only run one drive per IDE channel. Run on Linux it is very economical. Just be sure to invest in a good Power Supply (noise and number of molex power connectors) and well ventilated case.
If you have a tape drive and enough tapes, you can use something like amanda to back it up. It does not have to be a big tape drive, so you could pick one up fairly cheap.
Most of the software "pirated" by people is software that they would not pay for in the first place. If they "had" to pay for it, they would just skip it.
I do not think that the losses are as severe as stated. But I do not doubt that they exist at some level, especially gaming.
And if games did not cost $50 each, there would be less pirating there anyway.
Are you telling me that you would not own a computer or have broadband at your home if your company does not pay for it? Sure, back in the day my old company would pay for a "maintance link" into the systems so that I could perform emergency services on their, and client's, systems.
Now the internet and broadband are common, and most people I know have it. I am payed to keep systems running in a 7/24/365 manufacturing environment. I am compensated by salary, bonuses, stock, etc. That is what pays for my computers at home and broadband connection.
If you are an Admin, deal with it, or get into another field.
Backing up your hard drives is the best reason to get this drive! You can backup your smaller 80's and 160's with this drive. You could even backup all your systems at your home with one drive (probably a couple of times over).
Tape hasn't kept up with disk capacities. So the only cost effective backup media solution is another hard drive. If you need the backups offsite, you can put it in a USB enclosure (or removeable tray) and ship it.
Don't know if you want to hear this but....
My brother ended up with schizophrenic symptoms. He was never properly diagnosed, as he was over 18 at the time the severe symptoms started, and none of us could get him to follow counseling or medications. We ended up having to bring him to the county once for his own protection, and they medicated him. He was a different person under medication. He was my brother.
After getting out of lockup, he stopped taking his medications. He ended up killing our mother with a gun in her house within a year. About three years after first exhibiting the altered behaviors. He is in jail now, but still refuses medications.
My advice to you, out of my personal experience, is to make sure that your sister stays with medications and counseling. She can live a mostly normal life. Keep in touch with her, and watch her closely. Research as much as you can about the disease and become an expert. I only became an expert too late.
The problem with the American science education system is simply put in two letters: PC
I have a degree in Physics. I could barely get into any research internships, because I was a white male. I only got into one because I was working in the Shared Physics/Chemistry Laser lab at my college at that time, and my boss ran a NSF program.
All of the research positions for undergrads were specifically for women or minorities. I called on the few that did not state in writing that they were for minorities or women (or better yet a minority woman), and they all verbally told me to not bother applying because they only took minorities or women. Getting the pattern yet?
However, in my Physics classes, most American students were white male. So, given that most American students in Physics were white males, yet no research was available to white males, it is pretty obvious where the American decline in science comes from. The PC pendulum must swing back to allow everyone to participate in the sciences, and stop artificially bolstering any single group, whether by race or sex.
On the plus side, I am now a happy Unix geek!
