  1. Re:Oracle will do just fine on Oracle Sues Companies It Says Provide Solaris OS Support In Illegal Manner · · Score: 3, Insightful

Nonsense. I work for a fairly large university in the NE. We were an virtually exclusive Sun hardware/Solaris shop. Due to Oracle's behavior, we've moved wholly away on both hardware and software since they acquired Sun. Good riddance. I also know of an enormous urban school district (where I used to work and still know many people) that has done the same. While this is only an N of 2, I doubt we're all that rare.

I work for a University out west, and our story is the same as yours. We had a large Sun/Solaris presense... not anymore.

Not just Linux, they yanked it out of the kfreebsd kernel too, which is causing problems because you can't just install a firmware-kfreebsd package - yet. I think they were a bit premature pulling the trigger on the kfreebsd kernel. Fair enough - I had forget that the primary market for Opera Mini is cell phones (I don't even browse the web on mine) and not the Wi-Fi enabled PDA I was testing it on. As such I didn't see the point of proxying the connection, especially when I may or may not trust who is proxying it.

I had a previous version of Opera Mini on my Palm TX (I was looking for something better than Blazer) a while back. When I fired it up for the first time it made me agree to their license agreement. I've never been one to blindly accept a license agreement. Now while I normally don't read the whole thing in detail, I'll usually skim a license if it isn't GPL, MPL, etc. I noticed something peculiar in their license (and I forget the details as it has been some time now), regarding the connection. I think something to the effect of they were monitoring some type of statistics. Being curious at this point, I browsed over to my website (using Opera Mini) and then viewed the logs to see if the connection came from my IP or another... It came from another IP! DNS lookup showed that this connection came from and opera IP address. I promptly removed the browser from my Palm and haven't touched it since.

The convenience of a (non-electronic) bathroom reader is also nice. =) Imagine walking to your friend's throne room, and having a laptop sitting on the back for the toilet instead of a book. lol.
