My brother stored 100+ movies on cd's a few years ago (2-3 years), and lots of them are unreadable now. At that time we did not think it would harm anything to use those, but storing the cd's on his sleeping room with hot temperatures during the summers and the nights, but cold during winter (and when he opens his room to ventilate) completely ruins them.
Nowadays with so many pc's coming and going we have enough hard drive space to keep data there. We only need to make sure we buy new drives from time to time to keep them very alive...
The newest european cars nowadays come with an extra protection agains collisions with pedestrians: The hood in front of the car is lifted a few inches after 40 or so milliseconds so the pedestrian gets lifted as well and won't get run over by the car but lands on the softer hood and might hit the car glass.
The powertrain generally takes up considerable space in the engine compartment, leaving little room between the engine and the bonnet. To remedy this, the C6 comes with an active bonnet system as standard that automatically raises the bonnet in the event of pedestrian impact. Thanks to an impact sensor and pyrotechnic mechanism, the bonnet rises 65 mm in 40 milliseconds. A second mechanism maintains the bonnet in its raised position despite the impact and thus absorbs the deformation energy.
I use linux as my main desktop since Mandrake 8.2, but use Opera as my browser. But your initial reaction should not have been that negative since this news is a good thing, and people _should_ care about good things! The reaction you give now also does not answer any question you/I raised...
The more bricks that start falling out of the Microsoft monopoly will encourage extra bricks to fall and might take the entire wall down after some time. Don't forget street credibility! Every small step in the right direction is a small step in the right direction...
Netherlands being the place where it first appeared, and being from Belgium myself, I can say that everybody here simply says 'MSN' when they mean 'MSN Messenger'. It's more common in europe anyway to use MSN instead of other popular IM networks used thoughout the USA and other countries. IM was never popular with non-geek computer users here and when broadband internet (with a fixed price/month) arrived most teenagers (the primary group of users in europe) all started using MSN Messenger.
This keyboard will be equally succesfull as the dvorak keyboard. People are so accustomed to their 'native 'keyboard (I have azerty but can type fairly well on qwerty) they won't change unless this new keyboard really is so much better. As for gamers, why would I want to give up the luxury of binding each and every key I want from the standard 101-key design to a special function, or why would I want to reset my movement/jump/whatever keys?
Unless they give away bars of gold with each one I don't see why the general public might need this keyboard.
From the article: Alphabetical letters are easier to find and keys are color-coded on the NSK535R to aid hunt & peck typists So people who are new to computers need to 'find' keys on their keyboard? After a while you know where they are, I guess. I don't think new computer users would like to be treated as children with such a nice colorful slimmed down keyboard. I expect people want the whole deal, even if it's only for later on...
I just take a wait and see approach, who knows what MS will do when they release Vista in about a year, and what they'll do with office 12. I followed MS's moves for a long time now, and am afraid it'll be more of the same over and over again.
And in 5 years, the world might be a completely different place for software, who knows?
People on slashdot can get pretty upset about the studies Microsft shows the world, and these mostly say Microsoft is the king on the hill. But don't ever forget they don't show ALL of their studies. It could well be that 60% of them does not favor Microsoft good enough or not at all.
Of course I realise they try to use situations that are more likely to favor for them as for [insert competitor].
No if just once a bunch of other studies leaked we could get a real view over what MS is doing with their researches all the time...
In opera 9 preview 1 it works, but incredibly slowly. I get about 1 fps, because it reloads all the scenery and redraws the white walls with every move.
Perhaps because the/. effect? Or is javascript not dependent on the server? Or is the implementation for javascript in opera not optimal?
Just like ink cardridges for printers. They sometimes cost the same amount or even more that the printer itself. (Exactly why I have a laser one, myself...)
In other words, MS is better? What? Not at all!!! I run linux as my desktop for 1.5 years already, and am a big MS-hater, so to speak. I just objectively think the stuff I said in the previous post. Where do you extract the part 'I love MS, they are better'???
This is a mistake on your part, excuse me very much! (Long live the Anonymous Coward!)
Try to read my posts more in to depth, if you will...
One may not forget MS probably asks many experts/groups to make studies, but therefore does not need to show the findings of all of them. They only choose those with good points for themselves, so him being asked for a study does not directly have to mean he's pressurized to come up with good results. (Even though I presume MS chooses settings & configurations which favor them, of course.
Longhorn: noun. A 64-bit recompile of a collection of 32-bit extensions and a graphical shell for a 16-bit patch to an 8 bit operating system originally coded for a 4-bit microprocessor. Written by a 2-bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.
No ogg support? On a linux platform (which makes is a few steps easier to include it anyway)? Many linux enthousiasts will probably love this device (future mod abilities?), but yet no ogg support?
I have lost of ogg music, and therefore am reluctant to buy even an ipod, so what about it not being put on this device? How hard can it be?
No problem, apart from it's name, RC3 is 100% identical as 2.0.
They just updated the version number thoughout and made sure beta was mentioned nowhere anymore. Once they were sure no (major) bugs were found in the latest beta they could push it as a final version.
I hoped to see a great video with some actual footage of the handheld in action, but alas it's just a guy rotating the device in front of the camera. Bummer.
In the other posts about this topic it was wonderful to see the movie(s) working just fine. But when will I be able to use it on my linux system? Less hype, more product please...

Example from Citroen.

Do slashdot editors ever do a google on their own site?
This could easily stop their horrific dupes, it's not even funny anymore...
All I know is that I could get where I was going better if I could shoot turtles at others on the highway.
:-D
Sure, but then the other cars will slow down or spin at your oil patches.
(For the people who wonder: Mario kart!)
Let's put code in the kernel that know the route to Redmond and fires all rockets at Microsoft automatically.
:-D :-D
This needs to be covered up fairly good, however. Take that, Bill Gates!

I just knew my code is better with goto's than while's, for's, and all those other hidiously difficult to use statements.
Now if I just could fine the mail address of my CS teacher he'll finaly have to correct my grades from before.

Easy enough, or could it be better?

Just keep your RC3, it's the same as 2.0 final.

Well, they are pretty b0rk3d. Even the nyud.net:8090 link fails.
A mirror, anyone?
Is it just me or are there a whole lot of always-on pixels on those examples? Not too good, in my opinion...
