i switched to suse linux from windows, without any prior exprience in linux. i just picked up a copy from a best buy near me (an older one, but still...) for $10. there's lots of software built for it in.rpm's and it doesn't have a website-based update! you can get an.iso from here.
have a lot of fun!
if the middle east wants to be one state, that's absolutely fine by me. after all, the united states is a damn large nation compared to the rest of the world (not the largest, but still). but once we start dealing with things like fundamentalism things get a little sticky. saying something like "we can't let a fundamentalist government come about because a fundamentalist government does x bad thing" then we make the same kind of sweeping generalizations that we don't like about fundamentalism.
fundamentalism has never been a problem that can be combatted by force or violence. force and violence merely whip fundamentalists into a more wild furvor. fundamentalism is a problem that needs to be taken on in a different way that one would take on a specific government - after all, the problem isn't w/ a specific government, but an ideology, and ideologies are notoriously difficult to change.
while yes, there have been a few high-profile cases of religious stuffs being removed from government areas, that doesn't mean there have been more. why would there be coupons given out to private (religious) schools, unless the government wants people to to go those schools? and what about the stink that was put up when any of those stuffs were removed? admittedly, that isn't because of g.w., but nonetheless those were government officials.
there's no good reason why a suburban can't get 40 mpg. the reason, however, is that no enough people care enough about energy use to convince manufacturers to make their vehicles more efficient. there have been a few hybrids produced recently, but they haven't been picked up because apparently they aren't expensive enough. or something. i honestly don't have any idea why people didn't stampede for these vehicles.
no man - you've completely missed the fucking point. there is no (again - NO) good reason why we (being the united states or the western world or the entire fucking world or who have you) should not allow an islamic person to rise to power. unless that reason is a practical one of "separation of church and state" which it's hard not to see has completely fucking disappeared since lil' georgie came to office. in which case, we should look to our own damn selves (we = united states) before going on a fucking crusade again. but perhaps hypocrasy is in style now.
you agree that the united states is a wasteful society, yet instead of proposing that we stop being wasteful by using electric motors as opposed to gasoline engines, we get cheaper prices of oil and keep driving our chevy suburbans (which, by the way get 15 miles to the gallon). maybe i'm just a tree-hugging hippie, but i think that instead of killing 14 thousand civilians in order to secure more stable oil prices so that we need not worry about inefficiency, it might be a good idea (at least in theory) to funnel the money that is spent on our offensive military (which you claim is being used to get more stable oil prices from the middle east - adding to our inefficiency) into - gasp! - researching non-wasteful energy and intelligence! that way, we (we = united states) aren't necessarily so wasteful as to require stable oil prices from the middle east, we still have a defensive military powered by accurate intelligence!
but why be smart? after all, people don't want a president who's smarter than they are, and corporations want a puppet. this way, everyone (but those who pay attention) wins!
We don't want to indiscriminately kill innocent people
we may not want to, but according to this we're sure doing a lot of what we don't want to do. i guess we'll just have to suck it up and deal with it though. no one else wants to kill almost fourteen thousand civilians.
i'm still not clear how it was "mind-numbingly clear" that iraq had weapons of mass destruction. after all, if you had weapons which could kill large numbers of people at once, and you were being invaded by large numbers of people, wouldn't you use those weapons as opposed to not use them? and yes, i know that iraqis who would use them were threatened with immediate death or whatever, but against those odds, they're faced with immediate death anyways! if they had them, they would have used them. there's no reason not to.
exactly! we should stop an islamic state from raising! we should bomb the living shit out of the entire middle east! we should not take any blame for tossing our weight around! we should blame those countries our populous unreasonably despises! we should use every drop of oil we can find before even considering an alternate source of energy - after all, the only way to power anything is w/ gasoline, right?
you spout of so much mindless rhetoric that you make mccarthy sound like a sane individual. pick a stance and stick w/ it for at least the duration of your rant.
but overthrowing the government wouldn't be very democratic, now would it? also, it would be an underhanded "commie" move, and just plain "un-amurican".
it's always been an issue of "pick one and stick w/ it" for me. i can accept that micrsoft wants to keep compatability with everything - that's peachy. but then they go and do things like this. i mean, if they decide to release an incompatable system (which is what their service packs are - there's no denying that; if you look at software it'll require windows xp service pack 1) then have every release be incompatable, that way we know to expect microsoft to break all our stuff.
"The way we look at it, we definitely see the PC as the hub for digital entertainment in the home," he said. "It's got the powerful processor; it's got the big hard drive; it's where the music gets downloaded and the content gets stored...PCs are definitely where innovation happens at the most rapid clip."
says the microsoft guy... i'll give you two guesses why microsoft isn't cramming xbox w/ hordes of extra multimedia stuff. here's a hint - they dominate the PC market! why give people one machine that does everything you want/need when you can give them two or three for 4 - 5 times the cost, with all revenue going to the same company?
also, the fa didn't mention anything about the minivan swerving. the driver just ran over the student? the fa never mentions anything about the driver of the minivan even braking. a remorseless killer, eh? regardless what the fa says, you don't know what happened - you weren't there. there are many, many different ways to swerve across the road. slow drift, into the side of the minivan, 50 yards ahead of the minivan, perpendicular, the list goes on.
maybe i'm speculating here, but if i saw something with the body of a lightweight dune buggy driving down the other side of the road, i'd pay attention to what it's doing, and be a little more cautions. after all, it's not exactly an armored car. maybe i'm giving owners of minivans too much credit, but aren't they supposed to be safety-minded? that is what minivans areallabout, right? why are these vehicles so huge as to obscure the vision of other drivers, when their heightened vantage point is put to no use, other than to destroy the visibility of the road?
man, it must have been pretty low-riding for that minivan (higher than most everything else, save monster trucks and aircraft - thus able to see everything on the continent but whatever is in their blind spot) to not see the guy. perhaps underground?
would you switch to ms linux if they made a distro? i don't see anything so great about windows apps that would keep me using their crappy systems.
and even if they did make ms linux, their unix-dos translation/native linux dos format/whatever would undoubtedly be part of the operating system, and thus part of ye olde GPL. since it would be GPL'd, it would thus be portable to other linux systems, giving me yet another reason to not use ms linux.
i think that execs shouldn't be lying to the world - i just think it's retarded that they don't do anything, but are paid enough to keep 100 other people employed.
what exactly is the job description of an exec? all they do is sit as a figurehead on the company, give speeches every once in a while and eat the money that could be used to pay 100 or so normal employees, all while saying that company spending needs to be cut back, while lighting a cigar made from $1000 bills with a lit $1000000 bill.
possibly. but why in the world would microsoft make such a move? anyone who knows what the words "open source" means also knows not to trust microsoft. that's part of the point.
assuming they do make the "switch", however, doesn't automatically make them a humongous player in open-source software. this is because suddenly, they're playing by a new set of rules. if they make a linux distro, then they're playing by the rules of the GPL, and that means they can't say "nope - this is ours, bitches!" and engage in seige capitalism against whomever tries to look at their code.
if a consumer is considering running linux as their primary OS, then they already know why they don't want to be running windows. base language (unix vs dos) won't make a difference in that. no one already in the linux community would touch that with a 50-foot pole, so microsoft would have to rely on those informed enough to know what linux is, yet ignorant of why they would want to use linux. must i point out why this person won't switch to linux, microsoftian or otherwise - let alone exists?
i like how in the slideshow it quotes balmer saying "linux is keeping us on our feet". at least he admits that without linux, microsoft would be dead in the water. i also think it's interesting to note that microsoft keeps talking about technology as if it's a competetion - "we already won against novell" (as if beating someone once prevents them from ever being a threat again (cough cough apple cough)).
there's so much stupidity quoted in this article that it hurts... "don't tell us you're deploying linux just because you can" - but what if i am? what if i am running it just because i can? not to mention the 13 studies paid for by microsoft that all showed *gasp* that microsoft is better in every concievable way, shape and form than $OPPOSITION. who would have guessed that a microsoft study would put microsoft on top?
Here's what I propose: Web publishers should get together to set up a one-stop registration process for everybody. We sign up once and would be done with it.
no corporation will agree to that - it doesn't offer anyone an advantage. think about this from the perspective of a single media corp: would you agree to something that doesn't offer you an advantage if you can instead screw over the people who you want to consume your media? while yes, it would be very nice to have a one-time, net-wide registration, the only way that would be possile is for (naturally) a fee. once they find out that people will pay for that, we'll have to pay to access the site, as well (on top of the one-time registration host's fee). good idea, but will never work.
who says we want everything for free? fuck - i've bought two open-source OS's in the span of 6 months from a store - so that the people doing their thing can keep doing it. while yes, we do like free (who doesn't?) it's not like we expect people to work for nothing.
and hit them w/ every law applicable, eh? after all - having one law for one crime is just too simple. we need 4 - maybe even 5 - laws over each crime. it's more intimidating that way - both to criminals and those uppity youngsters who try to get into law as a proffesion.
oh no... he's asking people to give him money...?! that bastard! how dare he?!
so he's asking people to help him out. does that make him any different from a beggar on the street? only in the fact that he doesn't appear to be homeless. no one's calling a beggar a scammer - people know what they're doing when they donate money: donating money. and is anyone really surprised when they're mislead anymore? i know i'm not - i live in america. it's a favorite pasttime of our government - lie to the public's faces and at the first chance do exactly the opposite. oh - go figure, another liar. *shrug* nothing new here.

as for "no games" - if you really need evercrack, WoW, CoH, etc, you can suck it up and dual-boot. there's no need to live in windows because you want to play an MMO. and before anyone goes & says "not everyone has the know-how to dual boot!!!111", most distro's automatically set it up now. granted, you have to know that windows is pissy and has to be resized to the first partition, but that isn't anything that can't be found after a.42-second google. and if you're installing an OS on your own, chances are that you already know something about partitions - if you don't, then chances are you're having someone who does help/walk you through it.
anything else?
and with sony claiming that even showing something on the screen is copywrite infringement, we'd better get rid of those pesky computers. also those movable-type printing presses had better go too - after all, their express purpose is to reproduce copywrited material.
sticks and mud? gotta solidify the mud & burn down the forests so there aren't any more sticks...
no, we bash ie because it's crap. the only reason it loads anything faster (or boots faster) is that it's always open and always running (unless you're using a mac). and it's simply not possible to use ie your whole life without getting spyware on your box. run ad-aware or spybot search & destroy. you'll be surprised exactly how much spyware is on your system.
