Well i suppose you could expect a stream of comments from people strongly disagreeing with you. I'm one of them. UF is damn funny and is really well drawn. True enough, not every UF comic i find funny, or even good. But that's just personal taste. I'm also a great fan of Garfield comics, but i have yet to find one pocket (i have them all) that contains only good ones.

UF amuses me. I have it bookmarked and look at it every morning, together with a cup of coffee. I use it to start the day, and sometimes quote the comic to my colleages and invite them to take a look. I introduced UF to my boss and he loves it enough to read everything in the archives. Don't say it's a waste of time. What is a waste of time is this.

Since businesses are running fine on the old versions, Microsoft needs to create problems with the old stuff to force them to upgrade.

That doesn't seem right to me. Microsoft might force people to upgrade by not providing security solutions to older products, but i highly doubt they will create a problem for this purpose. And how are they going to do this? Build in a bug in IE and hope nobody finds it for 2-3 years, so they can say you'll need to upgrade to the latest version of MS OS if you want it fixed? I doubt it.

Let me start by saying that this is a great idea. Unfortunately, i don't see people buying an 'unknown' OS together with their 'expensive' laptop. People fear changes. I can't think of anyone who would not buy a laptop with a Windows OS installed. Why would they? What's the argument of the salesperson? I'll tell you what the average salesperson will answer: "uhm .. Linux is just cool and opensource and free! all applications are free!". Followed by a stream of questions by the customer who wants to play his games on it, but is unable to because they only run in windows. Not to mention MS Office (dont come with OpenOffice.org because the average customer can't work with anything other than what they're used to), internet explorer (yes - i know people who refuse to work with anything else because they say it's not safe) and various other MS-only programs.

So what's the use for the average buyer? Not much. They have a cool OS that they know almost nothing about, can't run their own programs on, and looks altogether weird compared to Windows. Oh, and the local neighbour/friend/sysadmin-wannabe/colleage can't help the buyer once they have a problem. Call the helpdesk? Hahahaha! You're funny. If i have linux i shouldn't have to call the helpdesk :P

But recently i saw something else; a phone number that costs and gives you a (registration-) code, which you use to register the product.

Now for me, this is perfect. I don't need a credit card, and calling a phone number that costs me a couple of euro is too easy not to do. It takes very little time and it's *fast*.

I have no idea where you could get such a service though, but i'm sure somebody here knows. And there's always google ofcourse :) Also, i'm not sure if this service handles big amounts, and i'm not sure how much you would like to ask for this. Keep in mind though that the easier you make the entire process, the more people will likely donate. This goes for all methods i think. Nobody likes to click through 10 pages, fill out your personal details, enter creditcard info, WAITING, etc.

I happen to agree with you here. I'm trying to convert some of our systems from windows to linux, and ran into alot of questions from people. The most heard one is "What do we do if something goes wrong? We have (paid) support now. Do we have this guarantee as well with opensource programs?" to which i have to say "no" most of the times. I can't give them black on white that if Evolution decides to crash on every system, or OpenOffice screws up huge documents, that this will be fixed in a short period of time.

But most of all people don't want to make the switch because this whole setup (linux instead of windows in a large corperate environment) is not 'mature' enough; the amount of companies running a sitewide windows environment is ridiculously higher than companies running an opensource variant. Or so i would think. Anyone who claims different is invited to present me (actually, the people i'm trying to convince) with some evidence.
