I have a bunch of old cheap laptops in different
rooms around the house connected to a wirless
network all running some form of unix (actually
OpenBSD and Slackware Linux). From my central
PC Windows XP based I have the Oddcast plugin to
Foobar2000 running. On one of the laptops I have
Icecast running. I then stream Rhapsody or any
music source around the house to any room all controllable
through ssh sessions from any room as well.
The biggest challenge is getting the sound synced
between two rooms. You can get reasonably close
by clever use of the unix tee program and the
unix nc (netcat) and a whole bunch of |s.
I use both vi and emacs extensively. I often use vim with the vimacs extension or emacs with viper mode. To me the most powerful thing about vi is the command mode. Its downfall though is that vi in insert mode is soarly lacking. Emacs on the other hand has an extremely powerful insert mode, but essentially no command mode (some people have claimed that M-x takes you into command mode, but this is not the same). So both vimacs and viper give me emacs keys in insert mode, but still allow me access to the very powerful vi command mode with the press of the escape key.
I just went to www.dell.com. No mention of Linux. So I chose the "Home and Small Office" link. Top of page says "Dell recommends Windows XP". Still no mention of "Linux" (I did a search) So now I chose "desktop systems" link. Again "Dell recommends XP" at the top and again no mention of Linux. So I choose a model, the 4600, again Dell recommends....
and even when I customize my chosen model there is not even an option to select Linux. Only an upgrade to XP professional.
I don't mean to defend Lotus Notes as I agree it is a beast however I have been working with it since Release 3 and in my experience I have very seldom had a corrupted database. It does stop working for a myriad of other reasons though. (Mostly instability in the client and for some reason network communication hang ups)
>Firefox still sometimes effs up Slashdot's rendering. Or is it the other way around?
Sorry if this is old news but I find that whenever Slashdot rendering is screwy I just hit Ctrl-+ (Increase font size) and this has always fixed it fo r me. But it still is annoying.
I must point out to you that its not 100% correct to say that "if youre not happy with the Linux kernel you can go with BSD." A fundamental difference between Linux and *BSD is that Linux is a kernel that relies on other tools (mostly GNU tools) to create a complete OS while the *BSDs are distributed as kernel and tools in a complete OS all developed and maintained by the same team. Not that one is better than the other but it is a major difference in philosophy.
While I love OpenBSD and have 3.5 installed on my old circa 1995 Dell laptop, I am very disapointed with its performance (not on my laptop of course!) as compared to the othe BSDs and Linux. I realize that the developers probably don't have time and they have done an excellent job on the security and stability but I think OpenBSD would really shine once it gets some performance improvements.
I agree with you Decaff. Recently I have been working on a project involving a lot of java dev under 1.4.2 and I was pleasantly surprised at the performance as compared to previous versions (1.1 to 1.3). I am also factoring in faster hardware and find that the difference between Windows and Java apps has closed (at least on XP).
I am sorry that you are experiencing these leaks as I am fortunate enough not to have had them yet. I also am running a 512MB machine (WinXP) and I have almost always got at least 3 FireFox tabs open and I very seldom reboot. The one thing I don't have is the Flash plugin. Could it be this causing the leaks you are experiencing? The only instability problems I currently have are:
1) Bookmark icons on the bookmarks toolbar seam to come and go as they please. (Also happens in IE)
2) Text entered in a form field before the page is fully loaded often gets blanked out once the page has completed loading. (Not in IE)
Otherwise I have found 0.8 to be at least as stable as IE and certainly much snappier.
Good luck.

I am sure it is well known by now that www.adti.net is running FreeBSD (at least according to Netcraft).
Is this a ploy by the the real sponsors of the report?
The slashdot community is pro-linux.
Isn't it more pro-choice than pro-anything? At least that is why I keep coming back here.
Although there is a lot of bandwidth dedicated to Linux on/. it has always struck me as a site dealing with more real issues than OS wars.
Yes, two different, and perfectly valid opinions. It always seems unfair when one side appears to be more honest than the other (at least to me) and the honest side then loses the race. A friend recently commented that conservatives are always going to win because they have perfected the art of non-accountability. I think he was referring to the party designated as R on C-span but this could equally apply to dishonest ad sponsors.
Of course you are right in that we want everyone to try whatever they want. The sad truth unfortunately is that a lot of people that I have spoken to actually base decisions on ads like these and TCO costs. I guess its a bit like elections......

You may be interested to know that Python was not the first to do this. The language OCCAM did the same thing and it too may not have been the first.

In parts of the valley you also see the sun RISE over the water. Take a look at er, http://maps.google.com/ ?
My start page took a lot less than 20 minutes to code and it loads fast too! about:blank
Just put a bunch of wgets in your crontab to pull the excellent content from Radio Netherlands here: http://www2.rnw.nl/rnw/en/listenonline/weeklyarchi ve
I just tried it and it doesn't on my system. (Windows XP SP2, Firefox 1.01)
You may be right, but why then were they so keen to get Hotmail off FreeBSD when they aquired it?

Or how about a port of Linux to the JVM that could then run Java .class files "natively"?

You are 100% right. If we are to truly support free speech then we are to tolerate both the MS adverts and the callers to boycott LT.
Actually yes. That would fall into the category of free speech.
Isn't the one paying the money for an ad always a biased source? Why would an unbiased source pay for an ad for anything?
