    if that stranger is a nice friendly "uncle" with a puppy

    and especially if that stranger isn't a stranger, but actually is an uncle. a large percentage of this stuff is done by relations who are trusted by the parents/children.

    8. i'm pretty sure my great-aunt qualifies (at least as an average jane), as i set her up with ubuntu for her stuff (mostly emails to people and some websurfing) and she hasn't needed help with it in 6 months (and that time was because her scanner failed physically)

    though i'd prefer XP as the base rather than 2k (they're mostly the same, but i'm more familiar with the former), this is a reasonable idea.

    take XP, take the stuff originally planned for vista (WFS, DX10, etc.) throw it in with security upgrades (like doing UAC properly) and bug fixes, then sell it for the cost of an OSX upgrade.

    sounds reasonable to me.

    i use it at work, but all the sites i use it for are internal sites that aren't accessible from outside our network, so i don't see any issue for me.

    I'm paying $40 (after taxes) for 1.5mbps down and 50kbps up. Not good.

    sheesh, minor gouging.

    the ISP i work for (Sasktel) gives 1.5m/256k for $35 CDN. you can also get 5m/640k for $45 or 10m/640k for $55.

    and that's CDN, so knock off a few percent.

    yes, but even those injuries would be a big problem over on another planet with out a hospital or something. the further G's from launching to get back here would likely cause even more problems too.

    you're paying for both, though i don't see what your issue is with 1. you're paying for being able to download at no cost and share with others.

    depends on what morals and what laws you are referring to. it is likely each would violate morals and laws, but they would be different ones.

    i'm pretty sure that almost EVERYONE knows that corn ethanol is a bad idea. it is horribly inefficient compared to other sources like sugar cane/beets or cellulose for ethanol or other sources, like this one, for bio-diesel.

    the 2wire DSL gateway (the 2700-HG) requires something similar. you need to register the thing with the circuit number (phone or dry line number) and the thing's serial number before you can access the internet.

    the reg thing is handled through a web interface (enter account number, password, phone number, serial number (auto-entered) and any previous serial number (if you're replacing a failed one)). nothing client side to fool with and it works on every web browser you can toss at it. even Lynx! when you try to goto any site, it pops you the login prompt to reg it.

    though i have yet to have someone manage to reg the damn thing without having to call into tech support where i work. most people can't remember their password or goof up the phone number (it has to be entered in a slightly odd format)

    well, according to the EXIF on the pics, they images in question were shot with a camera like this one, i don't really think it counts as "disposable", except maybe to Gates or someone else with an unreasonable amount of money.

    then again, the EXIF data can be faked if one was so inclined.

    how would this backfire if the book is going to sell millions anyway?

    i highly doubt that someone will just download this and not bother with the book.

    there may not be any value added with a movie or a game (there might even be negative value added with DRM or copy protection), but a book is substantially better than these pictures.

    actually, i wouldn't be entirely surprised if this is intentional. take pics, deliberately making most of them (all the really interesting/important parts) illegible, put it on every torrent site from here to Des Moines, and build a little(?) more hype for the big release at midnight on the 21st.
