But don't you think we should have a president instead of a prime minister, Should we get rid of those fake titles and everything.

[nitpick] how is the title of "Prime Minister" anymore fake than the title of "President"?[/nitpick]

yes, senate can overrule a law, but that hasn't been done in over 20 years. they may in theory have the power, but in actuality, it's political suicide to try to do so (as the senate is appointed rather than elected). if the government tried to defeat a bill in the senate after it passed the house of commons, it would be like invoking section 33 of the charter of rights and freedoms (the so-called "not-withstanding clause", which allows the government to temporarily overrule some of the rights granted by the charter.). they would be quickly removed from power in the next election.

another good reason to keep the G-G is, it would be A LOT of hassle to eliminate the position. it would require amendments to the constitution, a process that is (and was intended to be) really long and cumbersome, not to mention expensive (it generally require a referendum, which are expensive due to all the work needed) i might mention that no attempt to make large changes to the constitution in Canada have succeeded (both the Meech Lake and Charlottetown accords were defeated, though there have been 10 more minor amendments, such as the one regarding the creation of the territory of Nunavut.)

you know, this debate came up last week in my law class. the governor-general does more than just standing there looking nice. they act as the official head of state. that means when some foreign important guy comes along, she/he is the one who greets them, leaving the Prime Minister free to be (hopefully) doing something more important.

as for the "costly monarch visits" they're relatively rare. i don't believe that the queen came over when Paul Martin became Prime Minister. that's typically done by the G-G. Royal assent (the final bit in making a bill into a law) is also usually handled by the G-G, with the queen coming over only for really important laws (like the constitution act of 1982, for an example)

as for the senate, i agree. it's fairly much pointless, as it has very little power in this age (as it should, as it's appointed by the PM, rather than elected like the house of commons) and has just as little ceremonial value. i don't think that a bill has failed in the senate for over 20 years.

Look at it this way. With $20, you could give a family a flock of chicks that could lay hundreds of eggs a year, providing them with additional protein and a source of trade income. For another $30, you can get two packs of Micropur tablets, which will treat 30 liters of water each. The tablets last for 3 years, so they can be saved for when it isn't possible to boil water. Another $30 could go to seed, rice, or lentils to give the family a little reserve. Then, spend the final $20 on whatever texts the kids need for their elementary school. $100 goes a lot farther when you're not spending it on computers.

on a lot of cheapie PSUs, they report how much power they put out when the thing is running at 25 degrees. it's NEVER that cool inside those things, unless you're working in about 10 degree tempatures. realistic is around 35-40 degrees, and you're getting about 30-40% less power than they say.

and another thing, the wattage is coming to mean less and less. what matters is how many of those watts are on the 12v rails. most of the main draw is on the 12v. high-end video cards, processer, mobo power and expantion cards. good power supplies have more than one 12v rail, with some i've seen having 3 (IIRC, FCC regulations limit the power on one rail to 24 amps)

in general, one of the best ways to weed out a lousy PSUs is still weight. you got two 300 watt PSUs, compair weight. the heavier one is usually better. bigger capasitors and bigger heatsinks (and bigger is better, regardless of any old adages about size and its relitive importance), and additonal power cleaning circits, means more weight.

and modular PSUs are not all they're cracked up to be. the connecters give a big current loss (same as roughly 2 feet of wire) and thats under IDEAL conditions. it gets worse over time. it could be working fine one day a few years from now, then stabilitiy goes out the window and you can't figure out what the problem is.

the US goverment as a general rule is made up of old men. this is a problem in this case. we need some "naive" people in the goverment. we shouldn't need to "get used to it because this is how it is", but by the time anyone gets into goverment, those ideals have been stomped out already. how many of the polititions plays the games they're regulating, hm? i could likely count them on one hand, if there are any. this is not an informed decision. this is the decision of people whining at the goverment in what i would say is less than a majority of the population.
