Not really. All of MP3 exists because it is legal in America to import digital media from Russia just as it is legal in Russia to export digital media to America. The only catch is they have to abide by Russian laws, which they do. When I say it is legal, I don't mean that it hasn't been contested. Still, as of right now the US government has not been able to get around this loophole in American law, otherwise allofmp3.com would not be online at this moment.

So until it is made illegal by Americans, allofmp3.com it is legal for Americans to use. Carry on buying your two dollar albums without regard to friggin RIAA. They'll get their day in court with the Ruskies soon enough.

Legal, yes. Ehtical? That's up to you to decide.

What constitutes a "bad choice" here? For me, I Tunes has provided proof of a very real fact. The consumer (the general public) doesn't care about differences in quality that they can't blatantly perceive. When MP3's first came around they weren't nearly as popular, partly because they hadn't had time to saturate the market, but a greater part of the reason was that the loss of quality was obvious. My mother would listen to an MP3 of something that I encoded for her and tell me it sounded bad.... That's Obvious. Jump ahead a few years to now and that quality loss is still there but with better encoding technology around, you really have to be looking for it to even find it.

Sure AAC, AIFF, WAV, OGG and other lossless formats are proven to be better quality in that they are lossless but are they still "better" if you're worried about the space they take up on your hard drive? Are they better if you want to back up a handful of albums to one CD instead of a DVD or hard drive? Are they still better if the time that it takes to download the file is a factor in whether or not you purchase it?

The answer is obviously subjective. So again, tell me what makes I tune a "bad choice" for anyone who is paying for just that....the convenience of MP3's.

Maybe but quite a few of those titles are very popular....at least enough to have gold or platinum selling CDs. For instance, Amerie's "Touch" did well in R&B and pop markets and Mary Mary are big on contemporary christian charts. Plus there are CDs by Celine Dion, Ray Charles and Louis Armstrong that won't sell insane ammounts but those artists have large fanbases that will buy just because a new item was released. The Coral are fairly popular as well. It'd be interesting to know if Sony promoted these items differently (if at all) knowing they were defective. If that hurt sales then the true crime is against the artists who still have production costs to recoup.

I agree. If they re-programmed the Sims to actually speak real languages, it'd be a great basic learning tool. I took Japanese in highschool and I credit alot of my basic knowledge of the language from watching way too many hours of stuff like Ranma 1/2, Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Ninja Scroll ect...

Obviously watching TV or playing video games will never replace actually speaking-to-learn, but any kind of assisted learning can't be bad. I know if I taught English in Japan, like I plan too, I'd love to have something like an english speaking Sims to help entertain and teach kids.

5 Million years from now, if life comes to this planet and discovers life existed here before them, I think it'd make quite a bit of difference to them.

Point, but the fact remains....after all the years of books being butchered by Hollywood, I can't beleive she didn't have any clue what-so-ever that this could happen. If she didn't, she should have had the foresight to negotiate some kind of "final-say" clause. It's her intellectual property, it's up to her (and her alone) to aultimately protect it.

I think Urs is doing a bit of damage control here to protect her integrity. Like many of you've stated, there's no reson why she wouldn't have known any of this was going down. She knew when she signed over the rights and became a "consultant" with no 'final say' clause, that --- worse case scenario -- they could have taken Earthsea and done whatever they wanted with it and still called it Earthsea. When she signed on the dotted line and cashed the check she basically said "do what you will".

The problem here is that the producers did over step the boundries by "putting words in her mouth" in lieu of her silence. I think that pissed her off, and in order to save face ([1] for letting Holywood change the races of most of her characters and [2] being disappointed in the overall final product) she is now crying 'foul'.

Basically, she wasn't happy, but when they pissed her off for the last time she decides to play the victim. In my opinion, she may actually have felt this way all along, but obviously bit her tounge until the hate mail started pouring in. She's certainly not winning any points with me for not having the foresigt to anticipate such a disaster or (if she did know) for not doing anything to prevent it from the 'get-go'.
