  1. Re:Distributed Computing on TeraGrid v. Distributed Computing · · Score: 5, Insightful
Mathematics and science are neither arbitrary inventions nor entirely self-evident discoveries. They are our attempts to understand and categorize the universe in the most objective manner possible. I would even argue that language is a much more abstract type of categorization. Despite mutually unintelligible differences in languages, all languages are used to describe the same reality.

What I'm trying to say is that the semantics of how we describe the universe may be arbitrary, but the universe is objectively describable.

Are you going to tell me that I'm lying about having a weak constitution for violence (i.e. being a wimp)? Then again, if I really did want to kill somebody, I doubt a videogame would be adequate catharsis.

f we only tried to optimize our economy for job creation, we could just have people crush rocks or copy books by hand, like people used to. But that's just not a very efficient way of using our human resources, so we aren't doing it.

Not only is it less efficient, but there would be fewer jobs. I mean, the computer killed tons of jobs, but the increases in productivity it allows has created many more jobs (with IT being only a small portion of it).

Actually in Japan, Shogi is much more popular than Go, but many of the Go players consider themselves more cerebral (just like with chess). Shogi really is a violent game compared to western chess, though I rather enjoy it; pieces that are captured can return to the board under enemy possession, and draws are unheard of (in the very rare event of a draw, they replay immediately).

Instead the technician would decide based on the game and the computer's current evaluation of the position. I don't know if this is a computer shortcoming or was just part of the match rules, though.
