The reason, is because Microsoft can not possibly test for all combinations of hardware, software, and virus/malware infected computers.
That's the reason Apple has things so much easier. They control the hardware, so there is much less hardware / driver compatibility issues. Windows on the other hand has to support the thousands of PC manufacturers, 3rd party drivers that are buggy and run in kernel mode. Not to mention an enormously larger base of 3rd party software.
And they suck at software design, but hey, there are some legitimate reasons:)
The point is, a lot of the so called "bugs" would be better classified as incompatibility problems that went untested, IMO.
It's not a typo; you just didn't finish the story.
Matthew 1:18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
Why not tweak Linux to support Windows drivers? This may be an idiotic question, but it seems that it might be technically feasible for Linux to support the same driver model that Windows uses. They are both x86 code... I'm sure it's more complex then that though...
I recently interviewed with this team, but did not sign any NDA's. The hiring managers were vague about the project, but intentionally gave me enough information to put together what they are doing.
The team has been around for over a year, and is part of the Windows group. They will be offering some sort of subscription ($) based security service. I'm sure this acquisition and the acquisition of the anti-spyware technology are not unrelated.
The team was placed in the Windows group in order to improve communication and turn around time with the developers. Hopefully this will mean faster resolutions and hotfixes to security issues.
Also, there is apparently some client code that provides a "heartbeat" back to the Microsoft servers.
I hope none of this information is sensitive... if it was I assume they would have had me sign the NDA.
It is not logical to compare MSN Search v1 with Google's very mature search engine. Microsoft designed this from the ground up, and this is day one of the release.
I doubt Google's results were so relevant on day one.
The comments make reference to the fact that there is no central organization on the hook for security in Linux. Software stability is a seperate issue, and is not mentioned as you imply.
There are significant advantages to having a corporate entity be responsible for resolving security issues. Since they're sales are on the line, they should be highly motivated to fix them.
Corporations also provide a target for lawsuits that might arise in order to recover damages that occur due to a security flaw.
The real revolution will come when it is possible to multicast these type of streams. Today, if 1,000 people tune it, 1,000 copies of the audio data must be transmitted. With multicasting, almost anyone can run their own radio or TV station without having to pay for enormous amounts of bandwidth.
Multicasting isn't possible today because not all routers are configured for it, even though IPv4 supports it.
I've assumed for a while that when the Internet migrates to IPv6, multicasting will be a goal of that migration. Can anyone tell me if this is true?
There's a difference between linking to something and embedding the entire copyrighted work itself.
If Google ever implements a video or audio search, I guarantee you that laws would require them to limit the embeddeding to a sample clip of the work only. Embedding an image includes the entirety of the original work, albeit with some... um... detail loss.
The Blue Screen of death will now appear in gorgeous 64-bit color. Which is still ummm, blue, actually.

In an Open Source world, would we ever see these kinds of lawsuits? Is there afterall some use for these large companies with big $$$ ?
There are at least two ways that the decreased percentage of women in the industry could be caused by:
1. There is in fact an exodus of women from the industry, as the article implies.
2. More men are joining the industry than women.
I do not really have an opinion about the article; however I disagree with its reasoning.

Let's buy one for Iran so they have no more excuses. (I don't pretend to fully understand the issues, however...)

I'm sorry Dave, I'm afraid I can't do that.

In other news, 18% of adult web searchers are idiots.

If they would just make the chips 3D instead of 2D, the size would decrease by a whole dimension! Mwahaha!

I wonder what will become of http://www.shoutcast.com/? Any other good internet radio directories out there?
Works fine for me... just search for "Google Server Error" and click "I'm Feeling Lucky" =)
