No matter how hard you try linux will never grow to be the primary OS in homes. However buisness are different. So I think what we should strive for is better cross platform computability. This will allow those who want to run Linux with its better security, better multi userability, better server like features, better programmability, etc use it and give other who want to try it more choice. Wine is a step in the right direction. Another step in the right direction would be for Microsoft to drop there server lines and give the real server OSes some breathing room

Seems interesting. Maybe im just two lazy to tunnel sound and XWindows though ssh. But I think an integrated system would have its advantages. Can you honestly tell me that you would be fully OK with now sound at all in a GUI enviroment
Exactly. I know most users couldn't give two pennies about the crazy configurability of Linux. Heck most people i know don't even use bookmarks, they resort to scrolling through the recently visited sites in the address bar.
What would be the point of introducing these types to Linux. None I guess, other then cheaper software. I would more be for us UNIX/Linux guys/gals who don't want to use Windows at all, even thought everyone we work with does.
You underestimate Joe Sixpack, he could have used Windows for years and been very used to a consistent interface as is the case with 75% of all people who use Windows.
I helps identify the OS and provide better insurance to the users of compatibility. If you call it Fedora or Ubuntu you create a distinction between the two. Most average users would attribute such a distinction to mean complete system incompatibility. The real problem you run it to is people who know(or think they know) to much, but understand very little.
The problem with the Windows entrenchment is that people have adopted the mentality that Windows is a integral part of the computer.
Another thing is that there is now clear definition of what "Linux" is. We can all identify a Windows box in a heart beat because they all look the same. On the other hand one machine with a Linux distro may look/feel completely different then another. That hinders adoption because you cant say "Ok in Linux to change setting A, click Start->Control Panel->widget. You cant guarantee that the users desktop is the same as yours. For us advanced user this isn't much of a problem because worse case scenario its down to editing config files, but for Joe User its a pain in the butt. An interesting measure of success for usability would be the ability to remove any terminal emulators from the default install, with no issues.
So i think 2 things need to be done to increase usability
* Create a distro that completely abstracts the system configuration and provides a consistant interface. Heck call it Linux so people will finally have one OS they can call Linux and be sure that my Linux is the same as your Linux.
* Make (real)Linux or said distro completely Windows compatible, hey if can convince someone that all there apps will run on a OS cheaper then Windows, you can bother them with all the cool Linux features latter
Has there been any recent efforts to add at least a sound extension to X Windows. It seems a logical next step. Keyboard Video Mouse Sound
Think about it. If a Window manager can control mouse clicks/selections on a window, wouldn't it be cool to control the sound coming from that window/app like Vista can.
I know they have things like ESD and nasd and the like, which are network transparent like X, but they don't have nearly the user base X does.
SCP is OK for one or two files, but isn't there something better for moving large files in a secure way.
This is coming from a person who gets made at people for using FTP (or worse email) on there student accounts for file transfer when its possible to use SMB ( and I think even NFS) and mount them directly.
Up here in New England whenever people ask me why I wasted my vote, voting for Paul in the NH Primary, I ask them why they wasted there time supporting the Pats when they lost the Superbowl. So far I haven't been killed, yet
CD. That open source stuff is UNIX for the peasants, and it will never be used in REAL workstations, why RISC it when you have quality software developed for the superior race by the superior race.
time to whip out my old SPARCstation and maybe my SGI
anyone have a copy of IRIX i could borrow.
I though the whole concept of workstations being a separate thing from high end PC went out when you could have 8 cores, RAID, and gig ethernet on the family PC in the Living room.
Actually I am looking for some hardware XServers if anyone has one of those.
Am I the only one who see something wrong with the Apple Stores being called a community center. I applaud Apple to there approach to make retail more friendly, but doesn't calling a store a community center just scream consumerism. I mean seriously the store is there with the intent to make Apple money, and give them an image which in turn makes them more money. Isn't a community center supposed to be run by the community that uses it, like a park, school, civic lodge (Elks, Rotary, etc), or public library? Is hanging out at the Apple Store just the more sophisticated "adult" alternative to hanging out at the mall?
I'm seeing alot of people throughing around high prices for TVs. First of all poor people can have TVs too, they may be 10 year old TVs but TVs none the less, TV sets are so commonplace there more or less free, if your not looking for anything fancy. Besides if all those media companies want there customers to keep watching why don't they just send them free converter boxes.
He was using a rouge program, while I use Firefox, I have never hered of a program called "foxfire.exe" (sic). Obviously this student should be punished for promoting animal cruelty as well.
Yes there is 10Gig over copper. However The current standard 10GBaseCX is only over short distances, they are working on using UTP but its Cat7 UTP so it doesn't work with current cable.
WiFi isn't Ethernet. The have different frame formats. After all its the frame format that makes Ethernet Ethernet. Some people just call it Ethernet because they are the two predominate LAN standards for Layer 1 and 2.
Kids in high school/middle school can not be trusted with the technology that is given to them. At my high school the "computer club" was nothing more then a bunch of kids playing computer games on the Java Programming labs computers. It made it difficult to actually do some work after school with them playing games. Of course what do expect from kids who think testing and designing video games will make them rich.

You know with all this talk of government invading our lives, I wonder why suicide rates here in New Hampshire aren't higher.

Thats not just the cost of new license. It is the cost of the fiasco as a whole. Including paying everyone the overtime to fix the glitch.

No, a tiny rip in a cable and you replace the cable.

Maybe all that downloading really cut into there record sales and made them loss all that money...I propose a government bail out
