"The US is pretty much built on its public school system." That may be so, but it's arguable as to how well it's built. "It gives everyone an oppertunity to make something of themselves." That's debatable at best. "It certainly isn't the best, but it is there, it's free and it's required." I agree with all of this except the free part. Tax dollars pay for the public schools and if you spend or earn money, you pay taxes. "Anyone who argues to take that away is more scary to me than almost anyone in either major party." I read the page you linked to. They're not arguing to take education away from the populace, they're arguing that the current system is failing and it can be improved or replaced with a better paradigm. If you get a chance, read the following: http://www.thememoryhole.org/edu/school-mission.ht m I'm not making any claims to the accuracy of the linked page, but as someone who has grown up in Alabama, where the various laws and institutions were designed to keep the majority from improving their lot in life, the argument is not as unsound as I would like to believe.

As I'm not sure what is meant by BND, FE, and HE, I can't really comment on your situation. I faced a similar climate, except most of the entry-level jobs I saw when I graduated (last year), wanted a bachelor's degree AND 2 years experience.

However, my comment was in regard to the statement "It always amazes me when people, without formal education, can accomplish so much." I never stated that you don't need an FE or HE. I only stated that "I've always held the opinion that passion and determination are two of the primary ingredients of success and/or accomplishment." Notice I said TWO of the PRIMARY ingredients, not all that you need. I should also point out that spending 5 years in college could be interpreted as indicating passion and determination in an individual.

"If I'm a company that makes Foo Bar, and if I say that I'd asked this marketing company to market Foo for me, and they broke the law, what can the judge do?"

This would be dependent on the judicial system, but it could be that it is the responsibility of your company to acquire some knowledge of who you are entering a business agreement with.

If the marketing company had a history of illegal and/or unethical conduct that could be shown in court to be relatively easy to uncover, and the conduct is related to the nature of your business agreement then you could considered culpable.

"If I hire a man to sell my product and he goes and rapes a girl (or a guy, depending upon his preference), I cannot be held responsible."

This could also depend on the situation. Off the top of my head example: You hired a guy as a door-to-door salesman for women's products. He rapes a women on his sales route. During the investigation it is discovered that he had prior convictions for rape that would have appeared during a routine background investigation. From this prosecutor determines that you're company either:

didn't do a background investigation -> low chance of being held culpable but still possible in a jury trial

    or

did a background investigation but hired the guy for some reason -> higher chance of being held culpable even more likely in a jury trial

Also, in some countries, civil cases don't have the same requirements with regards to evidence as criminal courts.

First, given that substantially less than half of the US population actually cast a vote in that election, the statement above is not a reasonable inference from the stats on the provided source.

Second, even if the statement was changed from "most citizens" to "most voters", it would still be a pointless statement. Why? Because the difference in votes between Gore and Bush was sufficiently small that the statement would apply regardless of who occupied the Oval Office.
