Most people simply don't care about their computers enough to take precautionary measures to protect them. 4. I received value from other open source apps, and I want to return back to the community. That isn't philanthropic? An action doesn't have to save the world or even a life in order to be philanthropic. The first sentence of the Wikipedia article on Philanthropy says it all:

Philanthropy is the act of donating money, goods, time, or effort to support a charitable cause, usually over an extended period of time and in regard to a defined objective. I guess, in order to understand that definition, you need to understand what a "charitable cause" is. In this case, developing free software and donating it to the community is charitable on two fronts:
    • Advancement of education
    • Advancement of software for the purpose of benefiting the global community of software developers and users
Sure, much free software is written with selfish, personal goals in mind, but the net effect is all the same. If the software is free, then people can learn by studying the source code. While commercially-distributed free software is still beneficial to the community because of the freedoms that accompany the software, donation of this free software highlights an immediate intention of giving to the community. (I could develop free software and decide to not distribute source code gratis unless it is with the program that I sell to you.)

If I'm not depriving you of anything, it is not remotely stealing. Not even sketchy RIAA math of depriving potential sales being 'stealing', as frankly if you wanted to use your internet connection while someone else was connected through it, you'd hardly notice.

If you want to get technical, you're depriving the ISP of a potential sale. Instead of paying for your own connection, you use someone else's. Now, instead of getting paid for two connections (yours and your neighbor's), the ISP is only getting paid for one (your neighbor's).

For the record, I, too, run an open wireless network. I never said I cared about depriving my greedy ISP of a sale.

What do you suggest an American could do that wouldn't land her/him in Guantanamo Bay? There's only so much an American citizen can do to dismantle the Orwellian aspects of the government and still remain within the confines of the law.

I don't obey the laws because I'm a coward. I obey the law because I have a family and I don't want to be taken away from them by people who think they have the right to do so. There's a fine line between the labels of "patriot" and "terrorist" in this country. Sometimes, there is no line. I don't want my son to grow up having a "terrorist dad". On top of that, I can't provide for my family if I'm put away. An American who did something like this to a top US government official would disappear, fast.
