I used to race BMX bikes. There were all the trash brands know today as for example GT. Frames broke like they were made out of paper.
Then there was Revcore (just to mention one), who created frames, you only replaced when you really got tired of it. In other words, they were impossible to destroy.
Guess what brand survived? GT.
I am also upset that I buy expensive cameras, displays, computers, car parts, and they break from mild to normal usage, but that's how that crap economy of ours work.:(
yes, I ran mp3 on crappy things and they never pause, except my pocketpc, but that is a sd card issue (only card i have that is not sandisk and is the biggest crap on earth)...
i remember having an OOOOOLD 2x sony drive in an old linux pc (i think a 133 penti or even 486) that was my home router (dialup on demand:) ) and that thing played mp3 flawlessly without the mentioned stops....
I did not know the ipod was that powerful though:) maybe I should look into what i could use it for... i would give an informative mod, but don't have points:)
hmm tey look nice, the Sandisk brand is also to my liking, i never mentioned to destroy a memory card yet and i try veeeery hard:) all the time....
well at this time I live with my IPOD if i already have it, but my next by will be something with actual buttons, that you can operate while running or when the thing is in your pocket (unlike that thing's space-age disc).
"The reason iPods use a DB to track music is that they can load the entire DB in RAM at once and don't have those horrible gaps most MP3 players do while reading and caching new ID3 tags after you add files."
Hmm, and the device cannot create the same db when it sees a new file in it's playlist?
makes a checksum of the directory entries, and then goes thru all files, and checks if it is in the db, if not, then run a id3 tag extraction....
I mean that would take like a few seconds, and i would live it with it better than ituneshelper.exe eating up 10 megs constatnly from my ram for whaaaat???????
The basic idea of itunes is just flawed (from my perpective at least)..
Most players, even my stupid Panasonic car radio can read-in an MP3 list on the fly, and then play it, so why not that super-intelligent-wonderful device?
As on any normal MP3 player I have seen, you could just drop the files onto the device, and then it would create a playlist from it....
That way you could use any system, not just that retarded Itunes. That way you could use m3u files as well.
But wait: this way you would not need a windows or a mac running that bloated crap, that is nothing but a "buy more from itunes" adware pile.
And here is what really bothers me: you cannot use iTunes store from where i live, and now they even stopped selling prepaid cards at the apple stores. Still I have to download a new version of their crap almost every 3 weeks, with bigger and bigger file sizes, while i could just drop files on an USB drive's filesystem, and then press play...
I think I am one of the very few people who is sick of his ipod in every single sense, except it's physical strength (i use it at the gym every day and get it wet, and hit it with weights and run with it... then usually steam it for a few hours in my gym-bag's front with my wet heartrate monitor) Other than that: sound:ok i guess, earphones:garbage, interface awkward, functions:bloat, control:complicated (always those menus with the idiotic scrolling)......
Oh if that little function existed, you could use it with linux just fine, as far as usb drives are enabled... you just connect it and an scsi device(on most systems) show up, you just have to mount it....
mounting something too complicated? I guess do not use linux, that is my advice.....
hmm qtopia -> xterm/qterm/rxvt/whatever-your-favourite-term-is then max it up and run pine and the geek stuff:)
and then when you want to make a call or manage PIM, you do not have to type grep "birthday" ~/calendar-file | grep `date`... or whatever kinky stuff you like to geek around when finding todays birthdays in console mode:) -> just click calendar-> today and see all bdays registered:)
just an idea:) I would also like to monkey around in a term on these, but a term only phone ? come on !
uh-oh i want a monochrome version of these though:) or 16-grayscale, to save battery, and to be able to turn wifi/bt/phone reception off, i spend a lot of time in no-connect-zones (diving boat? mountain top? etcetc..)
What bothers me a lot more is that all the "natural" line of MS keyboards have their phup/dn, end/home/del ins block completely messed up. Took a month to get used to it after 15+ years of AT kb usage, and now I sit in front of a normal keyboard and feel like an idiot..
What is shame about the caps, is that windows does not allow an easy solution to convert the button to something useful
not that an extra ctrl left is that useful, but at least it does not bother me:) anyway Synergy (that connects my 2 machines win/lin with 4 monitors) together keeps to mess with CTRL and Caps settings, so it is good to have a Caps sometimes at least on the other kbd
I do not want to disappoint you, but in german it is Ungarn, in spanish it is Ungria, in magyar itis Magyarorszag,
and Hungary has to do with the word HUN, who were the ancient hungarians moving into that area originally (a lot larger area then now, as 70%+ was gone after WWI and WW2)
And the word is sarcasm is very well known to hungarians, their humour is very sarcastic, if no morbid at times...
I have no no clue about Java but I am the person who enjoy such things as ?writing a parser? or ?using one?.
I was referring to the fact, that badly formatted XML tends to cause problems with a lot of built-in parsers. You actually have to be very forgiving if you want to process xml written by negligent developers.
I actually have a project, processing 38k+ feeds a day, and you would be surprised how badly formatted some are. We are talking RSS here, and from missing tags, to missing headers, to missing mime types - everything.
I tried several JS, PHP, C++ and PERL parsers, until i found one that is forgiving enough. I went to the depths, that the parser would try to correct feeds, that are known to be badly formatted.
That's all I meant...
And I know that browsers won't really fall on their asses (because they do not have one) so I guess I am not that clueless.
Ohh and I (and appearently other) find it funny, that a technical article about XML would have such an error (html being XML sort-of), as having a tag inside the title tag, which is meant to be clear text, and browsers do not parse it - format it right....
BTW I am reading now that JSF spec on Sun, seems interesting:)
The casino, bookie guys do not need rules and regulations. Feel free to take their data (usually cystomer lists), it is full of spikes/seeds (phone numbers, email and land addresses that belong to the owners), so when the data is sold and used (callcenter, email spam/etc) the mails get back to you.
Then the death squad goes after the techs and asks some unconfortable questions, talk about broken kneecaps and burning family houses.
Heck, you can even seed different addresses for each admin (if one is doing the mailing, the other only sees the SQL tables)...
If you think it is science fiction, or fear mongering, come and work for a casino in any Central AM country...
I personally left a place because I was scared - higher staff was regularly followed, I heard bad things about the company, and we had more and more armed people at the entrance. I also heard (from my colleage), that our previous sysadmin was chased down the street by the neighbour casino owner with a gun in the hand, shouting "I kill you bastard" over some customer list that the guy "administrated".
Want 1st person experience: how about police calling me, that a gentlemen wants to talk about one of our employees, who supposedly stole data from a caribbean country's casino. The guy looked like a headhunter/killer to me, who kept calling me for 2 weeks, every day, offering more and more for the person's address or any tip where the person could be met (killed??). And that was back in Europe, and the guy came from the islands.... so he was pretty determined.
Oh well you can make some other measures, like at one place, they sniffed all IM traffic, read all emails, and made it forbidden to take anything into the office. First usb drives, cds floppies. Later cell phones, walkmans, ipods. ANYTHING. They were as well beleived to go thru the lockers.
Of course I cannot (and do not want to name people, places, etc). All I can say, is that I am done with that industry, even though they pay a lot better than others in southern countries.
coming from an other world, where 2400 baud modems were a luxory, I always get bothered while dealing with XML, and seeing that in most transactions, over 50% is the tags.
Then people deal with the magic SOAP transactions, where they send 90%+ tags, and 2-3 short strings as the actual data...
On the other hand, implement a payment processing using a. SOAP requests b. some proprietary crap
than you will thank God for XML.....
I also have to mention that while XML seems like a bandwidth hog, there is little to complain about, when people are stuffig 1M+ size images on flash loaded sites, where they stream you mp3 by default on onLoad(), and force you to DL a new flash version for no reason whatsoever (flash 8 player is important for those menus, yeah)...
I also agree, that framing data in xml is a waste many times, but that is also the problem of naming... In fact using tags like ThisIsTheFirstNameOfTheCustomeOfTheTransaction you can use "Name" or a1, then agree with the client later on )or before) what a1 is. Especially when that file has that 1000 times, that would save 2x100x bytesize("ThisIsTheFirstNameOfTheCustomeOfTheTrans action") during the transaction...
but hey, who cares when the hosting company gives 1000gig UL xfer a month and a dual proc with 2gig ram for $99-120... I personally do, but most people don't
1. allow.xxx and anything there (except torture, kiddy, and other illegally sick stuff) 2. ban any porn content on any other domain
results: you can just ban the whole.xxx domain, and whoever hosts porn outside of it you can just fine, arrest and execute...
but instead: they did not allow.XXX, and now they will go after people in a sneakier way.
