    And even when the towers were still smoldering, it was said that Iraq should be attacked.

    Nobody minded going into Afghanistan. There were and are several countries that helped with that. There was NO reason to go into Iraq, except greed.

    Even if there would have been twitter, the war would have happened, because there was such a nice excuse. People did not DARE to speak up. Dicie Chicks

    The media has learned its lesson. The government has learned its lesson. So now we see nice stories of soldiers coming home. Now we have embedded media. Now we have Guantanamo Bay.

    The hippies of 69 don't do anything about it, because they are the man now.

    So no, it was not a popular idea at the time. It is just that you have no media left in the world telling you what is happening in the world. People who were against it were looked upon as traitors.

    It is sad times when people are more worried about the legal thread and ruining their lives and not about the technical implications.

    As we can see here, the most important hacking tool is social engineering. He did not get the name by technical skills. Not by running telnet and traceroute, but by following a tip.

    Could have been the DDOS person himself for all we know.

    So I would not say he was 'hot on the tail'.

    I couldn't use Linux because I hated Gnome and KDE was a little bit unstable.

    I like neither. I just use XFCE. I came from first Enlightenment and then Windowmaker.
    Another option is LXDE and there are even more options.

    If your distro does not support it, just change to a distro that does.

    Look at politics. Having only 2 things to select from is not competition. It is an illusion of competition.

    When I am in a conversation and the other person suddenly hangs up, I will know that the person calling was the cause or that it was a technical issue. Ask anybody and they will tell you that they can tell the difference.

    This is the case when I am on the phone and the other person calls with a cellphone. This happens when the other person is on a landline.

    What you do not have with a cellphone that you have with a landline is, as caller the satisfaction of slamming the horn down, missing the phone in anger and needing to slam it down several more times.

    If you missed, the callee could hear the callers frustration and giggle, However if he did not miss, you would not hear all the noise and you still were sure that the person hung up on you.

    So in the past you suddenly did not hear the person anymore. Now you suddenly do not hear the person anymore. There is no difference, except maybe in the theatrical sense.

    And yes, we still use the same words for things. That is language. I am sure there are many words we use for things that we do not even know what the original meaning was. That is why ethymology exists.

    My guess is that this is about trying to be nostalgic, while there is nothing to be nostalgic about.

    In many places what they will do is have three items. One is extremely expensive. One is extremely cheap. Then they have one in the middle and that is the one they will have the highest margin on.

    Sure, some will buy the cheap one. Some will buy the expensive item. Most will buy the middle one.

    It is also easy for the sales person to 'down sell' an item. Makes him look honest. "You do not need this one, take the cheaper one. It is just as good." And that way he has a higher commission, because that was the one with the biggest margin.

    So if somebody has glasses on, they will not be allowed into MacDonalds? I hope you will be right. I am sure you won't be as all the rest will say how it does not matter.

    In several years there might be no difference between Google Glasses and normal ones, so how will you be able to tell the difference?

    It is amazing how happy people are when they give up their privacy and with that their rights on privacy. If Honecker and Stalin would be still alive, they would have the biggest hardon right now.

    No, not all geeks, just some.
    I trow out everything that I have not touched in a year. I used to keep everything, but then I realized that there is so much more space available when I just trow things out.

    Sure, I still have a bit of backup stuff, but do I really need that much cables? I just trow them out the moment I have not used them for a year.

    Yes, it has happened that I had to buy a new cable of the identical type I threw out a few months earlier. That is 5 EUR I happily spend. That 5 EUR was meaning less to me then the time I would have needed looking for it.

    Just looking at the pictures shows how his attitude has changed.
    In 2005 he thought it was cool to show (and have?) as much as possible, including all phones, his microwave and other assorted things.
    In 2013 he does not have a microwave anymore? Seriously?
    He only uses two speakers of his 5.1 system?
    And no router, hub or any other network connection anywhere? Not in either image?

    To me it seems that either his way of living has changed. e.g. eating healthier (Drop the coffee then) or he really wanted to show as little as possible where in the old picture he wanted to show as much as possible.

    When I look at myself, I am still at about the same in numbers. If I do not use something for one year, it is out. Some things just have replaced other things. e.g. the NAS has replaced the CD/VHS player.

    Indeed. When I was looking for a new car here in Europe,I looked at fuel efficiency. I did not leek at it as a real number as I knew and understood that those will be reached on very specific situations that I would never encounter.
    I used them to compare one to another. Just like I use other data to compare. Diesel or gasoline? Extended warranty or not? Build in radio or buy my own?

    They could give it any number and I would not care as I use it just to compare it from one to the other. I just hope they all cheat

    No root needed for this app, but you need it for others.

    I understand that they would not want it possible by default, but making it as hard as possible is not a good thing.

    Why can I buy my PC with any OS on it and select the admin password and have the right to mess it up, but I am not allowed to do the same thing with my phone?

    The problem is that Windows makes users believe that they can handle sys admin tasks. The fact that I need to filter out spam is an indication that this is not the case.

    They have been tailored towards 1GB USB keys. I personally use the network install without the use of media.

    1) Download linux and initrd from
    http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/12.3/repo/oss/boot/x86_64/loader/ and save them as install.linux and install.initrd
    2) Edit grub1 so the entry reads

    title SSH-Install
      root
      kernel /boot/install.linux install=http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/12.3/repo/oss hostip=192.168.1.200 netmask=255.255.255.0 gateway=192.168.1.1 nameserver=192.168.1.3 showopts
      initrd /boot/install.initrd

    Then boot from that. (Be sure to edit the IP adresses to yours).
    If you add the following to the kernel line, you can even do the install via ssh. Be aware that it will take a time till your ssh is accesible:
    textmode=1 usessh=1 sshpassword="semi-secret"

    Next start with ssh -X -o "UserKnownHostsFile /dev/null" root@[Server to install] and launch yast.
    After the reboot, login again and launch /usr/lib/YaST2/startup/YaST2.ssh for the second stage.

    Great way to install a great XFCE based distribution.

    Even before the contract ends,. you should be allowed to do whatever you want with the phone. If I sign the contract and decide I want to use my Nokia 3110. I should be allowed to do that.
    The phone that I got with the deal I should be allowed to give to my kid to play games on. I should be able to sell it.
    If I make more money on selling the phone then I did by paying you, then that pricing policy of yours is YOUR problem, not mine.

    It is not just locking. Bundled sales is the other part that is bad for people.

    Locking is interesting for the supplier, because it means that people will have to buy a new phone. With a bit of luck they will buy one of theirs.
    They do not even have to do anything t make the phone obsolete. The phone just stops working.

    This is not even about people relocating. This is about people who get a new plan. Not sure if it happens the same all over the world, but I have seen that they just offer e new phone and by accepting that new phone, they signed up for a new 2 year plan. After 18 months, they will get the next phone.

    If you accept it, what are you going to do with 18 month old phone? Sell it? You can't, because it is locked.

    What would make sense is having a law AGAINST locking. From a end user point of view there is nothing good about it.

    I agree with you, except for the small fine judges could give.
    What they should do is completely ignore it. Not even let it get to the judge.

    In Belgium I have seen letters (a few years ago) from the court not to bother them with these minimal claims and if they did, they would hold them responsible for obstruction of the law, because it would take precious time away from serious cases.
    However, they wrote, they would be willing to help if it was about people who made money from it.
    This was around the year 2000 and the letter was to the Belgian MAFIAA.

    They have a similar thing with soft drugs. If it is for personal usage, they will ignore it. They could still charge you, but they don't. That way they did not offended the French who did not want to see it being made legal.

    So no fines whatsoever and make it clear to the cops, so they don't stop you and harass you about things just because they can. In Belgium they could get reprimanded and ivestigated by Comite P.
