  1. Re:Noisy annoying environment on Why Working Remotely Needs To Make a Comeback · · Score: 1

It is nice to know that you feel like that. The question is if you really are more productive.
I am sure that it will depend on several factors.
    1) The job.
    2) The person

For some jobs contact with others is an extreme plus. To exchange ideas with others. To ask questions and give answers.
Your job will most likely be more then just writing code. If it is, then why let YOU do it in the country you live in? Why not just give it to somebody who lives in a cheaper country (could even be you AND you get a higher standard of living with it.)

Some people just do not work well at home. The quality and/or quantity of work goes down. Due to this quality control will be more expensive.
The down side then is that people will not believe this and say they do better without actual proof.
Many people will be less productive because of several reasons. e.g. they are distracted and say: well, I can do that later.

And others work so well at home, that they work MORE hours. This means you are cutting into your own free (family) time and the reason you wanted to stay home is lost.

For me personally: I AM much more effective at the office then in the quiet of my home. Yes, I have measured it over a longer period of time. Not just a week or a month.

  5. Re:No damage? on The Hacker Who Found the Secrets of the Next Xbox and PlayStation · · Score: 0

If I am able to break into your system, you have a problem with your security.

In Belgium there was a 'hacker' that hacked into a banking system by using the password 'pswrd'. As he just did trial and error, many did not want to call him a hacker.
Some people thought that it was better that it was not a real hacker. For me it was worse.

Look at it in another way:
    1) I hack your system and tell you what I have found. I might or might not have left backdoors behind.
    2) I hack your system and do NOT tell anybody. I might or might not have left backdoors behind.

I'm a man without a country and that weighs heavy on my mind. It sucks to not be able to feel proud of where I come from anymore

Where you came from is your past. Where you came from is your family. You can still be proud of that.
A country (or a nation, if you like) means nothing. It is just a political line on a map.
You can not be proud of things where you have no influence. You can be satisfied or even happy that they are there, but you can not be proud of them.

When people ask me what my nationality is, I ask them what it would matter if I told them. I give them several options they can select from:
Belgian, Dutch, German, Italian, Argentine, European, Spanish, American, Polish, African, Indonesian, ...

The answer that they give is always that it does not matter, so why ask the question in the first place?

The problem is that most of the data is not available till it is too late. Or worse, only the data for the government part is available.
So when we see X Gazillion is spend on a dead end project, people will shudder. You will seldom hear about this from private companies.

So comparing is very hard. Also people think they have more invested in it, because it is their money, while they do not care to pay for the failed investment with a company when buying their product with a slightly higher price.

    Possible solution 1)
Hello, I am Google and I just bought everything, so there will be NO competition anymore. I will now buy all the phone and other companies, so they can not compete in 10 years time. Prices will be low as they do not have any serious business anymore
    Possible solution 2)
Hello, we are the coalition of phone companies and we bid 1USD.

The problem with the first is that you will create a monopoly.
The problem with the second is that you do not get any money. If not getting any money is not a problem, then why sell it in the first place?

Selling it has another disadvantage. It will create false scarcity and that will drive up prices. So instead of the intention of competition to drive down prices for the consumer, it will drive up prices in these cases.
