  1. Re:Pink one. on Ask Slashdot: How To Shop For a Laptop? · · Score: 1

    Moderated funny, but actually insightful.

    When people ask me, I ask them basically the following;
    1) What is your maximum budget
    2) What doe you want to do with it
    3) Where will you use your portable

    Their answer is often:
    1) Not too expensive
    2) surfing, email, looking at pictures. I do not want it to go slower over time
    3) At my desk and sitting in front of the tv

To me this means I can buy them a big screen not too fast portable and install Linux on it. And yes, how they look is important too.

One person once insisted that she wanted to run Office and PaintShop Pro. After one year I asked how often she had ran those, the answer was "Never". So she bought an overpriced computer, running an overpriced OS with overpriced anti-virus software that still slowed her PC down. And she never moved it from her desk.

Not having Free Speech is called Censorship. When people say that they want Free Speech, what they say is that they do not want Censorship.
Censorship is not limited to Governments.

Even then, if Free Speech is a good idea for the government to put it into law, it is probably a good idea to do the same a public forum.

The fact that others do it does not mean it is a good idea. The majority of people had VHS and not Betamax. The majority of people do not have free speech (China). And no, I am not surprised.

So please no censorship. Perhaps what would be possible is that there is a way that you yourself can select to have new posters modded -1. That way you can decide for yourself if you want to filter new posters out or if you want to welcome new members to the community.

I would much rather work nine hours at home than work for eight in the office with even one hour of commuting.

I am the opposite. I would rather work with people then without them.
I know I would be less productive and hating it while I would be doing it. I like to have my home and my work completely separated.

As the people are most likely volunteers, it would seem logical that people who volunteer, wanted to do it. Those will then be more likely to be indeed more productive.

So perhaps it is not so much about telecommuters being more productive, but people who are in an environment they like to work in are more productive. (DUH!)

Let them force people who do not want it to work at home and see if the same happens.

I have absolutely no problem with the commuting part of it. I even see it as relaxing. Most of the time I listen to books and I often take detours that takes me even longer to get home. Once I am home, I like being there and do non-work related stuff.

At my job every 1st workday of the month I change all my passwords. I will change them to include something of both year and month. I must have 8 (some systems can not deal with longer ones) so I add a semi random word with at least one capital in it. e.g. my password for this month could be:
    1205Tinc

Using this system for many years now.

Obviously this does not take into account the passwords that I am unable to change.

Also it does not take into account the many usernames I have been given.

    I use 5 different password
    1) Home system
    2) Remote systems. Changed once a year. This includes email, sFTP and ssh.
    3) Websites (e.g. /. ) Pretty unsecure
    4) Bank, Credit Card, ... : Secure and the same all over, but not the same as at home or remote. Change them once a year
    5) Work: Changed monthly

So I need to remember 5 passwords. I am able to do this since at least 10 years, if not more.

Remember that you can use many systems for the monthly password:
Xxxx1209, 0912Xxx, 12XX09xx, 2Octxxxx, Oct12xxxx and what not. The advantage is that it does not cause problems with the "Can not use the last 30 passwords". Also if the company IT messes up and reveals my last 30 password because they are not hashed, then all I will looses is the security to my work files for which they are responsible in the first place.

Mind you, I had once access to such files. When I told them I got a simple 'Meh!' as response. SO I started telling as many people as possible that the file existed, so I would not be held responsible if something would happen. Yes, I kept an email trail.
