Revolutions changed the names of those in power. The common man is only interested in feeding and housing his family. Only when that is a threat to that are they willing to risk anything as they will not have anything to loose.

For now the risks are too high. In general we still have a reasonable comfortable lifestyle.

These revolutions also did not happen over night. There are many years of abuse of the people before anything really happens. So give it another 25-50 years or so and then we might see a serious revolution of the people. Now? Not so much.

I agree. What I dislike about the majority of SF is that it treats each planet as a country. perhaps this is a copy of a US centric view of our own world. Perhaps it is because writers are lazy and don't want to bother with that kind of realism.

A more realistic situation would be that an other planet also has different political views spread around the planet. It will have tribes or countries with different points of view and inhabitants with different believes or at least grades of belief.

Instead it is most of the time "All of the planet are farmers" or "They all live like in the 16th century" or "all following one belief that is not Christian" and especially nice is the fact that all wear the same clothing all around the planet.

Walk around a city and you will see this is not true for humans. Even each individual will wear different clothing at different times as well, depending on what he will be doing. That is also the obvious reason they are all military. It gives a nice structure, which is much easier to handle for the story teller.

Try it with a company where people get replaced half way through or budget cuts don't allow things to happen anymore half way in a mission. "Sorry. We were ready to receive the cure for cancer from you in change of 100 tonnes of sand, but management have done a better deal to increase their profit margin, so tada and sorry that your species will be extinct in 2 weeks."

I have used metrics to show how BAD we were doing. The reason was under staffing. Management understands numbers, so if you can provide proof that your numbers are bad because of under staffing they can do something about it.

I one place they reduced the expectations. In another they increased the staffing. The latter because there were more things that needed to be done. Company that had grown and tasks that had been added.

You should however give numbers as team numbers, not as individual numbers. The team is too small for that.

Comparing it to other companies is not a good thing. What s importand is what the perception in your company is. Do you get feedback from people and if so, what is it? Do people sound frustrated if they forgot their password, because it means 4 hours before you answer a ticket?

Even those 4 hours could be a reason for showing you are understaffed and under performing. In Europe 3 people means there is almost every other week somebody on holiday. Add one person sick and you will have serious issues if the third has a flat tire.

Metrics as with statistics is a way to proove your point, so look at what YOU want to achieve and back that up with numbers. If possible with financial numbers as well. e.g. a fourth person would cost X but would gain the company Y.

Managers love that shit. It does not mean you would get that 4rth person, but if people complain, you can show them the numbers and blame management. If the right people see it, they will start pushing management and a year later it will be included in the new budget.

First you seek key users. These will be the people who should be testing your software. See that they are a good mix of people of technical knowledge and level of command, depending on who must work with it.

That key group must be already availble to you at the beginning, naming demands. This will mean actual meetings. In the beginning you will hear all the complaints about the current sftware, so you have to dilute what all want. Show mockups to them at later meetings. That way they will see that you listen to them.

Once they notice that AND they are sure it will be an improvement, they will WANT to betatest for you. Not only that, they will be your advocates who will make people also WANT to use it.

As this is a small group of people it is easy to explain them how to file bug reports. Next you do a tryout on one department where your most energetic test member is located who also. Ask (not tell) them to do the test. Still small enough to do an explanation on how bugreports should be done and what you are looking for.

Once that is done, and you are ready for the whole rollout, have a webpage set up that is easy to use. SOme simple technical questions and some fields with likes and dislikes.

Ask the test members to see that as many people have answerd and publish the result and also do something if major issues arise. Especially in the beginning. This will make more people aware that you listen and will be more willing to help with the next project.

The downside is that suddenly YOU are the one that requests meetings and have social contact.

Hell yes. If you charge me for three hours and you did not do three hours, I would complain. If I asked you to do my brake calipers and you only did half of them as the other half did not need to be changed out, and you still charged for all of them I would also complain.

Now what you can do is indeed charge per piecework. But then you must also take the losses if it doesn't take 3 hours like the book says, but 6 hours.

So the problem with TFA is that he charged something that he then did not deliver. Be it piecework, be it work hours, be it actual code. If you charge for something that you did not deliver then yes, I would complain.

Hospitals will let me wait for much longer to deal with people who actually need hospital care. They will not send you away, but explain that the next time to please not waste their time but contact a doctor first. This can also mean just calling him and explaining the situation.
He will know you and will be able to decide if coming over is a good idea or directly going to the hospital is better.
