possible that someone somewhere is really screwed by this attack, so it should be taken seriously
/I would disagree. No systems are known. It is not certain there are even people affected. So it should NOT be taken seriously. It should be looked at with interest from an academic point of view at most.
"Taking it seriously" is already emotionally charged. People take terrorist children seriously.
This is not about "No student left behind". This is not about "People must be able to get the degree". This is about setting a standard and if you get that standard, you pass and if not, you fail.
Sure it is almost impossible for people without the proper knowledge to pass. That is the whole point of it all. To see who is ready and who is not. Some will pass and some will fail.
People who are better prepared will have it a lot easier then those who are not. News at 11.
1 person talking about Emlightenment and it isn't a KDE and GNOME summit? LOL.
I am sure that there are a LOT of cool things going on, like even more bling. I am also sure that a LOT of people went from Windows to Linux, because it looked shiny and had a cool spinning with programs on it.
I however want just something that works with multiple screens (No Xinerama) and NVidea and just lace programs on the workspace I want them on.
I do not need icons on my desktop that I can't see or anything else there. I do not want to drag around my programs from one place to the other. I have multiple desktops that I can switch to with the press of a button. (No animation needed for that)
And most of that I can get with XFCE (and Devilspie)
So it sounds like an exciting place where people will be hyped about things and stuff while forgetting what the Desktop is actualy for. Showing programs. It sounds a bit like an organisation who succeeded in what they wanted to do and now just go on and on and on.
No. It is YOUR data that will be lost, not the data from the company. They can not value MY or YOUR data, regardless of how big a fine they would get.
And as an aside, why would people walk around with MY data which they will loose. If you can't even bother to protect it on your own servers, how should I believe you are able to protect it on your USB key, portable or whatever device will be there in the future.
You won't use encryption and keep data you do not need, but will harm me if obtained by third parties, and now I must stand and accept this?
If anything, I hope companies will be liable for ALL costs when loosing data. e.g. you keep my CC number and somebody else gets it? At least pay for the new card. Say 5USD per card issued. 10.000.000 CC numbers stolen? 50.000.000 deposited on those accounts at 5USD each (Should cover the problem of asking for a new card and such)
Yeah, I would thing 5USD (or 5EUR) would be a nice incentive to start looking for better security.
It would then be pretty easy for companies to indeed look at loss/profit when looking at data. Invest 100.000 now or loose 100.000.000 later?
Sure, it will take a few mistakes by companies before all tart to realize this.
My evangelism starts and ends with my telling you my beliefs, and my hope that you'll at least entertain the ideas
Why do you need to tell about it? Please don't. Religion is like a penis. It's fine to have one. It's fine to be proud of it. But please don't whip it out in public and start waving it. (No need to quote the rest)
No, it hasn't. If you lie about this, how do I know the rest is not a lie as well?
Luckily I am able to understand that there is not just two sides, so I can deny this AND can deny what they are opposed of. The enemy of a friend is not an enemy to me, he is a third person that could be enemy or friend or just another somebody I do not know enough about to form an opinion.
Well, perhaps Visa knows what I purchased in some countries, but in Belgium (and perhaps many other countries) all they see is the name of the merchant, the type of merchant and the amount. OK, also the way of payment (e.g. Internet, reading the strip or reading the chip) and that is about it.
Anything else is illegal.
The rest of the process already happens here in Belgium, just not online. There is one thing with fraud. If you send money to Western Union, and it is fraud, but should the credit card company pay for that? People send it for good reasons there as well.
So if a country has, in percentage, the most people being punished by putting them in jail, there would be no crime anymore in said country? Or does it mean that there still are not enough people in jail?
You can fight illegal things, but there will always be somebody doing something illegal. Be aware that the fighting won't harm more then the crime. (Copyright anyone?)
I see it with my own parents. A cell phone is a challenge for my dad and my mom does not even touch the thing and panics when it goes off.
I even bought her one made specially for elderly people. Just seconds after I explained her how to pick up (took about 30 minutes) I said I would be calling her. Phone rings and she asks me "What should I do now?". I say: Press the big green button and she looks at the phone and asks "Where? What? How?"
She is able to use a normal landline. Yet I was unable to explain the difference between the usage of a landline phone and a cell phone. Between the real picking up of the phone and the virtual picking up by pressing a button. And no, a slider won't work either.
What I think is happening is that young people are not afraid to make a mistake. That is the best way to learn. The older we get, the more afraid we become to make mistakes. And very old people will be scared of being called senile if they make mistakes, so better do nothing then make a mistake.
Perhaps the ability to learn becomes less over time. No idea. Could be an interesting study. Kids learn languages very fast. The older you get, the harder it is. Perhaps that is happening with all thing we need to learn.
If there are some people who do not like it, that would be normal. But if you take something like 'I am Legend' which was a great story, then alter the story so the the main character looks good, then you have a problem.
LotR? Good, because it mostly stuck to the book. Starship Troopers? Bad.
I can understand if a movie maker does not like the story. But then PLEAAAASE don't buy the rights just for the title. Make your own story that you DO like and let somebody else, who does a better job, turn the book into a movie.
It is the worst idea ever. It is already very bad that people type the URL in google and then complain that they do not get what they need. I have seen people complain that they did not get what they wanted after being asked to type a local URL.
At least now I can explain: No, go to the top where it says http://www.google.com/ delete that and type http://local.site/ (People need to hear the http:/// for some reason, even getting confused if you do not mention the www)
And now I would have to explain to press some strange key combination they have never heard of to be able to go to some site?
The reason is obvious. They know many already use google as their URL bar, but just not enough and this is a great way to force many more to use google.
Not doing any evil? That has been thrown out a LONG time ago. Probably the moment they realized they could make money with it.
I use different types of keyboard. Qwerty and Azerty are the most common ones. I also have a Happy Hacker keyboard without the nummeric keypad, while at work I do have it, so numbers are entered differently.
Sometimes I sit at a table and other times I am lying on the couch, which will alter the way I type it is different again.
The main problem I have with passwords and logins is that there are way to many of them. Many places (especially work related) will give me a login, instead of letting me select one. Also I am forced to change passwords every month, so I am changing all the passwords I am able to change. Because of this I had to dumb down my passwords, so I can actually remember what it was.
IT people say that there are ways to solve this. I think it is great that the technical solutions exists. Unfortunately not all of them are implemented. There are company wide logins and passwords at other companies, department dependent passwords and logins.
Stupid? Yes. The reason it happens is because each only looks at their OWN system and as long as the blame can be pointed to others, then the people who implement it are safe. "Hey, I asked them to change the password every month with at least 56 random letters, numbers and characters to access their email. The fact that they printed it out and attached it to their screen is THEIR fault, not mine."
The worst thing is that a computer will be better able to copy my behavior of how I type in my passwords the I can do.
I would say they are obsessed with it, but also are too lazy to do it themselves. The reason for vigilante justice is pure and simple revenge AND convict people for a crime.
The result is people voted as judges who represent those ideas and the final result is the highest percentage of people in jail in any country for crimes where in other countries they would at most write a ticket, if anything.
if you and your spouse have 3 kids and are working multiple minimum wage jobs, you're not likely going to want to cook proper home-made food every night nor could you likely afford better fast food.
And the is the problem right there. The time I spend on making food is minimal. Put some potatoes in a pot to boil them, then clean and boil some vegetables and then bake some meat makes for a good meal, takes at most 15 minutes AND will provide a nice moment of all to sit together as a family. There are many good meals that can be done even faster.
It also is way cheaper then fast food.
Sure it takes some practice and foresight. Making a list of what all the meals will be for the next week and doing your shopping according to that list.
I understand why people do it. Outsourcing is much easier, even if it is only the cooking. Downside is that you won't teach your children to eat healthy and I am not talking about being a health freak.
Also the part of eating as a family is not the same when you do it at home (do not eat in front of the TV) vs eating at e.g. McD.
What is a creepy online auction and how does it differ from a non-creepy one?
No, more like how the TSA started to fondle everybody (including terrorist and kids) and nobody did anything.
So bloggers are just like any other news outlet then?
Great, another person who sees the word "is" and understands that it must be mathematical and meaning "identical to" .
Get a clue
It would have been great if the default for search engines would have been opt-out and only if you want it to be opt-in then it would be opt-in.
Unfortunately too late for that now.
Google Maps is seen as breaking privacy by some as well.
This is not about "No student left behind". This is not about "People must be able to get the degree". This is about setting a standard and if you get that standard, you pass and if not, you fail.

Distro defaults? Then why not try the openSUSE DVD? You can install KDE or GNOME, but also XFCE and LXDE as 'default'.
No. It is YOUR data that will be lost, not the data from the company. They can not value MY or YOUR data, regardless of how big a fine they would get.

Not only the law, but the Catholic Church itself says so.
Why do you need to tell about it? Please don't.

That should scare the living hell out of people if you have enough.

I will print out a copy of the following and carry it around with me:

A long read, but well worth it.
I will probably sign it with my own blood, just to be sure.

Lets ban all the military schools. They result in death as well for many.
